Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km) +40m 6:15 / km
shoes: O-Icebug - Blk Spirit II OLX 2

Decent warm-up, though in pieces, walking kids toward their start, and actually 10 sec. late to my start given my over-parenting...

And a slow but several minute cooldown after a long finish chute battle with Nik (that I lost) left my hamstrings tweaky.

Orienteering race 41:22 intensity: (10:00 @3) + (30:00 @4) + (1:22 @5) 5.5 km (7:31 / km) +200m 6:22 / km
shoes: O-Icebug - Blk Spirit II OLX 2

US Champs Middle Distance - again 6th US.

Nik Duca caught me early (2 min) but I hadn't fully realized he was on my course, so didn't use him as we went back forth after that.

Overall, I'm again a bit disappointed with my speed vs. the leaders - even after Nik caught me...

Best and worst

#12 - 89.2 - To road, along road, and stayed on a bit longer than most, judging distance from paved road to cut up at a bit sharper than 45 degree angle - nice straight shot in, knowing I couldn't miss it given the field behind it. Was slowly passing some reasonably fast older guy as some incentive apparently.

#8 - 87.4 - Contouring out, and realizing I needed to climb up the spur, and the various traffic in the area - incl. Nik just ahead at that point, helped confirm.

#18 - 86.3 - Took the spur-on-line down - good gentle use of climb - and recognized the need to bank right at the trail junction before cutting out cleanly to the field. Trying (successfully) to hold off Nik (right behind me) on this one.

... now the worst....

#4 - 62.5 - Drifted a bit right around vegetation, and, post-creek was looking wide left/right and saw it way below me. Given the vagueness of the terrain en-route, should've either followed the bearing better, or better tracked how far right of bearing I'd gone, such that I could correct after the creek.

#6 - 65.2 - Contoured/dropped a bit, seeing creek bend and thinking I was on track to firmly relocate at #2 - which I didn't see - and then the attempt to drift/climb toward never spotted the ponds, eventually, slowly, correcting left/up enough - much more than expected to a eventual spur. Should've better held to bearing on way out - contouring out w/drift downhill was quite wasteful and set up a low/confused traverse. On the line, the first stream bends, followed by the steep edge above 2 would've kept me on track.

Running warm up/down 7:00 [2] 1.0 km (7:00 / km) +50m 5:36 / km
shoes: O-Icebug - Blk Spirit II OLX 2

Up the road to the start, then a bit of looping around.

No cooldown.

Orienteering race 1:48:54 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (48:54 @4) 14.0 km (7:47 / km) +550m 6:30 / km
shoes: O-Icebug - Blk Spirit II OLX 2

US Champs, M21, 6th US.

A bit disappointed at how slow I am compared to the field. It's not way behind my past-10-year average, but the surge of the last few years seems to be falling off. I'm perhaps doing too much Ingress running, rather than focused training? Not worthy intervals? Not sure...

I think I may also be more hesitant in the forest than in the past?

Map reading seemed okay - though took effort to study hard on the run - so I'm interested in getting a vision check.

Looking at best two splits:
#3 86.8 - I had planned ahead on the climb to #2, and simplified the route to rough-compass bail toward the pointing part of plateau edge, then drop, also w/rough compass check. Executed fearlessly (of nav. errors.)

#5 85.2 - Also had simplified based on the steep hill edge bends, and even noted the odd big reentrant in the spur partway as a clear double-check. Also caught glimpses of someone fast up ahead (turned out to be John Campbell) who I pushed to catch up to.

Looking at worst two splits:
#21 60.8 - I was dragging a bit by the end, but wtf - Angelica beat me in the chute. I think there was some sloppy epunching involved, but that's no excuse...

#12 64.3 - Went out low and had no clear attack, misinterpreting and checking many lumps and bumps along the way. Should've picked clearer attack points en-route, e.g. climbing to the marsh/hill-edge, and bottom of rocks.

#20 65.6 - Apparently seriously out of gas by the end - the bail and run were okay - with only some limited nav. hesitation along the road. Should've had more than 1 GU on hand, and also adjusted by eating a bit more than normal - perhaps 4-oatmeal packets, instead of 2 + a waffle... - and/or 3 plus a banana 2 hours before the start - given the 4 hours between breakfast and start...

Trying out a local cross-country for kids thing that meets at Arch, with AJ. He's the oldest, but not the fastest. Not sure when we'll get back there - tho maybe we'll do a Sat. AM Belmont Plateau thing in 2 weeks?
