Orienteering race 1:14:58 [3] 6.4 km (11:43 / km) +300m 9:29 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 1

#1-2 by handrails.
#3 spot on with compass.
#4 There was a vague re-entrant with undergrowth in general direction to #4 which I went on rhs. Hit the green on map and crossed to LHS. Checked out a number of boulders/cluster and then decided to go further north/left and work out what was happening. Confused so decided to relocate on upper road, fortunately running into #4 on the way.
#5 was good, taking straight line through the short green strip from bend in road.
#6 I repeated mistake of Middle yesterday! After crossing the first road I started looking for re-entrant and green, thinking I was already in forest block of the CP. Realized my mistake and corrected, finding a nice wide re-entrant across the road and the CP as it should be (+1:57 mins).
#7 Angled up to top road to #7, using the bend in the north fork as AP, but went to far north to obvious visible boulders and messed around a bit before finding it further to south (+20s).
#8 My plan was to use rough open corridor as hand rail 20metres to my right but went too far past CP, turned back and went back along open edge to check out other boulders, missed flag again, turned, missed it again and finally found it going back on 4th attempt (+1:52). Was so pleased to find it that I punched, turned, and carried on in north west direction before realizing I should be going 90 deg east.
#9 Crossed the fynbos and decided to take the careful option of using the boulder cluster on other side edge of open corridor as AP (unnecessary).
#10 Followed ravine edge to road to #10, taking straight route after the junction. Drank water with Lindy, set off for #11, found I had no compass and turned back to pick it up (thanks Lindy for showing me where it was).
#12 Took careful route using first the track to open corridor, then the electricty pylon as AP.
#13 I only saw the northern road option and did not notice the possibility of saving height and using the higher roads. So decended down to road followed it along edge of forest to #13.
#14 Was misled by an obvious spur in the rough open fynbos. Messed around this way and that way trying to work out where the flag was at "foot of spur". Finally realized that the CP was not in open land but in white forest! Then found it easily (+2 mins).
#15 Took a line too far east. Found no erosion channed and realized In needed to go more west. Hit it and followed it up to flag (+30s).
#16 went well using a rough compass line and looking for the boulders and antheaps along the way.
#17 good.
#18 My rough compass line took me about 60 metres west of CP. I saw the big mound of earth and for some reason or other decided it was a "man-made earth feature" (brown cross on se side of CP) so carried on looking for flag further to north west of circle (fatique affecting brain?). (+1:19).
#19 ok

Orienteering race 44:06 [4] 4.3 km (10:15 / km) +90m 9:17 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 1

#1-3 Made a careful but slow start.
#4 Used the stream as hand rail, crossed the road and two mtb tracks but then headed for the wrong (northern) cliff feature. Wasted time looking for the flag there before relocating and going to correct feature (+1 min).
#5 Ran along the forest edge and found the control perfectly.
#6 Ran straight to hill, round the north side and found the control where I expected it to be.
#7 Took a straight route and found an easy way through the stream undergrowth.
#8 Used a compass line and hit it well.
#9 Used the boulder cluster next to the road as AP. Another good leg. Caught up with Richard.
#10 Decided to avoid the rough open and use the road and path along the north side, but when I got to it, the path was blocked by felled saplings so backtracked and went overland after all. No problem finding control, but lost about 50 secs and Richard got there first via straight route choice.
#11 A good one (2nd pos split), ran fast and accurately along roads and cutting across corners.
#12 A huge disaster. Overconfident from good previous leg and some distraction from another competitor, I ran on, making 90 deg error and losing contact with map. Went back towards previous control, worked out where I was and crossed the open corridor. Then thought I was already in the forest block where the control circle was, so tried to look for flag among those boulders while Richard went past. Got even more confused and went like headless chicken further south east across into next forest block but on south side of the stream. Finally looked carefully at my surrounding and relocated using the dam/rough open block, too road back to T junction and then easily found #12. (+7 mins)
#13-14 Ok
#15 Got a bit confused by the control description south-western-most ditch when I could only see one on the ground and on the map (now I see the first one marked with brown dots). So I overshot the control before working out that it was that channel so had to go back up to the control flag (+50s)
So about 10 minutes of errors which if avoided may have taken me close to Mike.
