5 AM

Note

Short-handed at work again, so skipped the AM run. Don't think its detrimental to the fitness, but still a lot to do before we leave, so tomorrow looks unlikely as well. And then on the road... Maybe a run at Devil's Claw on Saturday AM if the travel goes well...

6 AM

Run - Trail 53:30 [4] 6.61 mi (8:06 / mi) +54m 7:54 / mi
shoes: Conquest 2014

Low 70's, residual showers from overnight storms. Very humid & thick. Legs felt good from the beginning, but realized my pace was a bit faster than I wanted so backed it down to 8min/mi or so. Drenched & tired at the end...

Sunday Jul 27, 2014 #

7 AM

Run - Mixed 48:20 [2] 4.74 mi (10:12 / mi) +174m 9:09 / mi
shoes: Conquest 2014

Run with Rogaine pack up to Soapstone where I did timing for todays Soapstone Assault race. Road up the hill was a bit of a slog, but felt smooth & strong once on the trails. Elected not to run home as it was pouring & I had the timing stuff in my pack. Didn't want timing sheets to become illegible...

Run - Road 32:50 [3] 3.74 mi (8:47 / mi) +54m 8:24 / mi

Run - Trail 34:35 [5] 4.97 mi (6:58 / mi) +44m 6:46 / mi
shoes: Conquest 2014

Goal was to push hard, see if I could go under 36 minutes. Hurt like hell to push that hard, but well under 35!

Run - Trail 27:26 [3] 3.13 mi (8:46 / mi) +19m 8:36 / mi
shoes: Conquest 2014

Forgot the liner shorts, and chafing ensued within the first mile, so cut it to 5k, rather than 5m. Didn't push pace today

6 AM

Run - Trail 36:09 [4] 4.99 mi (7:15 / mi) +43m 7:03 / mi
shoes: Conquest 2014

Same route, little bit faster....

{edit} apparently faster than I've ever run it...

Run - Trail 38:47 [3] 5.03 mi (7:43 / mi) +44m 7:30 / mi
shoes: Bondi B

Easy 5 before work. Bondi's are blowing out on both sides which sucks because I was planning on wearing these for WRC in less than a month. I really don't want to buy a new pair of shoes right now...

Home... Left Cimmaron, NM at 7:30am MDT yesterday and after a long bus ride, long airport wait, flight delays and a medical emergency on the plane during deplaning at BDL finally got into the terminal and claimed baggage at 2:30am EDT. Will inevitably be some napping going down today. Will backfill the log as time permits.

But all in all, excellent rogaine training....

Hiking 7:00:00 [3] 11.18 mi (37:34 / mi) +700m 31:27 / mi

Up at 12:45am, broke camp & hit trail by 2am. Up to Schaeffers Pass and then summit of Schaeffers Peak. Hung out for a few hours and watched the nearly full moon set in the west, then daybreak over the plains to the east. Then in down Tooth Ridge to the Tooth of Time where I waited at the base with packs to avoid having to waste time pulling out smellables and hanging bear bags. Boys did the rock scramble up and back in 45 minutes. Mileage includes that, even though I didn't do it myself. Then began the long, switch backed power march down Tooth Ridge and back into Philmont Basecamp at 10:30am. Called in pizza delivery for lunch. Quickly consumed...

Hiking 3:30:00 [3] 7.13 mi (29:27 / mi)

Short day. Up through Hidden Valley to Window Rock, down to Hunting Lodge and out to Clark's Fork. Dry camp this evening so another lunch/dinner flip so we could conserve water as its dry all the way out to Base Camp tomorrow. Then up to Upper Clark's Fork camp for an early bedtime.

Wednesday Jul 9, 2014 #

Hiking 5:00:00 [3] 10.75 mi (27:54 / mi)

Harlan around Deer Mesa and up to Ute Gulch commissary for food pickup, then over to Cimmaroncito staff camp for some rock climbing & rappelling in the afternoon, and bouldering in the evening. Active nuisance bear in area so extra bear precautions. And showers....

Tuesday Jul 8, 2014 #

Hiking 5:00:00 [3] 11.88 mi (25:16 / mi)

Blackjack to Harlan via Bear Canyon, Cimmaron River & Visto Grande camps. Another good walking day arriving at Harlan @ 11:30, surprising the rangers there as most arrivals from Blackjack apparently stumbled in around 4 or 5, usually via the equal distance but hotter Turkey Canyon route.

Shotgun reloading, skeet shooting & burro racing were the order of the day since we were in early.

