Orienteering race (O-Ringen foot O Day 5) 53:27 [5] 7.1 km (7:32 / km) +180m 6:41 / km
shoes: Asics Gel Fuji Trabuco 2

Last day of O-Ringen. 2-day Men's course, chasing starts. Österlen arena near Maglehem, far south of Kristianstad. My running speed was still terribly slow, but nav was good. Really tried to concentrate on maintaining map contact. Only messed up #7, with a 3 min mistake. Many thickets in the general area near 7, so that threw me off. Caught and passed the guy who started 2 places ahead of me, and managed to stay ahead of all the guys behind me. Very happy with the run. A good 1 min/km faster than yesterday. Nice run to end the week. 33rd overall out of 65 entrants on the 2-day men's course. Overall a fantastic week and a great experience! Well worth it.

shoes: Asics Gel Fuji Trabuco 2

2-day Men's course. Sölvesborg arena, same forests as yesterday's MTBO. Took the bus to the arena, "rest" day off the bikes. Ran on some of the same paths I had biked on 3 times yesterday... At least I knew what to expect! Running speed was no-where. Very slow to #1 and 2, and on the long uphill legs. Nav was ok, but too slow with picking routes through the technical rocky/ contoured areas. Also, not running straight enough. Enjoyed it far more than Tuesday's run. Should have run 55 minutes. Great vibe at the arena!

Mountain Bike race (O-Ringen MTBO Day 3) 1:57:06 [5] 37.9 km (19.4 kph) +700m
shoes: GT Zaskar 29er 2013

Best race of the week, even though I DQ'ed due to a miss punch on the penultimate control. Stupid!! Chasing starts. Sölvesborg forests. Started in 40th place, 54 seconds behind Nic. Caught Nic at #2, then we took completely different routes on the long leg to 3. Got to 3 before Nic and managed to stay ahead. Again, 3 butterfly loops on the M21 course, so any following in MTBO is non-existent! Butterfly loops meant we rode the same tracks 3 times over, In some cases. Bit boring, but that's how it was! At least they put the common control on a big road this time. Had good speed and made solid route choices all the way. Legs were feeling good. Then disaster - somehow with 3 controls to go (2 of which were quite close to one another), I just completely missed #25. Only realized when I crossed the line and downloaded my SI card. Stupid rookie mistake! Turns out 20 people on the M21 miss punched on the day at various places, including a few of the top guys. Very disappointed, but at least I had a good ride up to that point. Enjoyed the fact that there was lots of climbing. Would have placed 30th on the day. Winner did 1:40, so only 18% off winning time as opposed to 34% on the World Cup Long. Improvement.

Mountain Bike 2:20:00 [3] 46.7 km (20.0 kph)

Back to Norra Åsum via Kristianstad and a swim in the sea.

Orienteering race (O-Ringen foot O Day 3) 50:16 [5] 4.8 km (10:28 / km) +45m 10:00 / km
shoes: Vivobarefoot Neo Trail

Entered on the day for the "Open 8" course (middle distance, difficult control locations). Non-competitive course. Sand dune forests on the Baltic coast. The less said about my run the better. First run since GOC Champs on 16 June. Horrible. 4 min mistake at 17 and 3 min mistake at the penultimate control. Lack of running in the last 2 months showed. Soft sand dunes didn't help the cause either! Not the greatest first foray into European forests. A run to forget.
10 AM

Mountain Bike 15:00 [3] 3.1 km (12.4 kph)
shoes: GT Zaskar 29er 2013

Ride from Friseboda foot-O arena to MTBO arena in Furuboda.
1 PM

Mountain Bike race (O-Ringen MTBO Day 2) 30:37 [5] 9.25 km (18.1 kph) +50m
shoes: GT Zaskar 29er 2013

Sprint distance at Furuboda. Horrible race! Tried the SI card on my left hand for a change, so I could slam on back breaks with my right hand at controls. Did not work out at all! Was fumbling and falling over almost every control. My head was just not in the game today. Many poor route choices and overshot paths far too often. Struggled again in some dense track networks. Placed 50th in the end.

12 PM

Mountain Bike race (O-Ringen MTBO Day 1) 47:22 [5] 18.4 km (23.3 kph) +20m
shoes: GT Zaskar 29er 2013

Middle distance just north of Åhus. Easily 500 riders over all classes for the O-Ringen MTBO. Good race, except a 2 min mistake at #4 (took wrong path) and then I crashed twice, between #9&10 (on a tar bike path. Ja.) and again just before #13 (hit a tree stump in the grass). Comparing splits with Nic, it was amazing how much time I actually lost with those crashes. Happy with the ride for the most part, but was still struggling with making quick route choice decisions. Turns out I had a few non-optimal choices here and there. Placed 39th out of 84, but could have been within top 25 if I stayed on my bike!
4 PM

Mountain Bike 32:00 [3] 12.3 km (23.1 kph)

Mountain Bike race (MTBO World Cup Long ) 2:10:23 [5] 45.4 km (20.9 kph) +175m
shoes: GT Zaskar 29er 2013

Long distance at Skepparslov Golf course, west of Norra Åsum. We were buoyed by our result from yesterday, and long distance riding is our thing. We were looking forward to it! Pretty flat terrain for a long distance. I completely messed up #2, which put me on the back foot immediately. Didn't find an indistinct path link I was looking for. Overshot and messed around. Butterfly loops which made things interesting. Found a good rhythm in the second half, but could not match the high intensity of most of the rest of the field. Riders still flying past me like I'm looking for parking. Too many route hesitations and a number of terrible route choices. I slow down and check my map way too often, not trusting my first decision. Many routes were into the control and back out again on the same path. Not sure I like that very much, I am far more a fan of a course which takes you through a control and out the other side. Also, the common control (used 3 times for the butterfly loops) was put on a narrow singletrack. Bike traffic along that path in both directions was ridiculous. They could have moved the common control 200m away and onto a wide dirt road, and limited all that 2-way bike traffic on a singletrack. Go figure?! Heard about some nasty head-on bike accidents today. 2 guys ended up in hospital. Unfortunately placed lower than the sprint. It seems I can hold the race intensity for 30mins on a sprint, but not for 2 hours. Top guys hold that intensity all the time! Crazy! 66th of out 80 starters. 34% behind winning time (97 minute winning time)

Mountain Bike race (MTBO World Cup Sprint) 28:57 [5] 9.7 km (20.1 kph) +15m
shoes: GT Zaskar 29er 2013

Sprint distance on the western edge of Kristianstad and between the university buildings. Interesting concept - ride wherever you like (orange, yellow, white), except in the olive and dark green. Basically became a foot-O sprint on bikes... Had a fairly good ride for the most part, but the intensity was ridiculous! Both Nic and I very surprised by our placing in the end, as sprinting isn't our thing at all! Placed 51st out of 76. Super fun actually!
2 PM

Mountain Bike 1:10:00 [3] 24.0 km (20.6 kph)
