Walk (Chi Harbour and Wittering) 5:30:00 [2] 24.0 km (13:45 / km)
weight:70kg

Right hip and knee were quite bad yesterday evening, so did this for a shakeout. Both were sore for about 3 miles then loosened up. From Chi Marina crossed the fields to East Witt, then walked along the beach to West Witt, round East Head, and back along the edge of the Harbour. Will give the Flyers 5 a go, I think.

Cycling (Chilgrove and Westbourne) 2:30:00 [3] 29.5 mi (5:05 / mi) +330m 4:55 / mi

The wheels on the bike go round and round. New route: Chilgrove, East Marden, Stoughton, Westbourne, Woodmancote, West Ashling, Bosham, Hoe, home. Enjoyed pretty much every yard of the way (even if my 'challenge' is now being put into perspective by what Justin is achieving). Time absolutely flew by. Didn't need to stop. Really want to ride first half of Velo now. Three weeks left.

Cycling (Velo South second half) 5:25:00 [5] 62.0 mi (5:15 / mi) +1000m 5:00 / mi

Got the 1109 train to Horsham then cycled home along miles 45-100 of the Velo South route. Christs Hospital, Barns Green, Toat Hill, Five Oaks (sandwich stop), A29, A281, Tismans Common, Loxwood, Ifold, Plaistow (protein bars), Shillinglee, Gospel Green, Lickfold, Fernhurst, Milland, Coombe Hill, Rogate, South Harting (protein bars), Harting Hill, Compton, East Ashling, Lavant, Goodwood, home. So many places familiar from walks I've been on round here. Felt pretty much ok but do worry about speed, especially on the many 'little hills' sections. Did manage to get all the way up both the big beasts at the end, which was pleasing, but only saved 20 secs on Harting by not walking! At least the first 45 miles should be a bit quicker? Realised near the finish that for the sake of a single 100 mile closed roads ride, I'm cycling 100s of miles in training on roads where the traffic is sometimes just horrible. Huh?

Road run race (Southsea parkrun) 21:01 [5] 5.0 km (4:12 / km)
weight:70.5kg

Beautiful day for it. Got to halfway in 10.30 so was a bit disappointed by that, but I had been held up quite a bit at the start, caught out by the narrowness of the Prom. Felt alright and was overtaking throughout second half though, and finished with equal splits so have to be encouraged. Southsea is way cooler than Worthing. Fabulous views of Isle of Wight.

Walk (Chi canal and Harbour) 3:30:00 [1] 15.0 km (14:00 / km)

Just to enjoy the weather and the wildlife.

Cycling (Warblington lap ...) 2:17:00 [3] 28.5 mi (4:48 / mi) +200m 4:42 / mi

... with Chidham and Bosham loops. Day doesn't seem complete without a turn of the pedals. This was meant to be a quarter Velo with no effort whatsoever, but I was pretty tired towards the end. That may be hangover from Monday though. At least, if riding any distance is always gonna hurt, then I'm getting used to it. Did enjoy myself. Average speed just over 12mph.

Cycling (Westergate and Buriton) 6:30:00 [4] 115.0 km (3:23 / km) +750m 3:17 / km
weight:70kg

Blimey, what a day. Bike with Ben from Westergate rv through Chi to Emsworth and Rowlands Castle, then Chalton (wrong route), Buriton, Harting, Compton, East Marden, Walderton, West Stoke, Lavant, Halnaker, Eartham, Slindon, Westergate, Chichester. As usual I struggled on both up and down hills but now know for sure that whether I complete the Velo will depend on maintaining a very comfortable pace/effort right from the start and then all day. And I will be walking some of the later hills, but that doesn't matter. Moving time given, but we actually ran quite late because at the cafe stop at Compton at 36 miles I dropped my bike and house keys down a water filled drain. I couldn't just leave them, but with no help forthcoming from the authorities we were eventually reliant on the kindness of strangers and the gumption of my partner to effect a retrieval. What a massive relief to get them back. I'm so pleased we put this behind us and finished the ride as well. It was pretty superb and conditions were almost ideal too. This Velo thing is taking me to some very strange places. Distance/climb stats courtesy Strava. Calories burnt 3778 apparently.

