Note

Muscles, leg in particular, are quite fatigued this AM. Not really sore, though they did get well punctured by brambles yesterday, but just totally drained. I guess that's what happens when you try to run 3 sprints on a base of zilch.... I guess I should start running some....

Run - Trail warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

3 easy jogs to the start

Orienteering race (Bennet Sprint A) 19:15 [4] 2.4 km (8:01 / km) +50m 7:16 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

First sprint, messed up one control for about 20sec, rest was pretty clean but certainly wasn't running too fast. Overdressed on the first one, shed some clothes afterwards. Nice map, great weather for January. Felt good to get out in the woods, I think this is the first O I've done since CNYO in September other than mapping.

Orienteering race (Bennet Sprint B) 22:08 [4] 2.4 km (9:13 / km) +50m 8:21 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

Second sprint - time from memory. Couple good errors - #3 - crossed road and focused on looking for contour knoll rather than wall/boulder - Rick mentioned that side of road was 'rough' and the contours got me - wound up past control at larger boulder before turning around.. Also bobbled #5 came down hill looking for the large boulder and all I saw were a number of equally sized ones checked a couple bogus sites before seeing the flag. But apparently Peter did the same thing.. Still slow....

Orienteering race (Bennet Sprint C) 21:55 [4] 2.4 km (9:08 / km) +50m 8:16 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

Ran straight to #1, green wasn't so bad, then headed down to dirt road and picked up the pace while readjusting map. In doing so I lined myself up for #3 and blazed right on by #2 and probably went 1/3 of the way toward #3 before realizing my error - backtrack. Cost a good 2 minutes. Rest of run was error free - helped by the fact that I'd been to a number of these controls previously - but slow - had to fast walk up the hill the last couple controls - just didn't have the stamina to run them even though there was essentially no navigation to worry about on the final couple controls.

Bike - Recumbent (Gulf & back) 32:00 [3] 11.3 km (2:50 / km) +180m 2:37 / km
shoes: Slipstream

Another quickie ride before dark. More ice and wet dirt. Went further this time, explored a short dirt road I'd never been down and went up to Gulf Road, then turned around and came home. Although it wasn't really dark, I would feel better with some lighting on the bike to be seen.

Still getting used to having 9 speeds in back (versus the 6 on the other bikes). Going to have to practice spinning on hills - I found cadence slowing down substantially on most grades - no problem mashing my way up, but I'd rather be spinning rather than mashing..

Bike - Recumbent (East Porter) 25:00 [3] 11.5 km (2:10 / km) +185m 2:01 / km
(sick) shoes: Slipstream

Squeezed a short ride in before dark. Icy patches in places and quite a bit of wet sand still on the road. Down to Grahaber, then up Webster to East Porter and return. Caught the shoelaces on the chainring a couple times - have to find a solution to that. Also need to move the steering tie rod in slightly. Other than that the bike rode very nicely, though the engine needs quite a bit of work at this point.

I guess this means my training for the PMC has begun...

Note
(sick)

Well this sucks... had the new bike a week now and still haven't gotten it on the road. Have an old wind trainer and some other misc parts lying around - I'll have to see if I can't rig up something to at least ride in the basement until I can get it outside. But between work (on another 12 day stretch now), kids activities in the evenings & such - getting the bike on the road before February doesn't look likely..

And a pretty good chest cold has settled in too so I'm not terribly excited about the prospect of late night and damn cold explorations in the dark right now...

Bike - Recumbent 10:00 [0] 0.75 km (13:20 / km)
shoes: Slipstream

Decided to put the bike in the basement so I could get the car in the garage (didn't want to scrape it in AM). Rode up the back and missed the cellar stairs - wound up tooling around the backyard for 10 minutes or so. Seat need to go back a bit, brakes loose, rear deraileur slipped a couple times. But I suppose this counts as a maiden voyage. We'll get it tuned up and on the road soon but classes are back in session so daylight hours right now are generally spent at the greenhouses... :-(

