Run - Treadmill (Treadmill) 29:48 [4] 4.83 km (6:10 / km)

6:15 - rolling hills program - 3%-10% grade. Why is it that even though the treadmill can go to negative 5% grade, that a 'rolling' hills workout only goes uphill??

Other (mapping) 4:22:00 [1]

10am - cooler, slightly overcast. More of the same - lots of bike trails, vegetation and new rock. Found what I believe to be J-J's missing boulder.

0.36 sq km (3.30)

Saturday Apr 20, 2002 #

Other (mapping) 3:50:00 [1]

9:00am - overcast, much cooler. Filled in some gaps on west side of board #3, worked across top and down trail on east side. Then across bottom and out of woods for lunch.

Other (mapping) 1:26:00 [1]

1:30pm - back in the woods after lunch. About 2.5 hours needed to finish hole in center of board. Unfortunately showers moved in forcing me out of the woods. Will need 45-60 minutes to finish this board.

0.69 sq km for both sessions today. (2.94)

Orienteering (short fartlek) 7:56 [5] 2.0 km (3:58 / km)

When it started to rain, I opted to run hard back to car - not because of the rain, but for the little bit of training it would allow me. Rather than run trail the whole way back, I ran about 50% trail and 50% through the bush enroute to the car. Lots of little hills but since I just mapped it, I pretty much knew the straight line - plus my map board at 1:7500 was pretty easy reading...

1:00pm - very hot again - working in the southeast corner of the map. Mikell said I would not be terribly impressed by the last couple hundred meters down there. I thought he meant it was boring terrain. In actuality it doesn't appear to have been extensively field checked. A lot of subtle, rocky reentrants on a slope that on the original map is quite bland. I am presuming Mikell ran out of time and did not spend much time down there. The large green marsh is pretty much large open water with few dead trees now - most definitely uncrossable.

0.20 sq km (2.25)

Run - Trail (Norwottuck) 8:03 [4] 2.0 km (4:02 / km)

Run back to car after mapping - too damn hot to run...

Other (mapping - The Notch) 3:28:00 [1]

HOT, HOT.... mapping a fairly complex area in the south central area today. Lots of new rock, a number of new bike trails... And a few really nasty laurel thickets (serious fight) in shorts.

0.30 sq km (2.05)

Tuesday Apr 16, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 2:08:00 [1]

Finished mapping the very sw corner of the park. Once again, quite a bit of new rock added to the map. Hot in the woods today, supposed to be worse tomorrow. Lucky I'm starting a new board tomorrow - I know a nice large area of hemlock forest so I can stay a little cooler..

0.31 sq km today (1.75)

Run - Trail (Notch) 13:25 [3] 1.5 km (8:57 / km)

easy trail run back to car after mapping...

Sunday Apr 14, 2002 #

Orienteering (Wolf Den Green) 47:41 [4] 5.0 km (9:32 / km)

12:30pm - honestly didn't look at course length - I am guessing about 5km.. Perhaps will enter splits later. Good run overall except blew #7 in a big way. Got overconfident and run just below the control and got well beyond because I wasn't paying attention. Time does not include copy time (~2:00)

Saturday Apr 13, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 4:18:00 [1]

10am - continue mapping just south of quarry area. Cleaned up yesterday's problem area nicely. The contour knolls were too close too the marsh. A good day in the woods.

0.56 sq km field checked today (1.64 to date)

Friday Apr 12, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 2:08:00 [1] 3.5 km (36:34 / km)

1:40pm - working north along the east side of the power lines. A lot of substantial unmapped rock, a few bike trails, one area sw of marsh where contours did not make any sense. Will retry that area from a different angle to see if it looks better tomorrow. Definitely a slower day in the woods.. Jogged to/from mapping area thus the 3.5km.

0.14 sq km

Thursday Apr 11, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 3:08:00 [1]

12:30pm - more mapping in sw corner of map.

0.36 sq km field checked.

Wednesday Apr 10, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 3:38:00 [1]

12:00 - mapping in sw corner of park. A very good day, added a major new trail, quite a bit of rock.

0.48 sq km field checked today.

Sunday Apr 7, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 1:50:00 [1] 7.0 km (15:43 / km)

Mapping southern portion of the Notch. A LOT of new bike trails...

0.10 sq km mapped, but quite a few trails mapped extending into areas otherwise not field checked yet.

Saturday Apr 6, 2002 #

Other (Mapping) 3:30:00 [1] 20.0 km (10:30 / km)

8:00am - sunny, cool - Norwottuck Re-Con. Will start actual mapping tomorrow. Lots of new trails, contours pretty good. Vegetation updates all over.. Need to add quite a bit of rock detail.

Wednesday Apr 3, 2002 #

Run - Trail (Nipmuck - UConn <--> Rt 7) 2:27:32 [3] 23.0 km (6:25 / km)

9:00am - Ran out hard, got to Rt 74 at 1:00:39, 27 minutes slower on the return. Felt good to get out though...