Walk (From Gustard Wood) 7:00:00 [2] 27.0 km (15:33 / km)

Recreation of (close to) the first walk I ever did after discovering an old 1st series 1 inch OS map of the area where I lived and being astounded by the opportunities this 'passport' seemed to open. Aged 11, I think. With younger brother (age 10?) and a friend. From GW to Ayot St Lawrence, then Codicote Heath, Langley, Hitch Wood, Stagenhoe, Bendish, Whiteway Bottom, Kimpton. Undulating arable countryside with well-signed and good paths. Almost every field full of stubble. Apart from the start and finish hardly anything was familiar. Start of a lifetime's exploring.

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 21:23 [5] 5.0 km (4:17 / km) +50m 4:04 / km

Plan was not to die at start of second lap. Conservative first lap left me down the field a bit but I had the legs for hills 2 and 3 and the final sprint so caught a fair few. Pretty niggle-free run, and nothing that a bit of c-v training wouldn't improve on. Hopefully I can get out on the bike too a bit later.

Cycling (Tour de Selhurst ...) 1:41:00 [3] 20.0 mi (5:03 / mi) +300m 4:50 / mi

... and Singleton. Spent a lot of time on Friday trying to fix the front derailleur so I could use the small ring for steeper hills, and was pleased when I seemed to sort it. This was a tryout. And it was ok. Favourite old route of old, though slightly spoilt by brisk south-westerly in second half. Speed and effort are going to be my enemies on Velo day.

Cycling (Billingshurst and back) 4:45:00 [5] 54.0 mi (5:17 / mi) +1150m 4:57 / mi
weight:71kg

Time to add some hills to the distance. First: 25 miles to Billi in 2 hours 6 mins via Goodwood, Selhurst, Upwaltham, Barlavington, Shopham, Fittleworth, Bedham road and Wisborough Green. Outside left knee emerged as weak spot almost from the first incline but I think it was just a sign of massive discomfort generally. But I was ok to this point, probably helped by tail wind. After lunch with Jan, set off back. Only this time decided to avoid the surprisingly hilly Bedham section and Duncton Hill (which I'd been very pleased to get down ok and without mishap). Battled the headwind on the A29 to Pulborough then reversed route to Shopham Bridge, where I headed east via Heath End, Graffham and Heyshott Green. Completed 29 mile route in 2 hours 37 mins through Cocking, West Dean and Lavant, where the headwind was back. One little kicker after another through the Ambersham section finally broke my spirit and I had to get off and walk. I have to face the fact this may happen in the Velo too, but it gives me a chance to 'rest' my legs, and I'm probably moving about as fast as I would be on the bike anyway. At least I managed to get up the 50m hill out of Cocking, although don't ask me how. This was MUCH HARDER than my regular flatter ride and I suppose the only encouragement I can take from today is that I managed 83 per cent of the total Velo climb. Average speed almost 11.5 mph.

Hillwalking (Southern Rhinogs) 7:00:00 [4] 18.0 km (23:20 / km) +1320m 17:04 / km
weight:71kg

From the roadhead at Nantcol we took the non-existent right of way onto the shoulder of Rhinog Fawr before mercifully locating the thin path which wiggled a way to the summit. Superb views of Snowdonia and a temptation to linger but this was a biggish day and the weather looked set to turn. Lu did sterling work following the trickle of path down to the Bwlch Drws Ardudwy, a descent which takes an eternity. Then there's the 300 metre pull up the wall of Rhinog Fawr, another very satisfying summit. With the rain arriving we gratefully left the rough bounds of the Rhinogs behind and headed between Llyns Hywel and y Bi for the grassier slopes of Y LLethr, then in thick mist followed the wall over Crib-y Rhiw to Diffwys. After leaving the west top we took a bearing to the track beside Llyn Bodlyn then followed the path over the shoulder of Moelfre and back to the farm and car.