Run - Road (Shafran & back) 1:02:34 [2] 7.0 km (8:56 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

late afternoon, 35F, raining (not just drizzle, but depressing dark gray rain)

Its days like these that having a training partner really helps get one out the door. So when I got home from work and it was obvious the boys had been housebound just a little too long for sanity - out the door Jackson & I went. Actually quite an enjoyable run and rather brisk pace (for an 8 year old) on the return. Water company to Shafran over to the parking lot on Eaton and then back with a couple extra mileage loops on the way back. Probably the last mile or so back to Brown's bridge Jackson was running at a pace that was average conversational for me, so for him it was really trucking along - bashing through wet laurel, through the streams and quite impressive until a face plant back on the old trolley line slowed him down - but only a couple hundred meters back to the road where we jogged home at a leisurely pace...

Hiking (Weigold) 30:00 [0]
shoes: Kumasi GTX

Had to kill some time before picking Anna up, so the boys and I did the blue loop at Weigold. Nice little area that looks like it connects directly over to the Joshua Tract land off Noah Lane - but I guess JHen has indicated this was the case before, I just didn't realize it was actually connected with marked trails...

Run - Road (Hare & Back) 43:50 [2] 5.0 km (8:46 / km)
shoes: Kumasi GTX

Another evening 5km run with Jackson after some fine pizza 'sumption. Probably explains Jacksons complaints of 'side stitches' and the need to take a short walking break every 1500m or so....

Adding 'Run w/ Jackson' as a separate category since we seem to be doing these more regularly now.

Bike - Road (Trip to Mall) 1:57:00 [3] 45.0 km (2:36 / km)
shoes: Cannondale ST1000

Needed to take care of some things over at the mall, so rode the bike - nice day, quads a little sore on climbs but generally felt pretty good.

Saturday Jan 6, 2007 #

Run - Trail (Sampler) 33:29 [3] 6.1 km (5:29 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

Warm & rainy morning - smallish crowd at the forest but set out with Ken, Kevin & Dave - Ken & I pulled ahead after the pond, but Ken left me behind on woodchuck - so I opted to call it a day with just the sampler rather than continuing on to do the rest of the figure 8 solo. Nice run, if not terribly exciting timewise - be we were running pretty leisurely on the dirt road prior to the beaver pond.

Hiking (McCann Farm) 2:00:00 [1] 5.0 km (24:00 / km)
shoes: Kumasi GTX

Nice afternoon hike with the family..

Fieldwork (Crandalls) 1:30:00 [1]
rhr:46 slept:8.0

Continued mapping top of the hill including west side of old dam site. Rode the Mtn Bike in from Old Post rather than climbing the hill - nice bit of terrain in there.

AOWN - when I first got into the woods, I rustled up a group of 3 deer, ran into them 3 more times while mapping, but the group kept getting larger by one each time. Quite odd...

Orienteering (Parker / Nye) 28:00 [3] 4.0 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

Ran across the road and did a mapless (but w/ compass) scouting of the Nye parcel and town land down toward Parker. This will make a fine 2nd stage addition to the Crandalls map - its all one big hill, but has some nice rock features, interesting knolls etc down low and I came across one Pawtuckaway worthy boulder - probably 5m or so.... Then back up the hill and over to Crandalls to retrieve my bike

Bike - MTN (Crandalls via Mtn Spring) 35:00 [3] 10.0 km (3:30 / km)

Took the Mtn Bike to get over to Crandalls to map. Rode into woods a way off Old Post, locked it to a tree and went to work...

Bike - MTN (Crandalls > Home via Bald) 27:00 [3] 8.0 km (3:23 / km)

Down Old Post, across Tolland Green, over Bald Hill and home... Less than a half hour on the bike and my butt hurts...

Tuesday Jan 2, 2007 #

Run - Road (Water Co Trail) 46:47 [1] 4.0 km (11:42 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Trail XI

another evening run - this time with Jackson (8) and Anna (10). Nearly a full moon, clear and crisp. Jogged on the road, but running quickly degenerated to a combination jog / fast walk due to various ailments from Anna. Still a nice night to be out after dark...
