Orienteering is such a rare treat these days, especially so close to home. Path to 1, straight to 2, paths to 3, 4 and 5, though missed my AP for 5 and had to relocate on a big tree. Straight for 6, path for 7, then path for 8, which might have been a bit cautious, but it was a knoll in the middle of overgrown open with very lo-visibility. Paths (mostly) to 9, then track for the 1km-plus run in (!) although the path to the left might have been better and would certainly would been more interesting. Not a vintage challenge, but very enjoyable all the same. Turned left ankle again going to 3 but it seems ok.

I seem to have 'lost control' of my weight. Since I went on holiday. I need to get it back. Wasn't helped today, either, by the right heel coming off my shoe, even after I'd stuck it back with bicycle repair kit rubber solution. Started easily but upped the workload so time was ok. I'd have struggled to go quicker though.

Too nice a day not to. With Jan and Champers from Springhead Hill to Barpham Hill, then Wepham, Burpham, South and North Stoke, Amberley, and SDW to finish. Good mix of farmland, woodland, riverside and Downs, and a nice pint at the George.

Recced the other 'half' of the Three Forts with Lu. Parked under Steep Down then ran via Coombes and Botolphs to Truleigh hill, stopping occasionally to wait for Lu. Then out and back to Devils Dyke Road, after which point the early troublesome headwind was behind us. Ran the return quite hard so legs were a bit jelly-like by the time we crossed back over the Adur. Tailwind helped on the long slog up Annington, and was fresh enough at the top to run a lap which enabled me to complete the entire route recce. Felt pretty good throughout and really enjoyed it again. No niggles and the running almost everywhere good. I don't feel as if I've actually 'trained' for the event in two weeks time, but I hope I've done enough to give me a) a taste of how hard it will be, and b) the confidence that I can do it justice.

Lacked confidence going through the terrain after I fell a couple of times and went down hard, so stuck to rides as much as was sensible. Was too far right for 3 and overshot then found wrong tree at 4 so almost 2 mins down already. Peter caught me at 5 and was away by 7, but I was alright for a while and led to 13. Then twisted my left ankle badly jumping from a fallen tree trunk near the control and was hobbling for a bit. He got away but lost time near 15 and I was in touch again. But here the combination of ankle, more trips, and general lack of orienteering appetite got the better of me and I stopped by the wrong stream for 16 and lost 2 more minutes. I was in the wrong block for 18 (rushing, sloppy bearing) and then slightly disheartened by the longer legs towards the end and fatigue and distraction led me to the wrong earthwall at 23 and the wrong ditch at 24. Missing drive and careless nav probably cost me 5-6 mins in total and quite a few places. Lovely sunny day though.
