12 PM

Walk (Y Garn) 4:30:00 [3] 16.0 km (16:53 / km) +850m 13:20 / km

The leftover Rhinog. From Dolgellau to Llanelltyd, then up onto the New Precipice Walk. Through the farm at Cesailgwm, then north into the forest, where I was nearly turned back by a wall I spent best part of an hour figuring how to cross. Then thought I was at the top when I was actually at Garn Fach, so headed north east and was then confused by a short ridge west of the summit. Made the top eventually at 2.45 in thickening light. Followed ridge south before turning east and coming out of the clag near Blaen-y-Cwm. Road to rejoin outward route at Llanelltyd.

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 21:51 [5] 5.0 km (4:22 / km) +50m 4:10 / km

Great way to start Christmas Day, especially with Lu putting in a strong winning performance in the ladies race. Had nobody to run off, and didn't look at watch, so tried to stay just within myself. Then ran for home from the start of the rugby pitches on third lap. Felt pretty good.

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 21:51 [5] 5.0 km (4:22 / km) +50m 4:10 / km

Would I feel any better? To begin with, no. But I was much happier and stronger on the second and third laps than usual. Wasn't 'dying'. Water and mud made time comparisons impossible. Tried to go with IB to see if I had improved, but he is in v good nick at the mo and I shouldn't worry about the gap he got. Took a few scalps so feeling mostly positive after today. Importantly, enjoyed it. And felt fine after too. Keep on doing what I'm doing.
1 PM

Walk (Eartham and Glatting Beac) 3:00:00 [3] 14.0 km (12:51 / km) +150m 12:12 / km

Eartham, Little Down, Great Down, Glatting Beacon loop, Stane Street, Eartham. Wondered if I might see Lu; was a day early.

With Jan. High Titten, The Burgh, Wepham Down, Lee Farm, Michelgrove, Monarchs Way, Findon, then SDW via Kithurst Hill and Amberley Mount. Some good new paths. Sandwich and pint at The Gun. Very enjoyable.

Note

Last two days of term way too wet to ride. December score bike 9 car 4 anyway. Annual mileage 2805, up 66% on last year. That's 1,115 miles of dedicated Velo South and Wiggle training. And almost 1700 miles of commuting.
6 PM

Road run (Chichester Trio) 1:18:51 [5] 11.0 mi (7:10 / mi) +45m 7:05 / mi
weight:70kg shoes: saucony swerve

Breakthrough. 11 road miles at parkrun pace. In a monster hail storm. Hips and legs totally niggle-free, but will need to be very careful now with lower left back. Was all trepidation and anxiety ahead of this, 10 days since last run, and thought I might be so slow I'd get cold. Actually felt marvellous as soon as I started to run and like I could have blitzed a single lap. And then, apart from tiring arms and shoulders, float-y feeling mostly persisted through Terminus Road and second Summersdale lap. Such joy! This is what I've been missing for two years. The longer easier runs have been the answer, somehow sorting out my posture. I've definitely been feeling much looser down there since I did the 8 miles.

Trail race (Oaklands Park) 1:02:17 [4] 8.0 mi (7:47 / mi) +90m 7:31 / mi
weight:70kg

First attempt at finding a pace I can keep up for 26 miles. Ran to Oaklands Park then did six parkrun laps before running back. Felt uncomfortable but not quite distressed. So relieved to start the final lap. Soft going underfoot. I have to build up this long run steadily; there are no short cuts.

Orienteering race (Inholmes Blue) 48:53 [4] *** 6.2 km (7:53 / km) +130m 7:08 / km
spiked:20/22c weight:70kg

Tried to ignore the heavy rain and mud. And besides updating the map (at Easter) I also did almost 2 hours on map sales. It's always nice to be back though, even with the shouty scouts this time round. I'm slightly handicapped as, to orienteer well, you need 100 per cent focus on nav and I can't give that as I'm watching the ground so much for trip hazards. Controls (depressions) kept coming up though as we criss-crossed the ridge. Slight slip at 7 when I went to wrong flag and couldn't relocate, but compass was pretty secure elsewhere. Felt like I was out for longer (22 controls?) so pleased with time and result.
