NZ Champs Long - Scott's Ferry N

straight into it after a week off with a messed up knee (runners knee). Physio strapped up the knee, and told me not to do anything until the race, so had no idea how it would feel or react. Very happy to find that the tape did it's job and held the knee in place for the race. No pain at all! Apart from the aerobic pain of running hard of course...
Super soft sand made it a beast of a long distance. And a very well set course from Jamie and Bill, which had a nice variety of challenges throughout. I got tripped up by the visit to the light green at #2 and #3. Firstly I ran straight past #2 without seeing it. Like, within 10m of the flag... I went back to it collecting controls later, and the flag was perfectly hidden behind a fallen tree from both my entry and exit as I ran past.
Then made the classic mistake of running harder and concentrating less on the next control. Saved only by the fact I realised pretty early on that i'd lost contact and needed to get out to relocate. But I was enough off line that it took me a while to get out to the track to relocate!
From there it was into the fast but energy sapping white forest. A bit of a mare of a bearing on #5 dropped me more time, but was pretty smooth after that to be honest.
Did enough to come home with the win, but it was a game of catch up after those early mistakes.
