Walk out from Hope arm hut. Slept mostly ok except there was a mosquito in the hut buzzing from ear to ear. Even when I pulled the sleeping bag over my head it still seemed to only buzz right beside my ear.
Lashing rain then in the morning. Luckily it was warm enough but still pretty much everything was soaked. There were some fears about the timing as all of our GPS watches were dead and we started quickly. Realised we were very early and had to slow down. Boat man came in good time so no big wait. Quick change before coffee and I slept in the car while Gina (hero) drove us to Queenstown.

Motivated myself to get this session done. 4x 5min hills. Found a better hill than last week but still very tough. Felt decent mostly, as decent as one does for this session I guess. Saw the Dominos Pizza delivery guy going up the hill on his moped pretty much every time I was going down.

Up My. Titiroa. Nice variation all day. A little up and down in the forest on a path to start before a bit along the valley. No path here and we struggled a bit to find where we wanted to go, ending up beating through some super long grass. Found the stream eventually and then it was a really steep forested climb up to the rocky nose. After that it was open on grass for a bit before open loose rock the rest of the way to the top. Few technical bits, stepping around rocks and cliffs. Tough going and very intense sun, though not overly hot. We were the only people on the mountain which was nice. Good summit.

Back down. The loose rock/scree was good fun, although ones shoes did fairly fill up. Our line from the open to the rocky spur wasn't perfect and I had to climb a tree to work out where we were. Steep descent was slow and then bodies were tired going over the last bump.
Very welcome little swim in the lake afterwards and sprint back to the hut to avoid the sandflies. I snuck a bottle of beer each in my bag the first day and surprised the group with those which they appreciated greatly.

Got the boat across the river and then a nice flat walk into Hope Arm hut. Lovely evening. Threw some rocks in the lake and explored a little. The hut was fairly infested with sandflies and the toilet was mosquito heaven.

Over to Te Anau today for the start of some Fiordland exploring. Lots of travelling recently but will stay in this region a bit more for a bit now.
After spending a lot of the afternoon in the visitor centre making plans, then going shopping got out before the BBQ dinner and went along the lake. Spectacular views of the hills, even though it's somehow super flat. Huge wind too. Felt pretty tired really. On my map it had looked like there was a nice trail through the wetlands but it turned out to be sewerage works so it wasn't the best. Finished with a weird path through what seemed like an uncompleted park, with just this brick path through it. Nice overall though.

Surfing for the morning. Hard enough work but super fun. Stood up a few times.
Snuck in a sambo and a muesli bar before the long run. Along the seafront to a lookout. Windy but nice. Then a little loop inland and around a bay. Came back here later as I saw a spoonbill and some stilts. Flat back to the city centre before the hour mark, meaning the second half was pure climb. Boy did I suffer my way through some of that. Arms and shoulders fairly tired from paddling the surf board. Got 'er done though and had a nice lie down before going to see albatross, a kingfisher and penguins in the evening

Driving day. Having the camper car made getting out of Christchurch easy. Made it to Timaru for a stop (or Timolin as Gina kept calling it). Then got to Oamaru where we had a longer stop.
I did my training, 25min tempo, 5min jog recovery, 6x 1min hills. The warm up I started with Gina out towards the non-existant penguins but left her after a bit. Fairly serious hill but got the to top for the end of the warm up. (Lovely views up the coast)
Tempo was grand mostly. Rolling enough and had to work pretty hard but that's the goal right? Didn't really have the mental map sorted well and went the wrong way after the first loop. Turned it into an out and back which was grand.
6x 1 mins I found a more reasonable hill than Sunday. Felt good on these and really built into them. Enjoyable. Cool down by the sea then.

Followed up with a sandwich and a visit to Steampunk HQ with Gina, which was a bit of fun alright. Different alright and some interacting which is always nice. Finished the drive to Dunedin then.

Easy morning, washing etc. Rang around a few places and found the part for the car so went and got that in a super fun scrapyard where you just went and took whatever bit off the car you wanted. No more spare wheel issues yay.
Afternoon we touristed Christchurch a bit then back to the campsite.

I went for a run up to the Styx reserve. Felt heavy & slow at first but warmed up to it nicely. Reserve was good, saw some Paradise Shelducks and Shovellers which were new birds for me and had a lovely park run.
