This was the reason we came and I was really looking forward to it, even though I was a bit tired after the rigours of yesterday. Hung back a little from the frantic dash at the start, and when I entered the trees people were swarming away in every direction. It was a case of looking up for your route then following the right group. Map reading was tricky as it was dark, there were lots of control circles close together, and they clashed a bit with all the squiggly contours. But my 1, 2, 3 and 4 came up just fine and I was just about managing to juggle the navigation and running. The next leg was a bit longer and I did it mostly on the compass, desperately trying to make the contours fit the numerous small hills. It was always such a relief to check the right code and not become one of the many people who unfolded their maps then groaned when they realised they were in the wrong place. Most of the younger runners on my gaffle had got away by the road crossing but I was still in touch with a sort of group. There were more mistakes made in the next bit and we started to spread out. I underestimated the distance to 11, the spur, and lost a bit here, but was still pretty good back over the bridge. But on the path to 15 I neglected the map and ignored the huge reentrant to my right so when I got to the corner of the field I realised I had passed a control at the top of the hill and had to run all the way back up. Three costly minutes lost. The last section was much quieter and I was navigating mostly alone (and not very well), but all the flags came up and I was puffing up the field to the finish. Mine was one of the slowest times on a very fast first leg, but I'd kept in touch and Nick got us up from 31 to 14 and Neil ran a storming last leg for 6th, which was alright. If I hadn't rushed 15 we'd have been fourth. Massively enjoyable event on an unpromising area which turned out to be brilliant.
