Going to try and sneak in a little at Mansfield Hollow before work. Then Strider Annual Party on the way home from work.
7 AM

Run - Trail 37:32 intensity: (41 @0) + (1:44 @1) + (5:18 @2) + (15:57 @3) + (12:14 @4) + (1:38 @5) 4.65 km (8:04 / km) +57m 7:36 / km

Windy, overcast. Easy jaunt with Scott, Ken, Nan, Cindi and a few others. Started a bit late and turned around to make it back for 8am meetup. But I had to shuffle off to work instead. But got out there...

Note

I've enjoyed reading various end of year recaps and reflections in everyone's logs and realized I've been hanging out in this space consistently for almost 20 years now. I've developed a lot of solid friendships in this community.

Which got me thinking back 20 years and how, around this time I began to have some strange throat discomfort when running hard - sort of an acid refluxy kind of thing, but only when running hard... very strange. Continued to have these symptoms through the winter of 2000 until finally being diagnosed with a 95% blockage of the left anterior descending artery on the front of my heart (aka "the widow maker"). That could have ended very badly...

Had an angioplasty and a stent placement in early April of 2000 then was totally off the trails until mid-May or so, which is where my Attackpoint career picks up. And what the hell, lets just go straight from the couch to a half marathon while we're at it. I never claimed to be the sharpest marble in the bag....

Been trying to stay ahead of the reaper ever since (successfully it would appear) and intend to keep on doing so for at least the next 20 years. Hopefully Ken (Thanks Ken!!) keeps this place going for us for another 20...

Big things on the horizon in 2020 me thinks. It now appears that much of the fatigue and muscle aches I've attributed to post-lyme issues may actually be due to the statins I've been taking for 20 years. I've been participating in a UConn study the past 5 months which seems to point to the statins as being the cause of a lot of this. Been feeling pretty good of late and am assuming by the way I feel that I'm currently in a placebo phase. Final round of testing in the study is tomorrow morning.

Hoping to get back to regularly running A-meets this year and perhaps get out and do a little field work on some local mapping projects that have been languishing in the background for too long. And I think I'd really like to make one last appearance at a WRC so going to see what I can do to make it to California in August..

See you all in the woods... Happy New Year!!

Run - Road warm up/down 20:00 [3] 3.0 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: Bondi 5 2018

Left watch at home on charger by mistake. So times are just an estimate...

Run - Road race 22:02 intensity: (1:00 @3) + (4:00 @4) + (17:02 @5) 5.0 km (4:24 / km) +25m 4:18 / km
shoes: Bondi 5 2018

40ish, misty rain, roads clear with a few puddles. No watch, so complete guess on time for now. Felt tired, but pushed as hard as seemed reasonable, but not 100% all out. Another week down, 8 to go. Maybe we'll see SteveR before all is said and done..

20th of 105, 4th of 14 M50-59

And after 3 weeks I'm currently in 6th place in the overall standings, 2nd M40+ and a consistent, but not huge margin back of Robert Hewes M53 in 5th place.

3 PM

Walking 1:06:36 intensity: (37:24 @0) + (28:58 @1) + (14 @2) 5.97 km (11:10 / km) +27m 10:55 / km
ahr:92 max:118

And a walk with Ellen before and into the dim... Dirt road is pretty muddy right now.

Walking 19:54 intensity: (19:48 @0) + (6 @1) 1.89 km (10:32 / km) +26m 9:52 / km
ahr:85 max:96

Weather looking increasingly dubious for today, so elected to take the 'long way' from the garage to the greenhouse. Quite nice to walk in the pre-dawn on a deserted campus in January..
10 AM

Walking 28:47 intensity: (19:28 @0) + (8:05 @1) + (1:14 @2) 3.97 km (7:15 / km) +60m 6:44 / km
ahr:84 max:122

Walk to the hardware store for some electrical bits. Installing 20 new HAF fans which were supposed to come pre-wired. And didn't. Time to put on my electrician hat... Forgot to stop the watch when I got there, so subtracted the 19 minutes or so spent diddling around there.

10th Day of Papaya - Coyote Run w/ Silk City Striders. Was trying to keep it around 140bpm, but obviously drifted up a bit. But a nice time... Then Pizza at Wooster St, came in halfway through Bar Rated Trivia - did pretty good seeing as how we only did 2 of 5 rounds. Won us a 5-pack of Ramen. Woot!!

9th Day of Papaya - Fat Ass at Valley Falls. Only 4 loops for me, plus a short bit to make it past 10 miles. Sloppy, but fun. Then off to Gardner to fetch another load of Hayden's belongings...

8th Day of Papaya. Family Hike to Lookout Mountain in hopes of a sunset. Was not to be, but a great bunch of folks, goodies and a nice walk in the woods at Case. Then back down in the dim, but never used the lights. With Ellen & Anna (and a whole lot more).
