Orienteering 1:02:36 [3] 7.75 km (8:05 / km) +195m 7:10 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

HOC local at Callow Hill in Wyre Forest. 6.5km blue course.

Had a long chat with Jason Howell at the start with him now singing praises on Knockalls and also contemplating WNL (him admitting we were showing him up by running twice - we'll use that excuse later).

Was led to believe it was quite nice. It wasn't. Map was printed in green ink saving style and most off the paths was knee to thigh deep bramble. Oh well.

Mostly on my own by led into 2, 4 and 6 by Joe exiting.Quite often led others in. Not taking it too hard. Didn't find veg boundary 8-9. Then went the straight way to 10 and found the gap between green. Fed up with brambles after so went the shrotest route through fight.

11 only control not hidden in brambles. Left and completely tripped by vicious bramble, landed with all weight on hand, landed on bramble. Hurt.

Lost a minute or so on bingo control 13 which was a shame as right next to path and lots of walkers around who I'd just successfully confused by making them think I was Joe who had just ran past them a minute or so earlier...

Too far north on 16 and lost time tripping over brambles getting down to 17 as it was mapped in the wrong place. Having tried straight line all the way, wimped out and took path to 18 at the end.

Nice day, and good to take it easy, but I won't venture back here in a hurry. Was 3rd, 1 min behind Joe and David Williams when we left.

Note

Did some route choice testing in the car - Bromyard Downs to Kings Thorn, Joe along main roads through Hereford and me on minor roads via Mordiford. I won, but surprisingly there was only 90s in it over 40 minutes.

Orienteering - Night race (WNL Moseley Green) 59:10 [3] 7.89 km (7:30 / km) +145m 6:52 / km
shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

Last WNL. Mass start, less Ifor who went 2 mins ahead.

Route S-1-2-3-4-12-9-5-25-19-10-11-13-6-24-15-20-28-27-26-21-14-22-23-17-18-7-F. 690 points plus 8 points bonus for being 50s early.

Saw obvious route and when started Mark Saunders went off in same direction pretty quickly. By 2 we were breaking into a group of Mark, Jason, me and Joe so knew the fastest 4 had all had same idea. Mark and Jason went off ahead but kept catching by cutting off on 4-12 and them making mistake of 9 (further from road than mapped).

Struggled in the rough. Mostly following which was good as 25 didn't fit as expected at all. After 19/10 Jason/Mark out of sight leaving just me and Joe together.

Bit unsure on 13 - didn't see contours behind control number. 24 seemed to be in the open, lucky on this. Lost a bit on 27 as circle on spur not re-entrant and almost overshot 26 as disregarded crag as being the one just before. Struggled with hill up to 26.

Good line to 21 bang on. Tactic to 14 of down to valley then along unwise - not nice running. Poor line to 22 and too far east. Must have missed crossing big track and lots of people lost. Soon realised too far north so went back but it was lot further than expected. 1 min lost.

Very lucky on 18. Had good line and stopped in the right place and happened to see it.

Nice to clear it in time. Was a mix of me fighting to hold on to Joe and him trying to keep up with me - ended up doing the same thing and together throughout so good that my speed is up with his again.

About 90s down on Jason and pretty much joint 2nd. Shame about mistake at 22 as otherwise would have been very very close to the win. Great fun. Easily the highlight of this year's WNL season, if not all the orienteering I've done this year.

Orienteering race (Caerwent) 53:51 [3] 9.38 km (5:44 / km) +110m 5:25 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

MLC at Caerwent. 7.9km blue course.

Fairly simple orienteering but pleasant in the sun (although wind seemed against me both out and back).

No mistakes but running pace still very slow and walked a lot where I shouldn't have. Still good that I can at least run when tired.

Being very careful with ankle in rough. Turned a bit too much going into 18 but has felt fine since.

Surprised to be only 4 mins down on Duncan, Matt Whipple, Mark S, Ben give the above.

Loop around Ashton Court. No enthusiasm tonight and everyone else quite slow so didn't really try.
