Running - off road (Westbury Harriers) 46:33 [3] 9.53 km (4:53 / km) +130m 4:34 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 11 y

Westbury Group 2 led by Alex.

Only just made it because of the worst traffic I've ever encountered in x years of living in Bristol - 50 minutes to get to Blaise from home, so got there just before they started. But at least I made it, and others weren't so lucky.

Standard Penpole. Struggling right from the start and falling back a bit around the bottom. Very glad that we finished shorter than normal - seem to have lost a lot of pace so tomorrow might be very slow too.

Running - off road warm up/down 8:00 [3] 1.0 km (8:00 / km) +30m 6:57 / km

Jog to start and a bit whilst waiting.

Orienteering race (British Middles) 55:44 [3] 7.25 km (7:41 / km) +155m 6:57 / km
slept:5.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

British Middles at Bradenham. 6.1km M21E.

Start ok but began to unravel in the circle of 2. Thought I'd matched the big depressions ok, but then just didn't find the control. Spent a while trying to match anything within sight to what was on the map. Eventually stumbled on control 142 on an area of flat ground surrounded by flat ground, near to some bushes. From map saw only candidate was a small depression north of my pit - and bearing in from there seemed to work. (2.5 mins)

More time loss at 5 - didn't get map to fit and ended up at ride beyond and had to go back in (1 min). Hesitant on 7 (30s). Map funny at 9 - much more runnable than shown, but found control ok thanks to others. Map just nothing like reality at 10 as found pits to south much sooner than should have - so had to resort to pathing in and then hoping second attempt would be better (1 min).

11 - overshot - 20s. Saw earth bank as contour as roughly in line with looping contour in OOB. Might have helped if circle was broken to show the brown dot on the line at bottom - but equally not convinced by quality of map printing.

16 - light green veg much harder to pass through than would be expected from earlier part of course. Thrown far off line and going hard. Ended up at control I thought was right but turns out it was pit at bottom of "1" on the overprint for 14 - well off course. 1 min.

Caught by tree on way to 17 and ripped by elbow wound open again. Not too much blood but meant it was hurting from here on in.

20 - found control on other clearing of same earthbank first. 21 - seemed very vague. Found control on pit to SW of 21 first, but took a long time, and odd direction, to find control. 1 min.

23-24, was going to head north back via 22 but other people I was running with went west so went with them. Poor choice. In the end cut the last bit to get there just ahead but could have saved 90s by doing my own thing.

26 - didn't get the map here. Relocated from fence to W. 30s. 27 - not really sure where I was at all but stuck to bearing, couldn't match anything until the barely-a-lump contour hillock appeared. 28 - stopped a little too early. In a long queue up to the tree in the field and hard going to overtake. Managed a gap on the run in so at least was able to open up for the finish.

9:30 of mistakes - so maybe could have managed 46:15? Implies that lots of people had scrappy runs too as lots slower than that who I wouldn't expect to beat.

Well planned course, but today continues my run of terrible results in these middle races. Just didn't get on well with today's map at all, and having to be careful with spring vegetation growth, trip and ankle hazards. Think my terrain confidence is quite low after last week.

Still good to get out. Biggest disappointment of all was how much I seemed to be struggling to run today.

Orienteering - Urban warm up/down 3:00 [3] 0.3 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 11 y

Warm up course and bit more before call up.

Orienteering - Urban race (British Sprints Qual) 18:06 [4] 3.68 km (4:55 / km) +30m 4:44 / km
slept:5.0 (injured) shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 11 y

British Sprints prologue. 3.6km course 1B.

Finding running tough today - harder than for most of Wednesday - due to injuries and aches.

Nice long-ish leg to 1 - almost got taken out leaving the start as busy reading map and not expecting people to be coming head on at me. Poor flow as struggling to remember control codes and having to check each description carefully because there were a lot of tricks put on other side of uncrossable boundary. Caught out on 9 as found description a bit confusing.

Second half went better; less fiddly short legs and map easier to read for these controls. Overshadowed a bit by the emitag not registering 15 at all. Of course I never make mistakes so I can't have just run straight from 14-16...

Fiddly, but fun, running reasonably well and probably better run than I had in qualifiers last year. Still would have been a long way down the results but should just have made B final if not DQed. Still, these things happen and enjoyed it so no need to get upset.

Orienteering - Urban race (British Sprints Final) 14:29 [4] 2.9 km (5:00 / km) +30m 4:45 / km
shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 11 y

Finals. Course C1 - 3.0km expected running distance.

Much less fiddly and easier to read map. A lot more about running fast. Taking more care with control flow after this morning - making sure I checked map again to confirm where going after leaving control - rather than checking emitag flashed as we were asked.

Bit of a mess leaving 6 - didn't realise uncrossable fence across road until I was on road - should have stayed up high and gone through white. WEnt via 8 to 7 to make sure I knew the side. Shouldn't have gone up steps on 11 - could have gone around bottom of hedge.

Overtaken by Romualdas going in to 12 and followed him from here on in - looking at map to make sure I was going to right controls and make sure routes were ok. Made pretty good progress, but quite simple. Finished about 8 of 30.

Not so keen on all these bits of tape put up to make temporary uncrossable barriers - wasn't aware this would happen from final details and going to 12 was running along path to find it was blocked off with little tape (on the map it is shown but very small, and could be mistaken for control circle) that isn't visibile until you run in to it. Found out after finishing that, not long before end, twice ran through an uncrossable fence that was just a path on the ground. Tiny line that is made less visible by the north line, flowerbed and paved edge. Organisers are within rights to DQ me - along with the over 100+ people who did this early on before fence was put up, but for a genuine mistake caused by a shortcoming of organisation - wouldn't be popular.

Enjoyed it, but preferred the morning run. Worth paying and coming - but might change my mind if I get DQed in both!

Orienteering - Urban race (Stoke Bishop Urban) 28:54 [3] 5.56 km (5:12 / km) +60m 4:56 / km
slept:5.0 (injured) shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 11 y

Stoke Bishop Halls. 4.1km middle course.

Wasn't going to come but being injured is pretty boring and need to do some urban before the weekend. Original plan was to walk the shortest course but during the afternoon revised upwards to jogging middle.

Fairly uncomfortable jogging up to the start, and for the first couple of controls, but got in to it. Just "jogging" down Parry's Lane but watch said 4:06/k! Quite a lot of 4 min/k jogging going on today...

Caught out by wall leaving 4 - nearly fell off it! Given the moans on nopesport of describing wall in Gloucester as "uncrossable" when apparently it should be "impassable" I note BOK call it uncrossable and they know a lot more about urban-o than the average o-club.

Went behind the library to 5 when probably best to go through car park for my course.

Caught out on 8 too - but map a bit funny and description not strictly valid. Still found it and enjoyed the challenge of working out where it was.

Route choice 18-19 sub-optimal. Maybe should have gone through lower rather than upper gate to Hollybush Lane, and dog-legged into control.

Really enjoyed it today, well planned, and hopefully good practice for Saturday. Pleased I'm still able to run too - but will still rest tomorrow. Probably could have managed long but happy to have ran down and well tired by the end.

Note
slept:2.0 (injured)

First ever "sick" day off work - managed two hours or so before pain in arm became quite unbearable and height of desk and chair giving discomfort on the side-scrape. As not totally with it, allowed to go home to take painkillers and rest.

Also working on Cotswold Way "A" team. Could well be a strong contender for mixed, so long as we get a third lady. Starting to worry that I might be pushed down to "B"...!
