Orienteering race (SN Trophy Hindhead) 1:16:07 [4] *** 6.9 km (11:02 / km) +330m 8:54 / km
spiked:12/19c

Slightly bu****ed up no. 1, missing by about 20 metres then faffing and finding other flags, and that cost me, not so much my motivation, but my confidence. I started people-watching, which is always fatal. Was relieved to hit 2, then found the marsh on the way to 3. Chris caught me here and we were together to 4, but I thought he was leftwards on the slope so stayed right and found a hole but not the right one. Lost another minute near 6 (people-watching), but was OK to 7, though passed by Nick here. Was just careless near 8, misreading clearings, and dropped 2.5 mins and wasted energy. Tried to calm down on second long leg, which was OK, then was OK through 10 to 13 and almost caught Nick again. Lost, say, 1.5 mins on tricky leg to 16, but had v. good route to 17. Then blew 1 or 2 more mins in the brambles near 18 because I didn't trust myself with route choice. So probably just over 10 mins of mistakes, and, what with all the walking, thought I'd had a disaster. But result was alright, which I don't understand? Got passed easily by Chris and Nick (grrrr), but they did end up with first and second places. Wore new lenses and noticed I could read numbers on control descriptions much more easily, hooray. Didn't really like the course, though, and climb was right at upper limit of guidelines.

Orienteering race (Eartham North SOG) 47:02 [4] *** 6.0 km (7:50 / km) +165m 6:53 / km
spiked:15/17c

The raindrops, the raindrops ... Not promising at the start. Pouring rain, brambles and shouty scouts all over, but I had a bit of a blinder. Spiking 2, I started overtaking moderately good runners and so, determined to open the gap behind me, tried really hard to hit the feature cleanly, get in and out, and not give position of control away. And by and large I managed it. I overshot 5 and lost about 1.5 mins and dithered near 12 but otherwise felt I was orienteering well. The brambles were unpleasant - probably even worse than Selhurst - but just not bad enough to mess up bearings, and some bits of the forest, round 10 and 15, were brilliant. Left quickly because of the rain and scouts, and no results yet, but I'd be surprised if that isn't a decent run.

Orienteering race (Chawton Forest Park) 1:16:06 [4] *** 8.9 km (8:33 / km) +215m 7:38 / km
spiked:18/23c

Encapsulated what is fun and frustrating about orienteering. Some lovely forest just made for running through, but a lot of control sites in point features that were impossible to hit cleanly at any sort of speed. It was quite possible to have a good strong run then lose ages because you missed a pit or small depression by a few yards. The map and planning were great, but the mapping of the control symbol is a lot bigger than the physical feature itself and in slightly broken ground finding a flag is a matter of chance. So I fluffed 7, 8, 14 and 20 and lost about 4 mins even though I knew exactly where I was. Grrrr. Lost 2 more more mins at 20 mostly through rushing. Overall really enjoyed the event though and appreciated the sunshine, although the going was proper wet underfoot. Back was v. bad in the morning but no problem running, and I felt no fatigue at all from yesterday. Huh?

Orienteering race (Sheffield Forest SOG) 58:01 [4] *** 5.2 km (11:09 / km) +180m 9:31 / km
spiked:14/17c

Oh dear! Reckon I did 14 out of the 17 legs really well, but on two longer ones I made route choice mistakes (minute each) and on number 6 I got completely lost (9 mins-plus). It didn't help that as I got near where I thought the control was a load of people started asking me if was looking for 117. I was and they said they couldn't find it. I said it's over there but it wasn't and I became an honorary bumbler. I'd messed up my bearing out of 5 and got two stream junctions about 120 metres apart confused, and run off the map. Took me ages to realise because the two streams were so similar. Anyway, race over and focus and concentration all gone. Still enjoyed the rest of the course as it was thoughtfully planned and made good use of the area. Really need to check my compass more often, although in my defence it was hard to run on a bearing even in the white forest. Also back was twinging in the morning so I didn't warm up or anything; think that may be due to over-eating last week. Will stop.

Orienteering race (Cowdray Forest) 1:24:40 [4] *** 8.8 km (9:37 / km) +300m 8:13 / km
spiked:16/21c

Had been watching old Munro Shows on Youtube and recalling happy days, so decided to run this just like a hill-day, just for enjoyment. What this seemed to mean in practice was slowing right down in terrain to avoid falling over, sticks in eyes, etc. although I pushed pretty hard on rides. And this shows in spilts. When I cut across, either because you had no choice or I thought it would be quicker, I was slower (but the white forest wasn't really RUNnable). On a couple of longer forays through the trees and undergrowth my bearings were woeful and I probably wasted two of my three mins of small mistakes having to relocate. Ground was really wet and muddy, but forest was good and weather was lovely, so overall enjoyed the morning even if result wasn't brill.

Orienteering race (November Classic, Ocknell) 22:56 [4] * 3.9 km (5:53 / km) +75m 5:22 / km
spiked:11/12c

November Classic cancelled because of flooding and swollen streams. Massive shame because I was really in the mood and well prepared, and the sun was just starting to get warm when I arrived at the car park, although it had been raining very hard most of the morning. Saw someone at a petrol station on the way home who said he'd done the blue course early and reported no real problems. This year just seems jinxed orienteering-wise. I'd been having doubts, but this morning this was all I wanted to do. Better get a refund, or a re-run. So ran the Wayfarers course, which was yellow standard and under water pretty well throughout. Fun though, and a reminder of what I was missing.

Orienteering (Selhurst Woods) 1:20:00 [3] 9.0 km (8:53 / km)

So took the opportunity to run round my xmas score event control sites. Won't need to change too much, but a few map updates necessary in view of spreading bramble menace. Some bits just lovely though. Felt fit and strong and ready for a race, which was good as I'd woken up with a bad back on Friday and Saturday.
