Orienteering race (November Classic) 1:15:50 [4] 11.92 km (6:22 / km) +150m 5:59 / km
slept:4.0 weight:68.9kg (injured) shoes: VJ Integrator High (1)

November Classic at New Copse & Perrywood. 10.3km brown course.

Came mostly for the traders and to get away from home - foot quite swollen and struggling to walk on it. Brought the pair of shoes Mark was talking about on Wednesday as can't be having ankle go so often. Still hurt to walk in the new shoes but could just about run.

Surprised to have completed today given ankle, it starting to pour with rain at control 1 and not stop until 18 (an hour later...) and apart from holding a gate open for Adam barely saw anybody in the forest for the first hour. No warm up, suffering from stitch pretty badly from 5 onwards - first time I'd had stitch in 6 years or so, and feeling like I wanted to be sick from 11 onwards and having to keep stopping to let my stomach settle.

Slow to 1 - not trying. Too much west to 2, +45s, suspect everybody else did too. Hesitant into 11. Top route 12-13. Followed ride south then muddy ride east on 13-14 - pretty dull leg. Straight to 15, almost punched wrong control at 16 (about 30m apart). Then it all started to fall apart after road crossing.

Missed that I had to stick on paths for longer before heading down on 18 - +45s. Missed the stream I was going to work on for 19 (but was very lucky in turning and hoping). All over the place on 21 - in the end went for the power lines and found control behind me. 24 worst mistake - ended up in marsh NW of control. Only relocated on logic - saw smiley faces for white/yellow so knew they had to be on a mapped path.

Probably totals about 5.5 mins mistakes, maybe 5 mins due to trying to look after ankle - was very slow off the tracks and where it was muddy. A little disappointed with my performance but it's probably some achievement to complete the course at all given how hard walking is...

If I'd known the brown was going to so physically easy I'd have been tempted to have entered black.

Running - off road race (FoD Parkrun) 21:34 [4] 5.0 km (4:19 / km) +15m 4:15 / km
slept:3.5 weight:69.3kg shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

Forest of Dean Parkrun.

Taking it quite easy as too prone to pushing far too hard at this and knackering myself for rest of weekend. Pacing myself for 22 mins but sped up a bit as got overtaken on second lap and put in a sprint finish to regain the places.

Based on Joe's pace, and me being able to keep with him, should have managed pretty much 21 dead with more effort.

(injured) shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

As Fownhope cancelled using the day to have another check around/move controls and discuss further map updates at Knockalls. Productive but slow. May have spent over half an hour around 1 control. Only time I tried running my ankle turned very badly and has probably ended my season again - not taped or pre-painkillered as it's been good for so long - hurt a lot. Think I will have to take Mark Saunders's advice on shoes.

The area is still brilliant and runnable, and surprisingly flat, courses very good. 23rd Feb in case you didn't know...

Running (Westbury Harriers) 55:22 [5] 8.0 km (6:55 / km) +50m 6:43 / km
slept:4.5 weight:69.4kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

Six loops of Glenavon Park. Surprisingly consistent at between 2:05 and 2:10 every time despite feeling like I was getting worse.

Left calf started hurting on the way back. Has been doing so on and off since Tuesday - maybe something to do with 70 mins in stop-start traffic on the clutch?

Orienteering race (Long Valley South) 1:19:18 [3] 10.56 km (7:31 / km) +260m 6:41 / km
slept:4.0 weight:69.8kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

MLS at Long Valley South. 8.6km brown.

Started raining as I got to start but luckily passed over. Hesitant to 1 so stuck to paths early on. Went south from 4 as was going ok until the open. Then misinterpreted contours and paid more attention trying to avoid the worst of the tussocks and marsh rather than checking I was going the right way. Shouldn't have cut the corner off as cost me a good 2 mins.

Should have gone straight on 6-7. Brashings around 12, 16, 17 unpleasant so mostly a walk. The green going into 17 would have been ok had it not been for the bracken which was growing horizontally so kept catching on it. Not happy with 19 - caught stuck knee deep trying to go around the marsh only to find control a couple of contours higher than mapped. Should have gone around paths to the north and back in. Found the finish despite lack of tapes.

Not sure what to make of it overall. Some good long legs but controls were either very easy (on or just off paths) or in some crap. Map needs a bit of work in places but wouldn't expect a low key event to be perfect.

Running 1:04:46 [3] 10.6 km (6:07 / km) +100m 5:50 / km
slept:4.0 shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 10 g

From Cumberland Basin along the gorge than through Leigh Woods, back across Suspension Bridge.

Left foot hurting a bit from spending the last 70 minutes constantly on or adjusting the clutch - traffic worst I've known it coming here and been caught out three times before hence allowing 70 mins to do a mere 6 miles. Not sure I'll bother trying to come here next time.

On my own for most of the time along the river so taking it fairly easy. Put in a bit of an effort over the bridge to try and regain a top-10 position on Strava. Have to make do with 9th (was once 6th), only tied with Duncan. Should've tried harder.
