Note
slept:2.0 (sick) (rest day)

Another 2 hours in Gloucester with Pat and Roger to talk over map amendments, likely issues and safety. Sounding good so far and seems like the entry fee will be kept down too.

Definitely less well today. Legs feeling a bit tight but nothing worse than to be expected after an AS fell race - not in pain. Ear still hurts though

Event: League 4

Note

Just had notification that, after 2.5 years, have finally lost my segment up the side of the Malverns by 20s! 90m ascent in 2 min 31 is pretty incredible so I'd be amazed if that time ever gets bettered - I won't be trying to regain the KOM!

Thursday's unwellness seemed to come back with vengeance today so biggest achievement was actually going (had Duncan's trophies to return). Put a brave face on and gave it a try.

Trying not to burn out through the fields to left Paul to get further ahead, and wasn't dropping Ifor. Got forced to queue at first stile as marshall wouldn't let people climb over adjacent fences. Then my calf blew up as we got onto the fell - and even walking uphill was extremely painful - couldn't even try to run, suspect it's to do with being constantly stretched when landing feet on the uphill.

First descent was a bit of a disaster, balance wasn't there at all, and cautious with metal studs on rock - lost at least 15 places. Second (steeper) ascent went better (gained 4) but it was more of a climb than run and was on all fours the whole way.

Second descent was not great, again couldn't balance (there's a bubble stuck in my ear or something which is annoying me too), and felt worse than the two previous times I'd descended - maybe had a worse route. Gave up and opted to sit down and slide for the last half. Down through the fields was fast and fine, calf wasn't complaining at all.

End result was 75th, which is quite a bit worse than last place last year. Depsite the issues, still managed to take 4:35 (10%) off from my time from 2012. In the bottom half again, but not too far, which is the same general area as usual.

Bit of a strange day as it seems some regular fell runners names appear in the Bixslade results, but a lot of orienteers here today - good job that Ben came along to get two NGOC ahead of the BOK pair. Not so good for me that it means I was only 5th best NGOC...

Knew it was Woodland Grove today as had spent the day feeling pretty unwell - turns out that custard doughnuts do help make you better.

Very few out as people too keen to get stuck in a traffic jam just outside Weston instead, and the wind was pretty nasty for the first half of each lap.

Times seemed fairly consistent - 3:16, 3:20, 3:18, 3:16, 3:14, 3:13 - for 850m sounds pretty bad, but given how much effort was required to fight the wind think it's actually the best I've done for this effort - still look forward to a day when I run this without feeling unwell!

Good to get out, even on a fairly rough night.

2.5 hours planning in Gloucester. Only 2 controls I've got to properly rethink on so fairly successful

Brailsford Lights run. Went out with group 3 but came back with 2 - thought I'd be more tired; pace in group 3 was at the slower end of reasonable, but was quite a bit of stopping and waiting. Moving in to combined group 1/2, seemed to be going well towards the front so clearly not as tired as I thought.

Turned into a reasonable effort towards the end so good to have made the switch.

New trainers feel a bit lose, so re-laced them and did them up tight, still seems a bit loose towards the heel, but tight at the front - strange, as just a newer version of the last 3 pairs.
