Dare to hope? Hips have definitely felt 'looser' for two weeks now, but still vulnerable. Today's warm up promised nothing, but as soon as we started (on old summer course - hoorah!) I felt significantly better. Looser, springier, younger. And the upshot? I really enjoyed myself and never felt troubled by the a) effort or b) distance. SL said I looked like my old self, and he had the perfect view. Disappointed by time in the circumstances but we were battling mud again.

Really didn't want to do this. March score (pace Beast from the East I and II and Corp Chall 2 and 3) bike 10 car 10.

Car at garage for new tyres. Of course, the rain stopped as soon as I got to work. Headwind home.

Orienteering race (Angmering Park E) 40:11 [5] *** 4.8 km (8:22 / km) +80m 7:44 / km
spiked:7/11c weight:73kg

Only entered as the forecast was for warm sun, when it was actually overcast and cool. Didn't really fancy the area or the reported mud so stuck to green. Which was about right as I'd sort of had enough after 40 minutes. Distracted start due to chit chat meant I began panicking on the muddy track to 1 as I couldn't be sure where I was or what the map scale was. Amateur-ish. Ended up going straight for 3 to 6 even though I'd thought beforehand I'd stick to paths. They were mudbaths and I couldn't face returning to them. Went through brambles to 6 after I found a small track. 7 to 10 were mostly path runs, but I lost over a minute at 8 through rushing and picking the wrong mudbath. Probably about 3 mins lost all together so missed target time of 30-something. Nice atmosphere though.

Faster at CC3 didn't translate into faster at OP. Was muddier though, if mild enough for vest and shorts (just). Conservative effort handicapped by lower back. Might be worth mentioning I wore old prescription distance lens in right eye. Enjoyed it all the same.

Pain in left hip after Sunday had gone. In light of changed prescription for right eye wore two left-eye lenses. Splits were roughly 4.23, 4.27, 4.30, 4.32. May have rushed second lap a bit to get a gap on Chris, and worried I'd blow it, but was just ok. In the end quite pleased (and a bit surprised) to be about 15 secs quicker. Encouraging. Slightly easier jog home too.

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 22:16 [5] 5.0 km (4:27 / km) +80m 4:07 / km

Not feeling good pre-start and warm up so decided just to do my own thing. Floated up first hill and surprised to find myself in good company. Even so, ignored them and focussed on staying comfortable. Was overtaking on third and fourth hills, which is always an inspiration, and downhills were a bit drier. The bitter wind seemed not to be a problem. Usual discomfort (right leg) after.

Struggled on second hill, but found something for third and fourth and made up a few places. That was nice. Off the path you just went as fast as the mud would allow.

Road run race (Corporate Challenge) 18:10 [5] 4.5 km (4:02 / km)

Much prefer running at this time to 9am, but leg speed still completely lacking and chest pinching a bit. Very conservative start (4.20 lap) so was behind Sloggs through 2nd (4.35) and 3rd (4.40) and, as he looked fine, was resigned to just keeping going as fast as I could. But he slowed at start of 4th, and after I passed him (slooowly) didn't stay with me and I got a gap. Core exercise has strengthened lower back, but biomechanically I'm still all wrong.

Trail race ((Parkrun)) 22:33 [5] 5.0 km (4:31 / km) +80m 4:11 / km

Chi parkrun was cancelled because of snow and ice, but I ran it anyway in the muddy slush. To judge from the footprints it looked like a few others had the same idea. Chiefly hampered by hips. Stretching routine seems to have moved problem from lower back to top of hamstrings, particularly the right one. Started steady and saved a bit for the last lap. Struggled to jog home so it was a good job it had warmed up a bit.
