Orienteer 59:20 [3] 4.0 mi (14:50 / mi)
shoes: Icebug Spirit-L olx

MNOC Family Day-- I still can't convince my kids that orienteering is a great idea, but the rest of my family, in town from various parts of the globe... had no choice but to come along. Orienteering was the planned activity of the day.
Robin (sis) and I teamed up for the 60 minute Score-O. We were slowed down considerably due to the fact that her pants were not full length- stopped just below the knee.... and WOB may be the scratchiest terrain we have.
We hit the easier controls near the start, stopped to look at Julia's Baby Bird Exhibit, went along to the hill near the railroad track...
then debated (purely hypothetically) whether a tunnel underneath a railroad track might be considered "crossing" a railroad track. Robin is a journalist, so I trust her definition of "crossing" meaning it had to go OVER. Result: lots of itch weed which I had to trample down in front of Robin creating a somewhat passable path.
All in all we navigated okay, were fast enough on trail but very slow off trail and got 7 controls (though maybe not the best ones); and I was eying an eighth when our president said "You only have 13 minutes to get back". I looked at my map, figured he wasn't just messing w me, and we ran back with 40 seconds to spare.

My parents enjoyed watching and meeting people, Ty liked running around from control to control (he didn't even really need the map or compass...) and Robin was mad at me for letting her run through nettles without long pants - but she will do it again. I'm trying to get her to move back to MN.
Thanks for such a great event, it was so much fun to have more time to do multiple events, hang around. Tom... nice job and thanks to Kelly too. And Andrei. and?

Orienteer (Sprint WOB) 16:53 [3] 1.81 km (9:20 / km)

I probably should have had some carbs between the two events. I could barely make it to the first control, maxed out on breathing, legs, at a slowish pace. I felt this way for almost every control, no "joy" feelings, kept pushing through and probably a good training exercise to orienteer hard on an easy route while exhausted.

Note

No camping....
Wish we would have been able to stay for camping at WOB. Once my parents were settled back at my house, the energy had gone from Ty/Robin and I still "kind of" wanted to go, but not enough to energize the rest of the crew. I guess that's kind of what I expected; sorry to have missed the fun!

Roller Blade (Lakeland bike trail) 20:00 [3] 4.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

My daughter Taylor coaxed me into roller blading with her, it's been so long for me that she had to be very patient; but it slowly came back, some of the caution went away, was good fun.
Not too strenuous because I get afraid at a much slower pace then I get tired. We're planning Lake Elmo next week. A bit smoother I think.

Run (Coulee and W ASP) 1:14:24 [4] 7.64 mi (9:44 / mi) +274m 8:46 / mi
shoes: Asics2

Left Sheboygan before 7 AM so I could meet my parents at the airport in Minneapolis shortly after 1 PM. I only found out on Friday that they were coming... shortened the Kettle Morain experience a bit, but I expect I'll be back in a few weeks so it wasn't too horrible to have to leave.
(maprunner and disorienteer... I'm sure you got my note...but again, good fun and thanks for all the training help.)

It was nice to be on the road early with my coffee; and I love driving through Wisconsin. It may be the most beautiful area in the US that has more than country music on the radio stations.

Now I'm back at my busy house, with parents, kids and my nephew, and me there to cater to all of them (In all fairness, my kids are old enough now that they are a great help, although it's given a bit begrudgingly. I have a feeling I'll pay. Literally!)

SO.. after dinner I went for a run to get away. (Hey, I lasted over six hours with family!) I also felt I needed a run. This weekend was great, but no real strenuous exercises...... a few sore spots, some twists and strains... continuous exercise but slow and steady.

Today's run was hot and tiring and just what I needed today.... stopped a number of times "for Alice".

Orienteer (Cat's meow rerun) 3:04:23 [3] 5.35 mi (34:28 / mi) +217m 30:36 / mi
shoes: Icebug Spirit-L olx

Rerun at Cat's meow....Took a very long time but at least this time I finished. =)

On #1, was a bit off and took me a long time to relocate, through some heavy green. Mighta been nice if I could see, OR if there were people around the punch, but this is my punishment for finishing the course 18 months after the leaders.
#2, went right by it, then looped around. I sat on the ridge and decided "Hmph. I'm not having fun. I'm going to relax, and then I'm just going to RUN back to the start, and then go for a trail run. THAT will be fun. TOo much thinking. And I looked to see, "where am I so I can run home" and everything popped and I realized where I was and that the control was SO CLOSE. So I was back on track and hit 2.
3-4-5-6 GOOD and I am a GREAT ORIENTEER wooheee
7: Simplify.. run for the ridge! (NOT that part of the ridge)
8: Good
9: Hit the circle, didn't see the tape, looped around and got it the second time.
10: Good.
Rest: sloppy but I made it back. WHEW.

Orienteer 1:00:01 [3] 2.48 mi (24:10 / mi) +73m 22:08 / mi
shoes: Icebug Spirit-L olx

After a sandwich, ran part of the Day 2 Green.
I never ran this course, opting for the orange instead in 2009.
I ran controls 1-6(ish) then decided to come home, cause I was getting tired and unfun.
Went out for brats afterwards, since Sheboygan is "World Bratwurst Headquarters" or something like that. But nonetheless, no appetite for brats since i don't really even like them so much.
Harbor was nice, walking along with Maprunner and disorienteer on a straight, flat, easy route to the lighthhouse and back,
