Note

I was well over 2 hours in the car getting to and from Brighton, mostly because of heavy holiday traffic on the A27 through Arundel, Worthing and Shoreham. Being stuck was also very boring. I guess I'm just about prepared to tolerate it for the Devils Dyke trail race, but never again for a 20 minute sprint. We've had much longer races on this (very good) area, and I'd travel for another one of those, bit otherwise I'd rather go to parkrun locally.

Orienteering race (Sussex University sprint) 22:47 [4] *** 2.6 km (8:46 / km)
spiked:14/16c

Felt sluggish from Wednesday's hill. Need (again) to lose about 6 lbs. Had Neil starting behind me so wondered how long I'd stay in front. Answer: not very! I didn't see it at the time but he must have caught up a lot when I missed the tiny canopied gap between the buildings between 2 and 3. Otherwise I thought I was ok, apart from a biggish mistake after 9 when I thought I'd spotted the stairs up beside the steep bank immediately to its south, when in fact I was one flight north and climbing into a dead end. Then had to take the long route round to the north. That was annoying! Besides that, though, I was quite quick through the residential buildings I thought.

Cycling (Felpham and back) 1:05:00 [3] 22.0 km (2:57 / km)

Sports Day at school. I was on high jump, but refrained from having a go. Last time I hurdled I did for my back.

Trail race race (Roundhill Romp, Steyning) 44:19 [5] 9.5 km (4:40 / km) +200m 4:13 / km
rhr:44 weight:72kg

Mixed feelings at the start. Felt fresh and fit, but left ankle was sore and I hadn’t run fast for ages, so wasn’t sure how this was going to go. In the end it went ok. Went off a bit too fast near the front so let people pass along Mouse Lane and at the bottom of the climb whilst I settled into a sustainable pace. The hill just went on and on, and I walked briefly twice on a couple of very steep bits. Just tried to close or keep the gaps along the SDW, then turned for home. The downhill just wouldn’t come, so the narrow bit through the trees seemed interminable. Then it’s pretty much flat out to the finish. Had hardly anything left at the end of the run in so probably judged the effort right. Pretty pleased with that.

Inset Day, but fancied one more cycle before the hill race tomorrow evening. Nice tailwind home.
