biking (commute) 20:00 [2]

to ais, had to avoid map which added 5mins on
8 AM

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

run over to the start and a bit around the start. Felt weird heading to the start for 8.30 when most of the others were only just starting to arrive at the event centre! (not as frustrating as then having to wait an hour for them to finish though!)

Orienteering race 39:03 [4] 5.5 km (7:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

NOL middle dist on bruce ridge.

Had the 2nd start as not a ranked runner, so i had fun clearing the spider webs for the others!
1. was longest leg of the course which was good to getback into the feel of orienteering, it's been a while! Mixed up my entry a bit which may have cost about 20s, then the control feature just didnt seem right. was in the middle erosion gully, which i went straight to but it wasnt there. then went up and over the rise and found it in another gully. weird.
2. was ok though the man made object was tiny and really hard to see in the undergrowth (as amber will testify)
3. should have gone straight rather than sticking to the track. 20s loss
4-13 were short mainly 150m legs in the undergrowth and amongst the many single track bike tracks. made mistakes with bearings on 5,6 and 8. 5 and 6 were small mistakes, 15-20s losses. 8 was a horrific bearing, ended up a good 100m up the hill from where i meant to be. lost just over a minute.
Pretty much just need a bit more confidence and bearing practice. The former will come with getting back into o training and races whilst I'm sure i'll get plenty of the latter with the terrain here in aus!
14 i was stuck behind a couple of the jnr guys and followed them off the track despite the fact i knew they were early. silly stuff. another 15s gone. Then map change and to sprint specs on 15. got my bearing out of 15 wrong (again, sigh) but apart from that sprint bit was fine.

All in all happy to be just 2mins off the pace. Had no idea where I was at fitness wise compared to the other girls before today really, and nav was pretty rusty after 8 months with no racing! 6 weeks til nationals to scratch up on techniques and conditioning :)

after relaxing since about 9am, 1pm suddenly popped up from nowhere and only had time for a quick warmup. missed the team photo too somewhere in there...oops

Orienteering race (NOL mixed sprint relay) 12:20 [5] 2.2 km (5:36 / km)
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 4

Frantic mass start with a deceptive looking 1st leg. My first analysis of the route ended with a dead end, but fortunately i figured it out before commiting and branched left before the first building. Half the field didnt however and got stuck in the deadend, which really split things up.
Besides from that didn't really have any hiccups, was a a good sprint with plenty of tight turns and quick decisions and plenty of splits too given the mass start. Ended up in the lead group but had slightly diff controls from the rest towards the end which left me in 4th

Orienteering race 11:13 [5] 2.1 km (5:20 / km)
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 4

Had to back up for 2nd sprint a mere 15mins later which was tough especially after the middle in the morning too!

Murray brought us in a little behind the leaders but I was still heading out with shannon.
Very similar course to the first one but with diff splits this time round, and a had a slightly shorter split than the first course. kept playing leap frog with shannon the entire way round until she missed a stair case towards the end. caught time up on jo and a couple of others in front but didnt have enough gas left in the tank to catch them completely.

Running 35:00 [3]

easy run to stretch the legs out before the weekend. Up and around little black mtn.

think i saw my first snake today. Cant be sure though. There was something in the creek that the ducks got away from pretty damn fast and it was mainly under the surface but for a little bit that looked like a snakes head. i'll count it

Note
(rest day)

resting up before the weekend. Did mean to go to hurtsies again this morning, but given how extraordinarily sore i was yday I thought it would be best to leave it so i dont feel the same on saturday! Was more than happy to skip when i woke up at 6.30 to the sound of rain...

Felt so good to not do any training today!

Orienteering (Black mtn peninsular) 19:49 [4] 3.5 km (5:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

don't think ive ever run a race with such disregard to dog legs, but to be fair it kinda had to to make much use of the map.
Was so so sore all day from hurtsies yday morning, but once I got going it wasn't too bad. Ankle hasnt been too happy since sunday, or rather the supporting muscles etc round the ankle havent so felt that a few times.

Not much going on navigationally apart from hitting top of banks at the right point. Went straight to 13 but didnt see it tucked under the cliff so kept going along the shore and ended up at 17 (about 30m away). Only mistake I can remember really. Everything else is just speed, or lack there of

went along to 'hurtsies' this morning. Was tempted not to, but once I knew it was on I knew i'd feel bad if i didnt go!
got split into beginners group and harder group; i was the only girl in the harder group. did sprints, circuits, core stuff etc. man my arms ache now! on the plus side i think i found the bridges etc way easier than the guys cos I have 2/3 the body weight :)
wasn't too hard really, sure it'll pick up in coming weeks though
5 PM

biking (commute) 20:00 [2]

to town and then back with a bag full of food so i won't starve in the next few days :)

not sure bout logging commuter biking, as its all in about 5min bursts round here. Can't wait to try out my new bike, but have to adjust the tilt of the seat first, and buy a good lock before leaving it anywhere. which means getting to abike store before they close in the evening!
7 PM

Running 31:26 [3]
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011

Finally dragged myself out for a run. was severely tempted not to but my new inov8s arrived today so couldnt resist breaking them in. Just through csiro around a couple of the lower tracks and up towards the lab on black mtn. then more exploring of csiro on the way back. Not sure if i'm meant to be in there or not?

found the australian national insect collection though, very exciting.

Running 48:00 [3]
shoes: Asics Trabuco 2011

Another exploratory run on black mtn. This time went around what i believe is called "little black mtn" cute :) took bout 15mins there then the loop is prob 11mins or so, so could be good for some tempo type sessions. Then added another loop for length and back home. Figured where abouts on black mtn the lab is, but I don't really have permission to go over the locked gate yet, so will ask bout it at work this week.

Saw some confused looking wallabies today, don't think they were too impressed at the controlled burn offs happening on the other side of the mtn. (it also screwed with our digital tv reception this evening which i wasn't happy about)

Strength and Conditioning 20:00 [1]

Amused Lorenzo when he walked in the flat to find me lying on my back with my legs in the air doing exercises.

Orienteering 1:26:00 [3]
shoes: VJ Integrators 2008

training out i don't even know where. 3 x 2..5km courses, or hopefully a bit longer or thats a terrible k rate! so good to be running in a forest with a map again albeit a forest full of spiders! :s ( igot a fully facial web after 30s running, turned around to see a not so happy palm sized spider in the remains of its web!)
turns out i can still navigate just about, now just have to remember how to run and navigate simmultaneously cos i was going so slow!

got a bit lost on the last few controls but it was real vague and no tapes. that's my excuse anyhow.

managed to stop my watch on the first one but was bout 30mins i guess, then 27 and 29.

also: integrators are still real good, but still a bit small. only sore towards the end though
