Cycling (Felpham and back) 1:05:00 [3] 22.0 km (2:57 / km)

Got soaked by this weird wet stuff coming from the sky in the morning ...
6 PM

Road run (Summersdale and South St) 31:41 [5] 8.0 km (3:58 / km)

Spur of the moment decision after I wasn't so long at the shops. Felt a bit better and was able to push on in second half (hip wasn't hurting), but time was slow-ish given the effort.

Orienteering race (Holmbury Hill) 1:22:21 [4] 7.8 km (10:33 / km) +260m 9:03 / km
spiked:9/18c weight:71kg

Eight people managed to run 10 minute kilometres or quicker. I think that says it all. 'Courses planned to avoid to worst of the bracken and brashings ...'? I don't think so. This was horrible. I reckon I became disheartened ploughing through the bracken on the way to 6, and looking ahead I could see there was going to be much much more of the same. I started to feel tired (from yesterday?), then demotivated when I realised I was going to be more than an hour, and then angry and fed up when 10 min ks started to look impossible. I was 200 metres out on 2 but got myself sorted, then orienteered pretty steadily (never felt fast) to 11. Found an unmapped path going to 12 and was lucky to relocate, but couldn't find the minor path down the hill into the village (!) and ended up in a jungle of bracken and brambles. Gave up in fury at this point and can see from splits that I lost 3 to 4 mins here. Battled holly and more grot on the horrible contouring leg to 15, then somehow got running again (where I could, i.e. on paths) through last three controls, though I'd long since stopped caring about the result. Saw Jan on way to 18 and she said she was thinking of giving up and I said I already had. So was a bit surprised at download to be told I was third!! Obviously I wasn't the only one who'd struggled with the rather thoughtless planning and controlling. Still hated it.

Orienteering race (Knowlands SOG) 39:59 [4] *** 6.0 km (6:40 / km)
spiked:19/22c weight:71kg

Really enjoyable run on a nice little area. Good look at the map beforehand suggested sticking to paths was best, and this I mostly did. Where I think I lost time was in trying to run too fast and so not planning ahead a bit. I practically stopped at most controls to work out a) where I was on the map and b) where I was meant to be going next. Main thing, though, was my left hip was fine throughout and after, and right hip was only a tiny bit sore. Threw away a second place finish by losing a minute at 6 (after going to 9 instead!), and 30 secs each at 12 (came out onto a junction and went down the wrong path) and 17 (tried to go through brambles when there was a perfectly suitable path). Hello new O season.

Orienteering race (Guildford City Race) 55:53 [4] *** 6.4 km (8:44 / km)
spiked:20/29c

Enjoyed this much more than last time, although result was distinctly ordinary. Thought the course was really well planned and thoughtfully avoided the busiest shopping areas, which was the main problem last time. Hip niggled by the end but I thought I was running well. Time losses were almost all due to eyesight failings and were all small, but they added up in that frustrating way that orienteering mistakes do. Missed the route over the second bridge on the way to 4 and ran on to bridge 3 and back, then left 4 the wrong way having missed underpass route. Faffed on way to 10 but seem to have got away with it, probably due to uphill running speed, but did the same for 11 and lost time. Panicked a little bit as we entered the tricky castle area but was mostly OK. Couldn't visualise the tree at 14 and, after getting lucky with 16 on the other side of the hedge, opted not to go down the steps and under and straight to 17. Thought I'd seen a route through the estate on the long easy leg to 25 in the university, but it was a cul-de-sac and I had to retreat. Probably binned about 4 mins in total so I was never going to trouble the leaders. Fun though.

OK, not sunny. But at least warm.

Note
(sick)

Bad cold. First since March 2013. Will miss a few sunny cycles to work, which is a shame.

Walk (Wey & Arun Canal) 7:00:00 [3] 32.0 km (13:08 / km)

Lovely day on second half of Wey-South Path with Lu and Jan. Loxwood, Newbridge, Stopham and across Wildbrooks to Amberley. Tired in second half, but hips and blisters just OK. Mild head cold was much worse by the evening though. Really pleased to get this in successfully before the end of the summer.

Walk (Wey & Arun Canal) 5:30:00 [3] 26.0 km (12:42 / km)

Brisk walk along the Wey-South Path from Guildford through Bramley, Rowly and Sidney Wood to Loxwood. Troublesome left hip was fine, but right hip became tired. Also, ended up with a blister on my right foot, probably because I was wearing boots while walking fast.

Road run (Summersdale and South St) 31:00 [5] 8.0 km (3:53 / km)
weight:70kg

Felt so good I had to go for a run. Then, but for the hip, felt great. Time was quick, but I wanted to go faster. Only there was no way the left hip was letting me have any of that. This must be due to being back down to 11 stones finally.

weight:71kg

Similar time and effort to last week. Hip twinged a bit when I started, but it was nowhere near as sore from halfway. Unless I'm just getting used to it? Bit frustrating, as the rest of me (weight, heart, lungs) all seem to be working so well.

Trail race (Fittleworth 5 Junior Race) 6:35 [5] 1.5 km (4:23 / km)

Reluctantly gave Chi parkrun and F5 a miss because hip needs rest. Anyway, had been asked to lead junior race at Fittleworth. So jogged round course one more time then made sure I gave myself a good 50 metre-plus head start for the junior race as a couple of the youngsters looked tasty. Managed to stay ahead - just - though checking behind to see they could actually see me slowed me down quite a lot. Was limping and quite sore after, so I'm glad I did no more, though I was tempted to enter the main race.

Road run (Summersdale and South St) 31:26 [5] 8.0 km (3:56 / km)
weight:71kg

Weight is off, and I tried to run strong, but back of left hip was sore and tight from halfway. It must be the driving. Time was OK, I suppose, but I had to work really hard for it. And there was no pleasure in the effort, that's the worst.
