Orienteering race (Hatch Warren, Basingstoke) 55:40 [5] *** 6.5 km (8:34 / km) +95m 7:59 / km
spiked:12/20c rhr:46 weight:72kg

Knee hurt climbing stairs and my back felt dodgy, but I really enjoyed myself here last time. Struggled from the start today though, no mojo. Noticed in the start lane that there were uncrossable fences everywhere so knew the challenge would be mental. Legs 2 and 3 were very technical, and I simply went for the easy long option rather than test eyesight with the footpath routes. Not a winning strategy. I probably missed the best route to 5, the long leg, as well. 6 to 14 felt better, mostly because I was obviously moving much faster than all the (very old) other competitors, but I probably dropped half minutes more at 7 and 10 by missing cut-throughs. Thought I'd devised a brilliant plan for the other long leg to 15 and ran hard. Straight into an overgrown dead end! Ah well, that was that. Two to three minutes in a race like this is a disaster. Felt better through the final five controls though and was relieved to be pushing still after almost an hour. But I'd pay the price. At least the sun shone.

Walk (Isle of Wight Coast Path) 3:30:00 [3] 9.0 mi (23:20 / mi) +200m 21:50 / mi

Disappointing finale. Too much busy road. Perhaps we should have done Osborne House, which is brill apparently. Got coffee at Quarr Abbey. Drizzly all morning.

Walk (Isle of Wight Coast Path) 7:30:00 [3] 19.0 mi (23:41 / mi) +450m 22:04 / mi

Totland to West Cowes, being mostly a circumnavigation of the Newtown estuary. Which was flooded by a very high tide in places so boots had to be removed. Feeling quite jaded by the time we got to Shalfleet and Newtown.

Walk (Isle of Wight Coast Path) 6:30:00 [3] 12.0 mi (32:30 / mi) +550m 28:27 / mi

Brighstone to Totland via Freshwater Bay, the Needles and Alum Bay. Best day weather- and scenery-wise. And short, so time to dawdle on Tennyson Down. As ever, so nice walking into the evening. Still feeling flat rather than fit.

Walk (Isle of Wight Coast Path) 7:30:00 [3] 16.0 mi (28:07 / mi) +800m 24:21 / mi

Shanklin to Brighstone, via the Chine, Undercliff, Ventnor and Chale. Jurassic Coast type conditions early on, followed by spectacular waves creating great photo ops. Then the best bit of the entire walk along the sandy cliff tops after Blackgang. Superb walking, but felt a bit lethargic. Post-viral?

Walk (Isle of Wight Coast Path) 6:30:00 [3] 15.0 mi (26:00 / mi) +400m 24:01 / mi

Ryde Pier to Shanklin. Jan's brilliant idea, as an alternative to Cornwall at half term. The entire Isle of Wight (where I've never been before) coastline. Day 1 via Bembridge and Sandown. Mostly bucket and spade country.

Orienteering race (St Albans City Race) 55:56 [5] 6.5 km (8:36 / km) +115m 7:54 / km
rhr:50 weight:71kg

So rusty orienteering-wise. Probably a good one to come back with. Plus an opportunity to run through the town where I grew up (what seems like an absolute age ago now). First three were in a small park then there was a mega-leg from one corner of the map to the other. I was pleased to get the scenic route through the Abbey, though there were quite a few strollers about. The bells had such a familiar ring. It was past a room I'd once rented to 6, then into the shopping streets, and hunt-the-garden-gate for 9, which I spiked. Things got more technical for 10 through 13, and I'm not sure about a couple of route choices. I definitely dropped half minutes at 13 and 15 by missing little alleys and over-simplifying. Biggest mistake was 20, though, where I headed off down a blind route. 1-0 to the planner there. 22 was a complex puzzle, which I think I solved ok, but I missed the optimum 'tricky' route to 25 (although I had no idea it existed till I sat down with the map much later). Felt fittish, but achey, and thought I ran hard in the circumstances. But result was only top third. I'll have to look at splits to see why I'm losing time, when I thought I was mostly ok. Very stiff afterwards too.

Trail race race (Steep Down Challenge) 35:22 [5] 8.0 km (4:25 / km) +160m 4:01 / km
rhr:54 weight:71kg

I love this race. And felt so much better than last week. Though still not quite tip-top. Legs felt a bit slow. Just got into a rhythm on the climb and let a few go by, but not many. Was breathing real hard and well and loving the dried earth surface for running round the top field. There wasn't really any overtaking after the trig point, and Steve had already got a sizeable lead, which if anything he increased. He had a minute on me at the end, but that was him running a blinder I reckon rather than me being much below par. Hopefully this was a comfortable 9 points.

Walk (Alfold) 2:30:00 [2] 9.0 km (16:40 / km)

Post-run walk from Alfold along the Wey-South path through Sidney Wood, the summit level of the canal. Got to make the most of this weather. Legs feeling fine but lack of climb appreciated.

Road run race (Oxford Half Marathon) 1:34:48 [5] 13.1 mi (7:14 / mi)
(sick)

Slept very badly on Friday thanks to coughing, then had a dozy lie-in till 9.30 which did me a power of good. Saturday night was better after I stopped the coughing with huge quantities of water. I’d be ok to take part and thought I could run with Lucy, but I was struggling with her 1hr 30 pace inside the first mile (7 mins) and decided just to keep it easy. Felt alright till about 3 miles but thereafter went downhill and fought to maintain pace, so was surprised to manage 7 min miling through Marston village. Slowed after we passed halfway and reached the Parks at 10 miles in 71 mins, but by now was really feeling it. The rest was grim, just endurance. I got overtaken by so many people and at one point thought I might actually have to walk. But hung on to 7 min 45 miling and just ground it out to cross the line inside 95 mins, which I’d given myself as a sort of target to keep me trying. In the circumstances, I was reasonably pleased with the pace to 8 miles, and the collapse thereafter was to be expected. Even so, enjoyed the occasion and conditions and was delighted that Lu surpassed all her targets.

Slept badly again, with a cold, but cycled anyway. Didn't feel too bad but was coughing all day. One day to recover?

Orienteering race (Rewell Wood level C) 1:20:21 [4] *** 8.6 km (9:21 / km) +125m 8:43 / km
spiked:19/26c rhr:54 weight:71kg

Orienteering at last. And I knew there'd be brambles and brashings so didn't even mind them much. Felt a bit shaky running in terrain and on rougher paths but that may be legs or eyes - don't know. Pushed as much as I could but only felt fast-ish when overtaking slower competitors. Did a lot of that, and navigated pretty competently, but result was ordinary. Lost 30 secs on one control in quarry, then struggled with the hill to 7. Found the wrong thicket at 10 and couldn't believe there'd be another one - there was. Tended to be careful over deadwood here and in green stuff and found myself happily walking quite a lot. Picked it up near the top of the hill where the running was better, then went straight (and therefore slow) through the longer legs 23 and 24. On the whole I feel my effort went into the navigation rather than the running so I should be pleased that that, on the whole, went well.

Warm down (Control collecting) 1:00:00 [2] 5.5 km (10:55 / km) +75m 10:13 / km

Jog/walked to get the eight furthest from assembly. They're so easy to find when you're going slow.
