Road run race (Worthing parkrun) 21:28 [5] 5.0 km (4:18 / km)
weight:71kg

First run of 58th year. Feeling my age. Cold and breezy on the prom and I realised warming up I had no appetite to put my body through this. Started steady and just gritted my teeth against the soreness. Headwind for outward half meant tailwind for return. Just pleased to finish in ok time.

Back felt significantly 'different' following ibuprofen-free recovery from spasm on Wednesday morning. I was optimistic. Blasted out the start but couldn't keep up with Lu. I was with people who usually leave me for dead though, and, most importantly, I felt much better. Performance comparison impossible, unfortunately, as conditions were terrible. Absolute mudbath. Course was altered to avoid 'ponds' at the bottom, but top of park was just as bad. There were millions of tail enders too and they really got in the way. Reasons to be cheerful: felt much more comfortable on fast metalled downhill, could still run/jog after the finish, and I'm not entered for Winter Tanners tomorrow.

Note

Back went into spasm in the night when I got up for the loo. Took an ibuprofen and got back into bed. Thought I might struggle to get to work but managed socks and wash ok so went for it. Couldn't have cycled Thursday either but things were a bit better and by the evening I could manage some gentle core exercises. Actually felt slightly better aligned. Cycling would have been possible on Friday but I decided to stick with core workout and give myself a chance of parkrun. Had almost volunteered instead this week but luckily the roster was full.

Walk (Seaford Head) 4:30:00 [1] 11.0 mi (24:33 / mi) +180m 23:21 / mi

Parked at High and Over for circular tour of Seaford via Camp Hill, Bishopstone, seafront and Cuckmere Haven. Mostly to avoid mud. Almost every step a delight. Just ignored back completely (new tactic).

Trail race race (Chichester parkrun) 22:45 [5] 5.0 km (4:33 / km) +50m 4:20 / km

Back was sore the night before and I worried for the morning. But there was nothing when I woke up. Nor during the warm up or race. Right ankle hurt after though and I couldn't jog back. Muddy conditions so slower times, but I'm playing a long game.

Road run race (Worthing parkrun) 21:27 [5] 5.0 km (4:17 / km)

Mostly just relieved to get through this. Back was so bad when I got up I took an ibuprofen but wondered if it could work in time. Warming up in Worthing I wasn't sure I could run at all. Felt slightly better after a few stretches and decided to see how it went. Conditions almost perfect. Got to turn in 9.50, but perceived imbalance prevented me stepping it up, as I wanted so much to do. Got overtaken a bit but was focussed on just getting to the finish. May have been a bit fatigued from brisk evening walk last night. Just have to hope this was part of ongoing rehabilitation.
