I've enjoyed reading various end of year recaps and reflections in everyone's logs and realized I've been hanging out in this space consistently for almost 20 years now. I've developed a lot of solid friendships in this community.
Which got me thinking back 20 years and how, around this time I began to have some strange throat discomfort when running hard - sort of an acid refluxy kind of thing, but only when running hard... very strange. Continued to have these symptoms through the winter of 2000 until finally being diagnosed with a 95% blockage of the left anterior descending artery on the front of my heart (aka "the widow maker"). That could have ended very badly...
Had an angioplasty and a stent placement in early April of 2000 then was totally off the trails until mid-May or so, which is where my Attackpoint career picks up. And what the hell, lets just go
straight from the couch to a half marathon while we're at it. I never claimed to be the sharpest marble in the bag....
Been trying to stay ahead of the reaper ever since (successfully it would appear) and intend to keep on doing so for at least the next 20 years. Hopefully Ken (Thanks Ken!!) keeps this place going for us for another 20...
Big things on the horizon in 2020 me thinks. It now appears that much of the fatigue and muscle aches I've attributed to post-lyme issues may actually be due to the statins I've been taking for 20 years. I've been participating in a UConn study the past 5 months which seems to point to the statins as being the cause of a lot of this. Been feeling pretty good of late and am assuming by the way I feel that I'm currently in a placebo phase. Final round of testing in the study is tomorrow morning.
Hoping to get back to regularly running A-meets this year and perhaps get out and do a little field work on some local mapping projects that have been languishing in the background for too long. And I think I'd really like to make one last appearance at a WRC so going to see what I can do to make it to California in August..
See you all in the woods... Happy New Year!!
