Had Saturday pencilled in for a running catch up with Greta. I arrived at the bach she and a bunch of tauranga multisport mates were staying at at 9.30 Friday evening to be met with "How bout Northern Circuit tomorrow?" To which I replied "sure, why not?"
And so we did an off-the-cuff mountain marathon haha.
Got dropped off at Mangatepopo by Anna, with no real plan of how we'd get home from Chateau once we finished. Had an absolute mint day for it. Bit breezy up and over the crossing, but overcast and a light wind for the most part. Perfect.
Went a reasonable pace, running the flats and downhills and walking any uphill that our momentum didn't get us all the way up. Stomach wasn't the happiest and i struggled to keep eating after 2hrs, but got enough on board early that it wasn't much of an issue. After 25km or so, we realised that neither Lisa nor I had run a full marathon before, so we decided to do the side trip to Tama lakes to get us up to 42km :) can't remember if we fully consulted Nicky on that decision, who had been on nights at the hospital til friday!
Ended up with about 6hrs of running plus plenty of breaks for photos and food. Headed over to Tussock tavern for a drink while figuring out a pick-up. Couldn't believe it when the bar lady ID-d us (first time in a while!). Fortunately we talked common sense in to her, as I didn't carry my ID around the mountain with me!
