Running 23:22 intensity: (46 @0) + (7:16 @1) + (11:34 @2) + (3:46 @3) 2.44 km (9:34 / km) +89m 8:06 / km

mangahao dams - burn hut - college creek loop in the Tararua's with Mum. I would run 25-30mins each time, to a known land mark, then double back to find mum. Times don't include the doubling back, apart from in Part 3.

Part 2: From the Bush line along the tops to Burn hut. A classic reminder why the Tararuas are more for hiking than running. A muddy single track (atleast there was a track though), completely covered to above knee height with thick tussock. Very tough going, and hard to run as you can't see what's happening below knee height! Lots of stumps and mud to fall over/into. And yet, very beautiful :)

Running 1:13:35 intensity: (4:09 @0) + (33:44 @1) + (17:42 @2) + (18:00 @3) 5.72 km (12:52 / km) +222m 10:47 / km

Part 3: Burn hut - high point (then back to find mum). Down to college creek, then rock hop and wade down to the river junction.

Found a skeleton stuck in the mud. I think it was a deer that had been abandoned by hunters, rather than something truly killed by the mud. But a good reminder/joke about the dangers of Tararua mud ;)
Good day for a rock up down the stream, not too cold, not too much water. Managed to avoid getting stuck on top of cliffs when I opted for the terrace routes too. Just.

Running 41:20 intensity: (1:54 @0) + (6:13 @1) + (16:25 @2) + (16:48 @3) 5.54 km (7:27 / km) +99m 6:51 / km
ahr:141 max:156

Part 4: From the river junction out to dam #1 (worst mud yet, just after cleaning my shoes in the river too!). Then a long drag down the gravel road back to Dam #2 and the car. Then drove back to pick up Mum.

Running 45:00 [3] 5.0 km (9:00 / km) +500m 6:00 / km

Part 1: No GPS as battery was low, and probably would have been bad in the valley anyway. From Dam #2 along the valley/river to the new bridge (15mins) then a classic Tararua climb/scramble up the spur to the bushline.

Strength and Conditioning 20:00 [3]

First proper session. But actually, the back of an a380 has just enough space to do some strength. If noone is waiting for the toilet... Balance exercises can be challenging in turbulance

middle distance course from QB on Waikawa. In hindsight, it could have been a good test to run the world cup course - given i was 2 days off the plane, it would have been the same conditions the Swedes were in 4 years ago ;)

Anyhow, went well through to #12, although with all the wind, the dunes probably need remapping prior to every event here. Still good enough though. 12-13 was a nightmare - head high grass and lupin made it very hard going, and then i got to the top of a dune just to find myself boxed in by gorse! Then a thigh high marsh...yeah not quite the same as back in May when the grass was down and the tracks actually existed ;)
So training stopped at #12. Managed 13-14, but 15 to the finish has now been felled and left as a mess :(

Running 4:12 intensity: (1:41 @2) + (2:31 @3) 0.69 km (6:07 / km)

OUt to Catchpool with Tessa and the Granny-goat. Did the Butcher's track - cattle ridge - 5mile track loop. Butcher's track is as painful as I remember, stupidly steep and good stuff. Stretched out alone on the climb, but then looped and ran the rest at a rolig pace with Tessa, looping a couple of times for Mum to catch up.

Was harshly reminded about NZ grass and my hayfever. Spent an hour after the run in an intense mental battle with myself not to scratch the rashes and make anything worse. Off to stock up on antihistamines.

Running 24:41 [3] 2.53 km (9:47 / km) +167m 7:21 / km

Jogged around the tracks from home with M+G. Never get an accurate distance thanks to the steep gullies and tree cover. Legs felt happy to be out.

Actually got a map of the southern forest from the local club so went and ran an old training. Very very vague forest, haven't run in anything like it for a long time! Nice though - took a while to get used to the map, it was very hard to read up from down on it - which didn't help with the vagueness of the area! Was good with no tracks on the map.

Running 5:00 [3] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

Bonus km that I didn't start the watch for...
