SHI long on Merthyr Common.
I felt tired at the start missed one by about 5 seconds which didnt bother me and it was into the wind to 2. That was a bit of a struggle but I was staring to feel better y the time I got to 2. It was an esay control and I spiked it.
I drifted horribly on the way to number 3 but maybe it wasnt so bad? ended up at the right height after a while and came in to the circle from the u-shaped rocky area. I didnt really know my height, felt I was high saw some unmapped trees which didnt help and was looking out for the rocks just above the control but they werent there... faffed around looking for it then knowing i was somewhere in the re-entrant. dropped 2 mins.
on the way to 4 saw ben stevens and hot on his tail were colm and hugh all heading to 7. I stopped a little short but got it pretty fine. missed 5 then by about 30 seconds. didnt take my planned routechoice to 6 but i think it worked out ok
7 was an easy control really, maybe i should have gone straighter in the beginning though.
then it was 8 and into the rough stuff. I had been pushing hard and my brain was getting fuzzy and I started doing not what I meant to on the legs. went under the spur to 8, though I was at the end of the escarpment at 9 and didnt believe the rocks I saw on the ground at 10.
then i somehow had the fastest split to 11. I think I was running fast...
I was getting hazier and hazier then and stopped short for 12. 13 was fine and I took an energy gel when I left it. Then I died. struggled up the hill knew I was somewhere thought i was somewhere else and generally went slowly in not quite the wrong direction. just reached the end of my physical ability really.
managed to pick it back up a bit at the end when duncar archer went past me and did the last few at some reasonable speed.
overall I was happy enough with my speed but not my strength and I was running much harder than I normally do but my orienteering suffered as a result
