Event: NOL Round 1

8 AM

Orienteering (NOL R1 relay) 28:00 [4]

First NOL race. a 2x2 sprint relay with Mace as my teammate.

Mace had a great first loop and sent me out in the lead alongside Jas. Didn't see her after the triangle though as we had different splits.
Took the whole first map to get back into sprint racing and maps. Cool area around the gardens, with some pretty significant climb, which my ITB did not appreciate much! Did the first course in 13.40ish - turned out to be the shorter course, as my second took 14.50ish! We were leading for the first two loops, but mistakes crept in as we both got tired.
In the end the mistakes were probably academic, as Rachel's 2nd loop was the same as my first, about 1.5mins shorter than my last loop - so I had no hope of catching her up!

Great fun, and very happy with 2nd behind Rachel and Anna.

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

WU, staying warm between, and WD. ITB was sore, sorer, and agony, in that order. Had to walk the WD as it was far too stiff.

Managed to avoid stepping on all the lizards!

Orienteering (NOL R1 qual) 17:00 [5]

Really cool campus for the indiv qual race. Some confusing areas where there were multiple levels but only one mapped, and everything else ignored. I managed to avoid these luckily, but others weren't so fortunate.
ITB was very painful warming up, but once map was in hand it went out of my mind. My head's just not in the right place this weekend though. For the first time in years I found myself at a control in a sprint race, without having even glanced at the next leg. So I lost over 30s on 2-3 as I got completely the wrong exit direction in my rush. My race got better as it went on though, which is a positive :)

Orienteering 10:00 [3]

Strength and Conditioning 20:00 [3]

stationary bike 45:00 [3]

Went to the gym with my sister in law. First spin class ever. I thought I was doing alright, until Rachel decided I wasn't pushing hard enough, and leant over to ramp up my gears!
6 PM

Orienteering 21:30 [3]

o-max out at trentham park. Impressed by Bill's course given the limited scope of the map! Good fun, with only a couple of legs that felt like flat bash running. Was the slowest 5km time trial I've done in years though ;)
ITB was alright, a couple of twinges but all around ok.
Got smashed by Tim and Shamus, but solidly beat magnus, so all good :)

Missioning 6:00:00 [2]

Fieldwork on Mt Ruapehu. 11hrs in total, but i'll estimate 6hrs on the move. Stunning day for it - headed off on the round the mtn track, to the far side of the whakapapa valley (where we got stranded 2 yrs ago). Then straight up the ridge. Traversed around the top of the valley taking in 8 different outcrops. Finishing off sidling around the bottom of a massive bluff. Pretty rugged stuff the entire time and very tired by the time we got back to the car, packs full of rock samples, just on dark at 9pm!

Amazing area and so lucky to get the chance to do this sort of field work where next to noone else goes!
