Road run (Summersdale and South Str) 32:31 [5] 7.5 km (4:20 / km)
weight:69kg

Old 8k route re-measured. I knew I was rusty but thought weight would help. Not sure it did. Time is woefully slow given effort. I have paid the price for all the steady running. Catastrophic loss of c-v fitness.

Walk (Sussex Border Path) 7:00:00 [3] 27.0 km (15:33 / km) +200m 15:00 / km

Parked at Compton then walked south through West Marden and Stansted Forest and House to pick up SBP. Then through Finchdean and Chalton, where I thought we might head back. But Lu was feeling alright, so we kept on up West Harting Down to SDW at Foxcombe Fm, then last 4 miles to rejoin car. We were prepared for rain, but none came. And the sun even came out in the afternoon. Fabulous day. Felt pretty good.

Walk (Pagham Harbour) 4:15:00 [3] 18.0 km (14:10 / km)
weight:69.5kg

Bit of a trip down memory lane while the car's at the garage. Along the canal to Hunston then over the fields to Sidlesham via Brimfast and Halsey's Farm. Then along the harbour to Honer Fm and back via South Mundham. What a treat!

Trail race race (Seven Stiles, Henfield) 27:31 [5] 4.0 mi (6:53 / mi)
weight:69.5kg

Really needed a race today as I was beginning to forget what it was like to run (rather than jog). And nearly didn't have one as the A24 was closed on the way there for some reason and we only made the start with 10 minutes to spare. Felt fairly light and springy (good) but hips, knees, ankles all felt odd/out of alignment (bad). How would it go? Conditions were really good (apart from the overgrown path beside the river) so I mostly enjoyed the run. After we'd formed up in the right sort of order I ran with a small group till we rejoined the cycle track, then picked it up some and had a bit left at the end. 10 secs down on last two years, but then I haven't really done any speedwork training. On the whole I think i'm encouraged.

Walk (Thorney Island) 4:00:00 [1] 14.5 km (16:33 / km)

Perfect day (hot!) for an easy stroll round Thorney Island. Barely counts as training but any time on my feet must be doing my back/hips some good. Very pleasant, all butterflies and birds.
3 PM

Walk 2:00:00 [2] 10.0 km (12:00 / km) +40m 11:46 / km

As it was a bit early I decided to continue along the Sussex Border Path through Westbourne for about 3 miles before finding a route back over the fields.

Trail run (Downland Dove) 1:56:00 [5] 21.0 km (5:31 / km) +450m 4:59 / km
weight:69kg

13 mile trail run on a route of Lucy's devising (and naming) starting from Whiteways and heading over Glatting Beacon to Eartham, then down to and back along Stane Street to Bignor. Down the long grassy descent of Great Down, turning left at the bottom to Madehurst, then left up the lane to Stammers and finally back along the Denture. Good job I took a map as the nav wasn't as easy as I thought and I even missed the Great Down turn and added half a pointless mile. Something - the stopping and checking, the heat, the hills, this weekend, a lack of food - made me feel more tired than I'd anticipated and I was running on empty by the finish. Hip felt 'all wrong' as usual but didn't seem to interfere with the running, which was good for about 70 mins (as usual) but very tough going after that. Good to get out together though.

Trail run (High Weald Challenge) 4:22:00 [4] 32.0 km (8:11 / km) +650m 7:26 / km

Andredsweald Circuit. LDWA event from Forest Row eastwards over extensive tracts of Ashdown Forest and round Hartfield, then back via farmland. As ever, great fun trying to keep moving at a fair clip whilst following the detailed route description. Didn’t look at a map throughout. Via Broadstone Warren, Chelwood and Pippingford to begin, which I barely recognised without their inches deep coating of mud, then under Camp Hill to the A.A. Milne/E.H. Sheppard monument and Five Hundred Acre Wood. Kept up a steady jog here, but leaving the forest we encountered the long wet grass which soaked shoes and feet and discouraged running, especially on hard surfaces. We pushed to the end though, a combination of running and walking (uphills and overgrown paths), and were first finishers on the longer courses, just ahead of the first 26-miler. Steady drizzle throughout, then sun came out as we finished.

Trail race race (Stansted Park Half Marath) 1:49:58 [5] 21.0 km (5:14 / km) +365m 4:49 / km
weight:69.5kg

Did this more to see what's going on with my lower back/hips than anything else. Took a tablet so had no trouble with them, but they 'feel' very very wrong. May account for slower pace, although the overgrown paths and mud didn't help either. Was meant to be intensity 4 but got a bit carried away after finding myself near the front. Thereafter I was overtaken by several in the first couple of miles and a few more (youngsters) in the last couple. Hills seemed tougher than last year and underfoot conditions certainly were. I was alright till the climb out of West Marden just after mile 9, but thereafter I was merely hanging on. Six minutes slower than last time but results/finish position will be interesting.
9 PM

Note

Finished in 17th overall, fourth M50 (again), and 7 minutes (again) behind fastest vet. So perhaps result wasn't worse than last time. The conditions just made a tough course tougher.
