Run - Mixed (Lake & back) 51:37 [3] 10.5 km (4:55 / km) +85m 4:43 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

A real live run!!! woohoo!!

sunny & high 40's, so snuck out for a midafternoon jaunt between cleaning the house and guests coming for dinner later on. Down the dirt road, then over to the lake. Since the lake is so low, I jumped the bank and ran just above the waterline which was about 60' from 'shore' for the most part. Mostly firm, but a few shoe sucking areas. Returned via the dirt road (closed for winter) which was mostly slushy or icy - take your choice. A couple brief fast, long stride bursts on the road as I approached home. Glad to get out...

AOWN - a close encounter with a docile Ruffed Grouse in full ruffness...

Note

I note that I'm neck in neck with PG for weekly training volume - in other words nada, zilch, zero - nothing even approaching useful training since the Marathon. Though to be fair, I'm not nursing any injuries. Just not finding the time. Kind of makes Barbs Total Lethargy training look like a speed workout.

Thought about running the Scrooge Scramble 5K in Rockville tomorrow AM - weather looks just fine, its close by and a bunch of friends run it every year. But squeezing a run in between xmas morning with the kids and afternoon/evening with the rest of Ellen's family isn't sounding too plausible. Oh well - too bad... Maybe its time to suck it up and get the bike on the trainer and start putting in some time down in the basement (cold & boring...)

Merry Christmas to anyone who happens to stumble through my log..... (and everyone else too...)

Orienteering race (Valley Forge Marathon) 6:00:36 [3] *** 47.5 km (7:35 / km) +750m 7:02 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Great race by Wyatt Riley & crew. Went out with the 7am crew and ran with JJ the whole way. No errors and moved along at pretty good pace most of the time, walked a bit more on the 2nd half so the 2nd half was perhaps 25 minutes longer than the first. A bit cold off and on, but the terrain was nice and runnable all around. I only have the SI splits, JJ took full splits so I'll just copy his when he posts...

Note

As usual, JJ has written a thorough postmortem of our exploits, including pointing out my mistakes... So I'll just defer to his recollection of the day.

Orienteering (Five Ponds) 2:22:00 [1] *** 13.9 km (10:13 / km) +525m 8:36 / km
shoes: Salomon TR2

Setting out controls for Sundays Five Ponds event which I can't attend as I have to work. But Peter injured his ankle a couple weeks ago and asked for some assistance and I was off today anyhow so off to Litchfield I went.

Just wore street clothes as I didn't intend to run at all but did wind up jogging a bit from time to time. Trails have a bit of icy glaze on them, but the woods were fine. Rustled up a few white tails, but otherwise the woods were quiet.

Started snowing around 2pm, I finished up at 3 and hit the road. Secondarys were slippery so I opted to take Rt 8 to I84 which turned out to be a bad idea as it took me over 3.5 hours to get home. Highways weren't so bad, but the idiots were out in force as there were spun out cars all over the place.

Note: Pace is actually slower as the time is 'moving time' from the GPS - and I spent a bit of time standing still - tying flags up and just ensuring that all the visible features matched up correctly and that I was indeed putting the flags in the correct locations. Never hurts to double check these things. I was probably in the woods for 3.5 hours or so.

Orienteering race (Blue Hills Traverse) 2:17:18 [4] *** 13.8 km (9:57 / km)
shoes: Salomon TR2

Traverse on a very cold day. A clean run - dry leaves on rocks were very slippery so in many (most) areas the running was pretty cautious, but didn't take any major headers. Saw various folks on and off but pretty much ran my own run the entire way, didn't make any serious errors but did manage to pick some creative routes on a few legs. Got into a bunch with Jeff Shapiro, Phil, Tim Parsons and a few others on the last few legs off the hill, but didn't make any attempts to try and get ahead and/or away. Content to let a small crowd finish just ahead of me.
