Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011
run over to the start and a bit around the start. Felt weird heading to the start for 8.30 when most of the others were only just starting to arrive at the event centre! (not as frustrating as then having to wait an hour for them to finish though!)
Orienteering race 39:03 [4] 5.5 km (7:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-talon 212 2011
NOL middle dist on bruce ridge.
Had the 2nd start as not a ranked runner, so i had fun clearing the spider webs for the others!
1. was longest leg of the course which was good to getback into the feel of orienteering, it's been a while! Mixed up my entry a bit which may have cost about 20s, then the control feature just didnt seem right. was in the middle erosion gully, which i went straight to but it wasnt there. then went up and over the rise and found it in another gully. weird.
2. was ok though the man made object was tiny and really hard to see in the undergrowth (as amber will testify)
3. should have gone straight rather than sticking to the track. 20s loss
4-13 were short mainly 150m legs in the undergrowth and amongst the many single track bike tracks. made mistakes with bearings on 5,6 and 8. 5 and 6 were small mistakes, 15-20s losses. 8 was a horrific bearing, ended up a good 100m up the hill from where i meant to be. lost just over a minute.
Pretty much just need a bit more confidence and bearing practice. The former will come with getting back into o training and races whilst I'm sure i'll get plenty of the latter with the terrain here in aus!
14 i was stuck behind a couple of the jnr guys and followed them off the track despite the fact i knew they were early. silly stuff. another 15s gone. Then map change and to sprint specs on 15. got my bearing out of 15 wrong (again, sigh) but apart from that sprint bit was fine.
All in all happy to be just 2mins off the pace. Had no idea where I was at fitness wise compared to the other girls before today really, and nav was pretty rusty after 8 months with no racing! 6 weeks til nationals to scratch up on techniques and conditioning :)
