Hillwalking (Tayside Corbetts) 6:00:00 [4] 18.0 km (20:00 / km) +850m 16:11 / km

Farragon Hills. Felt like a rest day so brought this forward from a short Saturday. At least I'd have the mine track for most of it. Hadn't reckoned on the complex nav which followed. Reached the first summit, Meall Tairnachean, in thick mist then noted with some dismay the broken nature of the intervening ground to the second. Perhaps there'd be a path. After the mine track petered out there wasn't and I was left with a b/w photocopied map and the contours to get me up the right hill. Found the loch then a reentrant and then the ridge all heading in the right easterly direction so ploughed on through the heather. Breathed a huge sigh of relief when the ground started to rise up steeply and i knew I had the corbett. Different route off, just followed compass.

Hillwalking (Tayside Corbetts) 4:30:00 [5] 10.0 km (27:00 / km) +740m 19:42 / km

Stob a'Choin. Logged as intensity 5 because whole day was somewhat against the clock, and made more so by the slow progress up and down the single track road through Balquidder. Good to get a completely different perspective on the Crianlarich hills of 1992 and 2000. When I came here for a leftover Beinn Tulaichean in 2005 the weather gave no view of anything. Today was stupendous. The hill looked unclimbable. but there was a ridiculously steep option as described in the book, which was more vertical than anything. Couldn't resist the alternative descent route via Meall Ramhar. Then drive back down the glen for ...

Hillwalking (Tayside Corbetts) 4:30:00 [4] 12.0 km (22:30 / km) +560m 18:15 / km

Stob Fear-tomhais. From Glen Buckie. Set off very reluctantly about half 2 with very weary legs indeed. The Right of Way was in poor nick, which didn't help mood. Once I'd crossed the river and reached the hill I just got my head down and on with it. When the top wouldn't appear I did wonder whether I'd even come up the right hill. In my haste. The top was a lovely spot and the descent in the lengthening shadows pleasant too.

Meall an t-Seallaidh and Creag MacRanaich. Guidebook was no help with combining these two, so improvised a route from Lochearnhead via Craggan and Glen Kendrum. No difficulties. Cloud down to about 700m so needed compass for right line early on, and then put myself at its mercy for the 'traverse of rather complicated ground' between the two hills. Actually enjoyed the finicky detail of this, and came out on the south top just as the clag was lifting to give me a sight of the true north top. Got a good line off after heading towards Meall Sgallachd.

Hillwalking (Tayside Corbetts) 7:00:00 [4] 25.0 km (16:48 / km) +1100m 13:46 / km

Ben Ledi and Ben Vane. How long have I wondered if I'd do these together? Tourist path up to Ledi made for quick going in the heat, but route finding on the ridge was a bit random. Came down near Laggan then followed lochside cycle path back to car. Hot!

Beinn Each via Glen Ample. That rarety, a Corbett with a good path all the way. As the going was so quick and the weather good decided to revisit Stuc a'Chroin and recce the fell race route, but had underestimated the challenge. Managed to turn an easy half day into an arduous challenge. Camped at Keltie Bridge.

Road run race (Bognor Prom 10k) 42:06 [5] 10.0 km (4:13 / km)
shoes: saucony swerve

Been wanting to do this for a year. Although wasn't expecting much beyond a good run and respectable time. Set off at what felt like sustainable pace and reached 3k in 12.40 so 42 mins looked on if I could keep it up. That would do. Just enjoyed the simplicity and friendliness of the route and the support of the crowd. More passed me than I passed but I was surprised to be joined by SJ at around 4k. He was very erratic though and after surging and fading dropped right away by the time we were back in the town. Found the return along the prom with a slight tailwind a real pleasure and was overtaking more by this point. But best of all, Lu won the ladies race!

Trail race race (Beach Run) 33:26 [5] 5.0 mi (6:41 / mi)

The big test. And it began badly as right knee and ankle were far from right during warm up. I'd have to be very careful how I started and hope a good action established early on would get me to the finish. Went off pretty quick as I actually felt quite fresh, and focussed on style. Really enjoyed the splashy sand and was a bit surprised when I remembered the grass section had been dropped. Got to the turn in 17 and bits with Kav and everyone else behind and now we had a tailwind. Big boost to confidence and I thought I'd hold on. But Kav and Jinks, running together, caught me in mile 4 and it was really who wanted it most after that. My priority was on a good finish. When we hit the hard sand I thought about trying to get a gap and seeing if a competitive instinct would see me to the line, as I'm sure we were all throttled up to the max, but I didn't. I was just pretty pleased to be up with them, to be finishing so strong, and with the time, especially after the biomechanical issues of the last year. Buzzing after. Whole thing was a total blast and I'm so relieved and a bit surprised it went so well.

Orienteering race (Worth Lodge) 1:00:57 [4] *** 6.4 km (9:31 / km) +180m 8:21 / km
spiked:10/16c

Rusty technique not helped by niggling right hip. Had no qualms about walking on hills or in the worst terrain. Lost some confidence and 1 minute on the way to 2, but worst mistake was 5 when I wandered off bearing too far south and up the hill (2 mins). Not quite sure about 7: seemed to be on the next stream 80m to west, but I could have been on the ride rather than the path (1 min). Seemed to fare better once we got on the old map, spiking 12 and 13 and picking out a good route for the long leg 15. Four minutes quicker would have been an OK result.

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 21:02 [5] 5.0 km (4:12 / km) +50m 4:00 / km

Top three and sub-21 would have been very nice, but I'll settle for that for now. Got to the end of comfortable first lap in 7th and 6.45 so knew something was on. After that it was mostly a case of not out-running my legs, which threatened to turn to mush every time I tried to step it up. Niggling hip only marginally better but focussed on the improvement this week rather than the journey still to travel. Now, stretch!

Trail run (SDWR 12 recce run) 1:40:00 [5] 11.0 mi (9:05 / mi) +360m 8:15 / mi
rhr:52 weight:73kg

Parked at Cocking and ran leg 12 of the relay both ways with Lu. Reverse half was just fine so went all the way down to the A285 changeover. Managed the big hill back but started to feel a bit mortal in the heat and the ups and downs and had to rest a couple of times to let tightness in chest pass. Usual stiffness all over afterwards; I'm sure the right stretching regime could sort this.

No improvement, despite third week of cutting wine intake by 50%. Ah well, will settle for consolidation. Was ahead of a few regulars as well. Hip discomfort before and after, so must have been battling biomechanic problems. Certainly didn't feel like doing a whole 10k. Glorious morning though.
