Orienteering race 56:17 [3]

West Point Middle

Good navigation except for inside the control circle. I was even reading the clue descriptions, but there were a couple of them I just couldn't find even though I was standing 5 feet away. 9, 10, and 13 were all suspect in their hiddenness and clues.

Orienteering race 19:54 [3]

West Point Spring

Legs felt really heavy after the morning, so I didn't push it too hard. Have to save something for the long.

Note

Radio testing with Eddie.

We went out after the sprint with a pair of 900mhz radios with yagis. One radio at the finish area, the other at the far end of the map 1km away. Good link at the far end. One green led, ~-55db. Solid trees at the far end, and a good stand at the end of the swamp that was in the way.
We wanted to get a 5-8km clear LOS test, but the rest of my car was significantly less interested in radio testing than food acquisition.

Park-O race 17:20 [3]

Boston Common Park-O
Fun course by Giovanni, lots of confusing loops. I started the A loop with Dean on the B loop.

Orienteering race 2:32:00 [3]

Billygoat

1: Went out slow following the main train to the north, but quickly cut uphill to the trail. I think I was following Joe into the control, but had no idea exactly where we were most of the time.
2: Short leg, but was reassuring that I could actually read the cliffs.
3: Started out following the stream/mashes, but then noticed the trail 50m to the left. Left the group and had a nice trail run down the the large swamp. Picked up Magnus and followed him into the control.
4: Out to the trail, past the mash, and back into the woods to the control.
5: Choose the right fork since I like instant gratification and that 5 seemed easier than the other one. Deal with the 5-6 run latter. Planned on taking the trail to the big cliff and cutting in around the marsh, but the trail was really indistinct and I missed the junction and ran 100m north instead of heading west. Realized my mistake when I hit the marsh and looked at my compass. I had been reading the cliffs the wrong way at 5, and was a bit confused until I looked at my map again.
6: Now I had to deal with the other half of my forking choice. Turned out to be really easy though, aimed a bit left of the line and hit all three sets of obvious cliffs.
7: Ran with another group, over the cliffs, around the end of the hill and into the control.
8: Left 7 ahead of the group and ran uphill. No one followed so I stopped thinking something was wrong. Should have just kept running because the control was an easy approach along the top. The rest of the group stayed low and climbed up latter.
9: Ran east to the swamps and followed them in. Climbed up early which made the reentrant hard to see, so slowed down along the top at the last marsh to read things carefully.
10: I have no memory of this control.
11: Skip. I had decided on this on the way to 1, figuring that it saved the most distance. I was happy with the decision at the time, but later analysis shows that it didn't save much time. It did keep me with the group I was with though.
12: Ran east from 11, counting swamps, past the first trail crossing and south of the big swamp. Hit the second tral and ran north west around the last swamp for the approach. After we left the trail, everyone in the group seemed to do their own thing trying to get a bit of an advantage, and no one really read the map carefully enough. We ended up too far south, and had to go find the trail and re-attack.
13: Again I don't remember many details from this leg, I think we ran across the long swamp and north of the weird shaped one, directly along the line.
14: no idea
15: Across the swamp and hit the trail just north of the bare rock. Over the hill and down into the swamp.
16: I could see Ari ahead of me, and really wanted to catch him. I was feeling good, so just recklessly ran downhill to the trail. Met up with him and and a great trail run into 16. We were together for a few controls and it was a lot of fun being able to talk everything through with someone. Exited the trail and read the contours correctly for a perfect approach into 16. A bunch of people had problems here, but I've learned my lesson about running downhills trying to find a cliff without paying attention at the end of courses at Bear Hill.
17: Ran downhill and hit the big trail into the parking lot. This meant we cam into the food stop from the back. It was a rather useless food stop, but I finally had a bar here.
18: Should have skipped this one. Lots of climb back up the hill. Took the switchbacking one, and exited just below some green.
19: Downhill over the indistinct trail to the real trail. Was going to run high and drop into the control, but then as soon as it started to go uphill we reread the map and decided to take the lower trail and come off the corner. Should have gone halfway in between along the ledge.
20: Contoured around through the woods. Bad choice, trail was much faster. Lots of thick saplings through the green.
21: Cruel to have us run past the finish
22: Ari left me at this point. He still had more running speed in him, and didn't need me for navigation any more. I was down to just a single speed.
23-24-25-26: went left around the lake. Easy navigation, but just wanted to be done.

Overall I think it was my best billygoat ever, probably my fastest? I think my happiness thought the race was mostly from being confident in the navigation, on an awesome map. I didn't make any 30min errors, which is what normally kills me physically and emotionally. I also was smart and started slow, which allowed me to catch up and pass groups throughout the race. Past years I've gone out super fast and then dropped back the whole way.