Hillwalking (Northern Rhinogs) 8:30:00 [4] 19.0 km (26:51 / km) +650m 22:55 / km

Set off from Dinas campsite in light rain and followed Ardudwy Way through Ffridd Farm and then between Moels Goedog and y Gerddi to join mine track passing between Llyns Eiddew Mawr and Bach. By now the sun was out. Then straightest possible line for Moel Ysgyfarnogod and Foel Penelau. After that it was pick your route over the numerous tops of Craig Ddrwg past a couple of pretty lakes to the cairn on Clip and a pretty horrendous descent to Llyn Cwm Bychan, battling boulders, bog and deep heather. The road march back to the camp site came as a bit of a relief.

Hillwalking (Northern Black Mountains) 6:00:00 [3] 16.0 km (22:30 / km) +400m 20:00 / km

Actually spotted this route from Mynydd Troed the day before, and the useful car park too. From Pengenfford up Y Grib and then along the ridge to Lord Hereford's Knob. Decided against the out and back to Hay Bluff then found the path down in a vicious rain storm. Didn't need to use all the field paths to return to start as there was a delightful permissive stroll all the way right below the scarp, which was like a super-charged South Downs.

Hillwalking (Western Black Mountains) 8:00:00 [4] 26.0 km (18:28 / km) +1320m 14:43 / km

From Cwmdu up to Mynydd Llangorse, then over Mynydd Troed to Pengenfford. Good views of the high Black Mountains all morning. Finally found a path through the bracken to the col below Pen Trumau, then along the ever-so-familiar and actually quite boring ridge to Pen Cerrig-Calch, which was probably further than I should have gone. Took a bearing to pick up the contouring Beacons Way below and back to the start. Good start which deteriorated as I went too far and too fast. Still crocked from Sunday.

Hillwalking (Fan y Big circuit) 5:00:00 [3] 17.0 km (17:39 / km) +620m 14:56 / km

Recovery walk. Parked in Llanfrynach then went up the hill (Bryn) behind the campsite and along Gist Wen to Craig Cwareli where I rejoined yesterday's race route. Detoured along the Beacons Way to a viewpoint where I could make out most of the race route and began to see why I'd found it so tough. Then up the top we missed yesterday, Fan y Big, for the spectacular view of the Beacons. Happy to sit a while in the sunshine here before taking Cefn Cyff off, then driving to Brecon for extra food and coffee.

Fell race race (Brecon Beacons Fell Race) 4:42:13 [5] 30.6 km (9:13 / km) +1372m 7:32 / km
weight:71kg

Didn't do this very well. Probably started too fast, but the cut-off at 1200 about 7 miles in looked very tight. As it was I was just outside, but given I was still in front half of the field at this point it was unlikely they were going to pull out half the race. Powered up the first climb with Lu without problem but was storing up muscle trouble for later. Actually 'raced' the first ridge but I was already walking some of the ups mostly because of the rocky going underfoot. After the 'cut off' at the water station I relaxed. The second big climb was real hard in the heat, and despite eating everything I had, I couldn't get going again when we got to the top. I probably ran for no more than a few seconds together after this. The 'downs' over the Beacons offered no respite as the braking effect on quads and painful toes made everyone grimace. The 'last' hill was a consolation, but there was still a heck of a lot of rough rocky path ahead and I got passed by a fair few - mostly women - here. I had no response. Staggered over the line quite comfortably ahead of the sweeper in the end, but I was a long way off my hoped-for time. Only when I got a view the next day of the race route as a whole did I gain a sense of the achievement, given that this is an arduous 10-12 hour walk for anyone daft enough to tackle it in one go. 23rd position after the first climb had become 37th (out of 53) by the end. 7th V50+ out of 12.

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 21:26 [5] 5.0 km (4:17 / km) +50m 4:05 / km

Bit of a risk doing this with the Beacons 20 mile Fell Race tomorrow, so the focus was on how I'd feel at the finish. Which was marginally better than usual. Had rivals Slogs and Luddles present but put them out of mind and concentrated on style and effort. Time and position weren't too bad considering, so Chris can take all the credit for his 17 second victory. He got a gap on second hill and probably wanted it more. Hot!
