Trail run (38th New Forest Challenge) 5:12:00 [4] 26.5 mi (11:46 / mi) +240m 11:27 / mi
Route was an anti-clockwise circuit from Burley taking in Wilverley, Bolderford Bridge, Gritnam, Highland Water to Bolderwood Lodge and back, Acres Down, Ocknell, Backley Plain, Burley Lawn. The best of the New Forest in all its variety. Unfortunately, heavy rainfall meant the whole area was flooded or muddy and we didn’t even have the orienteers option of heading through the trees. So progress in most parts was very slow. Also, the route was really tricky, using unmapped paths or rides. Regulars or runners with gps were able to keep moving, but we mostly relied on those ahead to show us the way, although we were navigating ok in some of the easier sections. We were also hit by three hail storms, the third of which, while we were heading across treeless Ockley Plain, was ferocious and needed cagoules. Early plans for 10 minute miling were scuppered by the going but we kept it up where we could and were pleased with the way the checkpoints kept coming along to signal the passing of the miles. In fact, we agreed that although we were out longer it didn’t seem as far as the Tanners or Punchbowl. Didn’t feel quite so ‘broken’ at the end either. Real test will be rate of recovery before next Sunday’s half marathon. Aiming to slacken off a bit before that.
