Walking 3:00:00 [1]

First time in a long time that I can remember my feet being so sore. Besides all the walking, we waited in line for almost an hour to see the Anne Frank House. Worth the wait in the fading sunshine - it's an amazing and emotional story.
Instead of the Van Gogh and Rembrant museums we opted for the Rijksmuseum which had a good sample of both artists and lots more of Dutch history.
Finished the whole loop of hop on hop off boating around the city. Slow but very relaxing. Tomorrow we will pickup a few of the other attractions and maybe a bike ride in the country. Certainly not in the city where the kamakazzi cyclists live up to their reputation. Don't trust the cars either.

Walking 3:00:00 [1]

Long walk with Mumsey around Amsterdam before disembarking the cruise. Then another long walk from the hotel getting to know the south end of the city towards the museums. Enjoyed viewing the traffic on the many canals crossing the city. Will use them tomorrow to get around.

Walking 6:00:00 [1]

Enough walking today in Cologne to call it training. Lots of sightseeing interrupted by shopping and a bit of the church service in the cathedral.
Finally, after 30 years I found the boiled pigs knuckles that I used to enjoy in the German tavern in Montreal in days gone by. With hot mustard and sour crout and mashed potatoes.
Here they serve the beer in very small, tall glasses so it is always fresh. It was really good and at a refreshing temperature but not too cold. The waiters bring the small glasses of beer by the dozen in special trays. The tradition is to chug the first one by the time he puts down the second round. A cool idea but we sipped our first one like champagne. Yum.
Snoozy time now back at the boat.

Walking 2:30:00 [3]

Lots of walking through castles, parks, and shopping districts in and around Koblenz. Lots of eating, drinking, and sitting on busses and bars too.
I will go for a long hard walk tomorrow morning before the ship departs. I will!

Note

Lots of walking but I can't call it training. Guided tour of Strasbourg amid thousands of other tourists and school kids. ABC - another bloody cathedral but it was huge. The Notre Dame, 100 years to be completed and the highest structure in Christendom at the time. 16th century I think.
Then we went on a wine tour and walked around another town that starts with an O. Very nice wine though. Three cheers for Alsatian wine. Smooth and aromatic and low in tannins.
I will see what kind of headache I have in the morning.

Walking 2:00:00 [1]

Rhine river cruise. Nice walk up and around the castle at Breisach. Bus tour of the Black Forest area (St. Peter) in the morning. Eating has slowed down a bit but it will be hard to keep all the weight off!

Walking 2:30:00 [1]

Walking around Basel before the cruise starts. Followed a prescribed route for the modern Art festival. Very weird stuff on display. Didn't pay to go into the main exhibits just walked back to the hotel.

Cycling 1:35:00 [2]

Nice ride down to the Ottawa river and along the western parkway. Checked a few connectors for the new cycle map of the west end.

Mapping 2:00:00 [1]

Mapping with Jennie in Kemptville. Ate at a local pub and now I feel awful, sleepy with a headache. MSG poisoning??

Cycling 1:30:00 [1]

Great ride with Mumsey down to the Ottawa river and over to the new connector along the O-train right-of-way. Stopped to watch the cycle races on Preston and of course ordered a gelato while in little Italy.

Cycling 1:10:00 [2]

Good spin to Bytown locks along the canal. Had a nice weather break from all the rain so I just had to get out. Lots of people watching near the NAC where there was a big grad ceremony. All the body parts felt good. This has been the best hip injection recovery period so far.

Walking 54:00 [1]

Nice walk around Revelstoke except for the dog attack on Quenel. Same 3 dogs that run loose and have pestered me before. Shouting at the owners makes no difference as they simply ignore me and call their little darlings back into the house.
This time I was able to line up the big poodle with a solid kick as he charged me. When I yelled at the other dogs to bugger off the owner came out and shepherd her mutts back into the house. No comment, no apology, total disregard for anyone's safety or discomfort. Wish I had my cell phone with me I would have called the bylaw cops on the spot.

Mapping 3:20:00 [1]

working on some thick left-over areas on the far side of the hydro line. Not a whole lotta fun but glad I re-checked some other areas on the way over where I found a couple of little rock faces and bits of fencing that I taped.
Now I can concentrate on the old map which is a lot more accessible.
If it's dry I can mountain bike around a lot of the trails.

Cycling 1:05:00 [1]

Easy ride with Mumsey down to the Ottawa along the canal. Hip feels much better than after the previous injection. The cortisone must have helped. Now time to get back into a good exercise routine.

Thursday Jun 5, 2014 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [2]

A one hour down the Rideau bike path and back through the sub-divisions and Carleton U. Threatened to rain but stayed dry all the way. Good stretch afterwards.

Orienteering race 57:00 [2]

Very sloppy score-O in nice but slippery terrain in Kanata. It was dark in the woods but that should not be an excuse. Poor planning and poor bearings. Have to get my head into "racing" again. I move so slowly I should not make big mistakes.

Monday Jun 2, 2014 #

Cycling 1:03:00 [2]

Fast split to downtown with the wind at may back but paid for it on the way back. 30.5C - it was nice to be in a "breeze". People watching not so good as on a week-end. Can't believe they will have the new stadium ready for the July 1 home opener. They still haven't finished the structural part of the new south side stands!

Orienteering race 1:11:00 [3]

Very sloppy race in the greenbelt on an otherwise beautiful day. Lots of mental errors, probably due to poor conditioning and lack of practice.
Ah well, at least my legs didn't cramp up like last Sunday.
