Woc tour day 6 - montagne de lachet

I desperately wanted to finish the week with a totaly clean run, no big mistake.
started ok but missed the first by 80m relocated off another control and straight in. error at 3 too far south - the first section of this course was fast - the only fast running of the week and threw a lot of people then there was a lot of climb into a real intense area but with better vis than most other days = good, hard fun, concentration levels 150%. hanging in till 12 where it all went to pieces again, but for sure this time it was the map.
short leg of 150m up and down abit then cross a path, around a spur and into a re entrant and the control. should have been easy! but when I got to the path I could'nt make out any type of spur, climbed the hill in front of me anyway and looked into a couple of re-entrants on the other side...nothing, ok don't panic, I circled the hill then dropped back to the path to relocate. ran down the path to a junction and tried from a different angle.
This should be easy! still can't make out the spur, look in the same re entrants, nothing ok now I'm getting pissed and starting to swear. This place is making me look stupid!!!
Go back to the path try again over the hill in to a re-entrant, nothing.
Losing heart I walk away in a different direction. Then there it is, in a nice bunch of green with a few people scrambling in to punch, I think about leaving it to them but then don't want it to beat me anymore.

I know I only missed it by about 10 meters the first time but I have just spent 12 minutes running around in ever decreasing circles!

The next 4 controls are nice but i finish knowing that the terrain has beat me this week.

I am not going to come this far and not orienteer, so tapped ankle (so much tape a could hardly move my foot!)
and proceeded to the start with M & H got about 2km with 8 mins untill my start and then realised I had dropped my SI card en route...
well what do you do? see you at the finish - I went back to the arena, orienteering hurts sometimes

Woc tour day 4 - foret de charvette

After yesterdays disaster things could not get any worse - they did!

I made my biggest mistake for about 6 years and I twisted my ankle, anyhope of a top 20 finish gone.

Longest day today and excellent course should have been great but between 3 and 4 noticed a french guy who must have been on my course.
He was about the same standard and we both messed each other up at 4 and 5 up the hill lost perhaps 5 or 6 mins on these 2 legs.
Then we seperated he was stronger climbing and I was glad to be alone, perhaps he would make errors without me and I could oncentrate more.
2 amazing controls around the monument that stands on the cliffs edge overlooking Chambery 1200m below, then drop down into the forest again
Twisted my ankle bad closing in on the 9th, It was serious. every slight twist over the pitted surface was agony, carried on pissed. Spotted my friend again going to the 10th - he had missed and dropped 2 mins. Then it happened, 450m leg down and across a green slope with lots of detail and no hope of relocation. I knew it would be dangerous but we still messed it up together. Game over but I wasn't going to quit today hobbled around the rest of the course clean and slow.

Pattern starting to emerge - orienteer ok in general except for one huge mistake? Not going to check anymore results

Woc tour Day 3 - Crolles (middle distance)

This is the day my Woc tour started to fall apart!

Did a stupid thing by checking the overall results before my race to see I was in the top 20 then seen the winning time so far - 44mins.

lost 1 min on route choice to the first - my brain wanted me to do a 180 but i resisted the temptation. slow to the difficult 5th and 6th but going well
glanced at watch after punching the 6th - 26 mins and maybe only 1.2km to go! hell, I could get a good result here! Thats when it all fell apart...
250m on a bearing to the 7th the ground was impossible to scramble over in straight line must have drifted. It was impossible to relocate, everything looked the same and the map was weird! (confirmed by Roar afterwards)

20mins later I switched off the garmin and trudged out a beaten man :-(

Woc tour day 2 - la grande teppe

Longer course today, real good course first section of 6 controls in a tough area this was not clean for me, I was navigating to the circle ok but messing up the last 100m or so when visibility (lack of) and intense ground detail confused me.
Lost 10 minutes on these 6 controls. Then came a nice open and semi open section with lots of climb that sapped energy but not too technical
(this was the only non-tech section of the whole week)
then a drop down to the finish through tough forest again.

Happy enough with this run but losing the 10 minutes early on was a pity.

went to look up results - around 20th again today if only I had yesterdays too - but wait, I am on yesterdays!! The SI card must have had enough room on it for the whole course :-)

Day 1 Woc tour - les gouilles

Started well, pretty clean, punched the 5th and had a gut feeling something was wrong - SHIT!! i forgot to clear my SI card :-(
ah well another days training.

The rest of the course flowed smoothly, I guess I had relaxed a bit knowing that I was just going for a wee run out.

pissed afterwards as I would have been 20th out of 150 or so.
