Running 1:34:00 [3] 12.7 km (7:24 / km) +700m 5:48 / km

Mt Isobel. Just from Jack's pass to cut out approx 500m extra climb ;) 32min along the rocky ridge and steep as pinches to the top. A long pause and chat to a hiker on the top, by which time granny goat arrived, so I happily took a longer break. then a muddy twisty descent down to Hanmer Springs.

Hiking 3:30:00 [1] 14.0 km (15:00 / km) +700m 12:00 / km

Back out to the road end. Steep as climb to the pass was fun. Nice historical rabbit proof fence from 1889 to admire for most of the climb though. Totally helped! (Spoiler alert, it didn't work, the rabbits waited for winter and snow, then jumped over)

Hiking 5:30:00 [1] 23.0 km (14:21 / km) +600m 12:42 / km

Tramped through to the Waiau from lake tennyson, and on up the valley to meet mum for the last night of her through hike. Not the most exciting of hikes but a beautiful river valley and surrounding peaks. Got annoyed at the number of river crossings. I'm such a wimp.
Camped outside the brand new waiau hut and got to listen to everyone rave at how awesome the pass was. It looked nice from below too ;)

Running 55:00 [2] 8.7 km (6:19 / km) +150m 5:49 / km

Trot around the W side of lake Tennyson. Along the lake front at first then up through the alpine beech and found a small track that sidled along through the matagouri. Couldn't see any sign of a way along the steep E side of the lake, so just turned around and retraced my route once the matagouri got too thick.

Running 3:45:00 [3] 25.5 km (8:49 / km) +2000m 6:20 / km

Out to Angelus hut and back, with a nosey round the tarns to boot. Considered an expedition up to sunset saddle, but my legs were a bit tired and there was enough climb for them on the return leg anyhow. Stunner of a day for it and got a few nice conversations with and comments from trampers, always nice for the confidence ;)

Running 2:16:00 [3] 22.5 km (6:03 / km) +350m 5:36 / km

Around lake Rotoiti, but got dropped off at the My Robert car park, so skipped the first few km of the race route...taking the holiday running option. ;)
Did a bonus out and back 3km from coldwater hut to catch up Granny goat and deliver her some extra black jelly beans. She's tramping through from st arnaud to lake Tennyson while I play car shuttle. Beaut day. Whisky falls was nice but didn't live up to it's name.

Running 32:00 [3] 4.5 km (7:07 / km) +300m 5:20 / km

Quick Christmas run up kaukau. complete white out in the clouds along the top. Counts as white christmas?

Running 1:29:00 [3] 13.8 km (6:27 / km) +700m 5:09 / km

Up Otari and a loop of Crow's nest from Wilton bush. Nice conditions on the tops, slight breeze and overcast. Saw two black bunnies today - thereby busting the myth of the single (sterile) black bunny.
Someone seriously needs to head up there with a rifle and a rabbit stew recipe, they're everywhere.

skjog 45:00 [2] 7.5 km (6:00 / km)

Foxton beach reserve with the parents. Mum ditched us early on and headed to the open dunes, while dad hung on behind. Beautiful sand dune forest with a maze of mtb tracks winding around themselves. We ran for 25mins, then I thought I'd turn for home - ran for another 5mins and ended up at the same spot we'd been 15mins into the run! Then ran for another 5mins and found the car! Thoroughly confused! The windy mtb tracks seriously screw with your sense of direction and distance!

Running 1:03:00 [3] 10.2 km (6:11 / km) +480m 5:00 / km

Back track and Sledge track out the back of Palmy. Brutal hill to come down, made worse by the high grass...lucky the river was there to ice my grass rash in at the end. Nowhere near as bad as last week though. First time always seems to be worst.

Biking 35:00 [1] 13.0 km (2:42 / km)

out and back from the bach

Orienteering 53:00 [3] 7.2 km (7:22 / km)

A couple of middle distance courses on Osgiliath. Second one was truncated by new felling, but otherwise nice. Unfortunately my 'new' SH compass, which was donated to me by a Danish guy at WMOC this year, is one of the dodgy Silva ones. I.e. it points any direction it feels like, but hardly ever north. Usually when I blame the compass, I know the problem is really just my nav. But this time....ACTUALLY THE COMPASS. I wonder how that guy performed at WMOC in NZ? Did he not notice the problem with his compass?!

Anyway, put it in my back pocket for the second course and my bearings got much neater.

Orienteering 25:00 [4] 5.0 km (5:00 / km)

O-max at Seatoun.

Having a good head-head race with Jake, until he stopped to tie his shoelace...
*shakes head*
Got a bit confused as I kept seeing Connor and Ruairi on the various loops. They were wearing identical outfits, so I honestly couldn't tell you who I saw when or how many times. Just. Irishmen everywhere.

Running warm up/down 27:00 [2] 4.7 km (5:45 / km)

Running 55:00 [3] 8.4 km (6:33 / km) +500m 5:03 / km

Johnston's hill loop from Wilton. Got mega grass rash on my legs thanks to taking the sidling track to try and avoid the wind. Nice run though. Spotted the infamous black bunny, along with like 1000 brown ones.

