Orienteering (Blue Hills Traverse #48) 3:15:09 intensity: (4:41 @0) + (4:58 @1) + (46:30 @2) + (1:28:42 @3) + (41:52 @4) + (8:26 @5) 19.08 km (10:14 / km) +512m 9:01 / km

Cold, wet rain. Ran in rain jacket and separate hat with wool hoodie as base layer. With a crowd for the first couple, but it soon became apparent that I wasn't going to be able to make out much of the terrain or features when offtrail in the woods. And really wasn't looking forward to a solo slog in these condtions. In fact, the only feature I could make out reliably was JJ's shirt, so after the 3rd control I decided I'd just try to stick with him for the course. I was reading the map fine and could decipher trails and major features as we were passing them, but trying to route find on contours or distant features was impossible for me. And the thought of trying to do this course on direct bearings wasn't an option.

Kept a pace that was moderate enough to stay warmish (never really warm, but never dangerously cold until we stopped at the end). And it was nice to have company on such a depressingly dismal day.

And then packed 5 people into the truck for the trek back to fetch vehicles. Wouldn't want to travel very far like that, but no major complaints. JJ suggested riding in the camper, but with the battery removed for winter, it would have been pitch black in there and definitely not as warm as the cab.

Glad I went, but gladder that its done... Snow on the way home once I hit the CT line, about an inch of wet slop on the ground in Stafford and at home in Tolland.

Get it out of the way early. Rest up for tomorrow, which looks like it could be a serious slog.

Walk down the street with Anna. In to work early (as usual), but also have to do some spraying later after 4pm, so decided to take the bright part of the day off for a change.. Maybe I'll even sneak a run in...

50F, sunny. Just a short jaunt, legs didn't feel like anything more. Been a long while since I've just done the out and back on dirt road.