Monday Jul 7, 2014 #

Hiking 4:30:00 [3] 9.5 mi (28:25 / mi)

Recovery day. Maxwell back up to Head of Dean (sans burro) where boys elected to stop to rest & play games (basketball & badminton). Then left at 10:30 headed down Dean Canyon. Got pretty warm by the time we got to New Dean so we found a good tree to hang under for a few hours. Had a water source so we elected to cook dinner early and eat lunch later since our evening camp was likely to be dry. Then around 4:30 headed up towards Blackjack for the night.

Got to Blackjack to find a very new rainwater collection tank that was 3/4 full - probably 300 gallons. Except the wizard that installed it put the spigot level with the top of the tank and, being a gravity feed system, nothing came out. Not having a handy pipe wrench nor a convenient siphon it wound up being a dry camp after all...

Hiking 11:00:00 [3] 17.52 mi (37:40 / mi) +1250m 30:50 / mi

Baldy day. Out of camp at 5:15am without crew gear, up to Miranda, then up past Black Horse camp & Black Horse Mine to summit Mt Baldy 12,410' from the south. Summit cone steep loose rock and very hard work. Beautiful conditions on top. Then down the NE side (some vertigo) and then a nice 1+ mile walk on alpine tundra. Then down to Copper Park, skirted the north end of French Henry stopping by the Aztec Ponil mine and a longish route around spur to Baldytown for our 2nd commissary pickup. Then back to Maxwell via Miranda. A long, but satisfying day.

Saturday Jul 5, 2014 #

Hiking 4:30:00 [3] 8.5 mi (31:46 / mi)

2nd day with burro. Early start, up trail from Pueblano to Head of Dean, then down to Miranda staff camp to drop off burro. Then up Miranda Meadow to the camp proper. Tomahawk throwing in the rain, then out to the black powder range. Back up to Miranda then off to our trail camp at Maxwell

Friday Jul 4, 2014 #

Hiking 3:30:00 [3] 7.72 mi (27:12 / mi)

Back down to Ponil to pick up our Burro as well as a commissary stop to pick up the next couple days of food. Stubborn beast, liked to kick so we made sure no boys were in the immediate area of the back of the animal. Mostly an up canyon dirt road walk to Pueblano. Started to rain shortly after penning the burro up, so no spar pole climbing at the camp. But a nice spot to chill out for the afternoon with a nice evening program - started out in an outdoor ampitheater area, but rain quickly forced us back to finish the show on a very cramped cabin porch...

Thursday Jul 3, 2014 #

Hiking 5:30:00 [3] 11.17 mi (29:33 / mi)

Horse Canyon to Dan Beard Staff Camp. Early start, gorgeous & clear on the ridges. Down into Dan Beard for the boys to do a 2 hour challenge course starting at 7:30am. Then out of camp by 10am after watering up for a down canyon walk to Sioux Trail Camp. Had to bite my tongue (advisor role only) when our day's navigator (and his co-navigator) took a wrong turn up the trail to Wilson Mesa - got about a half mile up the hill before they realized it wasn't going where they wanted to be going...

Still managed to get into Sioux Trail Camp early, so set up camp, had lunch and headed a mile down the trail to Ponil Staff Camp where the boys did cattle roping & branding. We brought our dinner and cooked down there so we could stick around for the cantina show later in the evening. Also took advantage of hot showers ('cuz we could). And then trekked back to Sioux Camp in the dark, but mostly on dirt road so pretty easy to navigate.

Wednesday Jul 2, 2014 #

Hiking 5:00:00 [3] 9.48 mi (31:39 / mi)

Anasazi Camp to Indian Writings. 3 hour conservation project (trail building), atalatl throwing and a nice 1 mile walking tour of the petroglyphs in the canyon. Then after lunch up into the hills to Hart's Peak, then across the ridgeline to Horse Canyon Trail Camp. Thankful for another mostly overcast day as the 2002 North Ponil Fire has left most of this part of the ranch pretty well treeless... Pretty, but no protection from the heat...

Tuesday Jul 1, 2014 #

Hiking 1:15:00 [3] 2.28 mi (32:54 / mi)

Short hike in from Six Mile Gate to Anasazi Camp, lower part of North Ponil Canyon, not much elevation today. Thankful for overcast skies, it would be brutal if clear & sunny out. Boys are planning on hitting the trail real early to beat the afternoon heat most days on this trip, but first day logistics leaves us hitting the trail in the afternoon today...