10 AM

Running 1:10:00 [1] 8.0 km (8:45 / km) +375m 7:05 / km

Walk-jog of the escarpment track with Penny, Lisa and Tessa. Views.

10 AM

Running 1:36:00 [2] 12.5 km (7:41 / km) +550m 6:18 / km

O-gang run up Mt Lowry and along the ridge. Legs felt good but HR was high compared to the effort. Combination of the remnants of sickness and the heat. Still have to back off.

Saturday Dec 15, 2018 #

4 PM

Running 1:16:00 [2] 11.0 km (6:55 / km) +600m 5:26 / km

Skyline jog with Tessa. Almost stood on some baby quails, they were TINY and very effective at hiding in the like 4cm high grass. Not great parenting by the adults, who waddled off and left the kids in the middle of the track.

Friday Dec 14, 2018 #

4 PM

Running 32:00 [2] 4.5 km (7:07 / km) +350m 5:07 / km

Up Kaukau. Still got a thick head but no headache while running today. Progress continues!
That view though. <3<3<3 home

skjog 30:00 [1] 5.0 km (6:00 / km)

Got out for a jog in Wilton Bush with granny goat. Lungs and legs felt OK but had a pounding headache by 15min in. The cold is going somewhere though. 70% voice today.

yerp. Back up to 50% of a voice today.

Running 45:00 [1] 4.5 km (10:00 / km) +250m 7:50 / km

walk-jog up kaukau with the granny goat.
My Norwegian cold survived, and indeed thrived, on the long flights. I've lost my voice somewhere along the way, maybe about mid-Indian Ocean. Hoping it arrives soon, delayed but un-damaged.
Summer is nice, but I feel a bit like death warmed up. Gutted to skip O-max but let mum drag me out the door and up the hill instead. 50% slow jog 50% walk. (she will claim otherwise when she sees this though)

Travel Day 3:
Survived the long flight. In fact, it wasn't too bad at all. The big plane meant there's plenty of space for stretching the legs out. I refrained from doing a strength session mid-flight, although I still reckon doing lunges and running drills down the aisle would be well appreciated entertainment to the others on the flight.
Waiting around for my Jetstar flight in Auckland was a pain in the backside, especially as I couldn't check in my big bag for a couple of hours. Still prefer flying through Australia I reckon.
Made it home, and managed to keep my eyes open til about 9pm.

Travel day 2; arrived delayed in Dubai. By the time I negotiated my way to the hotel I had time for 4hrs sleep (of which i managed 3, tops) before heading back for stage 2. Felt a bit extreme, but I suspect 9hrs in the airport would have felt worse. And I got a decent breakfast. So I'll call it worth it.

Stage 2: 16hr20min direct flight to Auckland. Got to try it once I guess... Can I log it as mental training?
Actually not sure if I'm more worried bout this leg or stage 3: the jetstar flight to wgtn ;)

Travel day 1. Made it successfully to Oslo airport despite all trains being cancelled between Oslo S and Lillestrøm. Classic.

Nooooope.
Hectic last day. Still, managed to get everything that needed doing done. I think. Maybe. We'll find out!

Orienteering 58:00 [3] 6.6 km (8:47 / km) +150m 7:53 / km

The snow arrived just in time for høiås tonight :) very pretty but also very hard to run in. Minimal visibility and maximum sketchiness on the slopes. And also quite cold. Who'd have known?!
Attempted a control pick but got too cold after a couple of km so bailed out to a track and went for a trot around the paths followed by shower, sauna and waffle(s) to warm up.

Running 37:00 [2] 6.3 km (5:52 / km) +170m 5:10 / km

Went from feeling OK in the morning to having a really sore throat by mid afternoon. So flaked on intervals and jogged in høiåsmarka instead. First 10mins from hsk huset with my laptop and bag, then from home into the trails. Definitely iced over now, had to keep an eye out. Would really suck to slip over and break a leg now!

Running 1:09:00 [3] 11.8 km (5:51 / km) +200m 5:23 / km

Dunno whether I'm coming or going this week really. A lot going on and work plans changing by the day. Probably a good idea not to try focus on a map after a full on couple of days.
Hit up hoiasmarka instead. Puddles threatening to turn to ice. Mud was still fresh enough though.

Orienteering 48:00 [4] 5.75 km (8:21 / km) +180m 7:13 / km

Middle Distance training at Kjølesjøen. Had Bjørn tailing me today, so pressure was on not to get him lost ;)

Navigation was scratchy today, a couple of off bearings and fair bit of getting close to the control, hesitating, then realising I was in the right spot but couldn't see the white tape :/
Big time loss on #8 when my direction was off, which I recovered from fine. Problem was that on the map the control was on a stone on flat section, while from where I was standing on the ground it was up on a distinct slope. Couldn't match up map to ground so relocated, just in time for Nils to show me where the tape was anyway.
At least I felt good physically :)

Maps somehow printed without marshes on them, bit of a bummer given 50% of the map is marsh, but can't really blame my navigation on it!
