Orienteering 35:00 [3]

Went out to the E part of the Lavarone map and ran a middle training (nicked off the French DOMA this time!)
Beautiful Forest! Really, really nice to run in. And my legs felt good after a few days of lead like heaviness. Just cruised around, as racing in the afternoon. Again, almost all of the control sites were taped, which was nice. Ranging from toilet paper, to tapes, through to full controls! My compass work was a bit off to start, and control circle accuracy too.
DOMA time includes stopping to talk to Ness and Greta on course :)

Orienteering 16:30 [5]

3 days of trenches sprint relay leg 4.

Bit of a rude reintroduction to European town sprint racing! Easy #1, and long leg #2, so I had a quick scan and selected my RC for #2 early on. Then focussed on not missing my alley to #1...too much! Turned in to the first one, then belatedly realised there was no way through to the path I wanted! So had to go back...20s down the drain straight away grrr.
Then exiting #1 I realised there was an uncrossable wall on my quickly scanned route to #2, so wanted to switch to the upper RC (which was the fastest it turned out). But misread the path to the R as being stairs...and couldn't see stairs on the ground! So assumed I'd already passed it, and was committed to the lower RC. Executed it fine, but was definitely slower.
3,4,5 were fine, but again, on reading ahead to #6, I'd seen the stairs on the map and assumed there was thus a gap in teh uncrossable wall. Nope. Again, an easy fix, but lost me 15s or so on RC I'd say.
From there, the shorter controls were fine. I got into the flow of things and finished off strongly.
Frustrated about uncharacteristic mistakes with uncrossable walls, but to be fair to myself town sprints here are a lot different to uni sprints at home! Have to adapt :)

(rest day)

Was going to go training once Alex, Lachy and Ness arrived in the arvo, but after some delays opted for a rest day as going to training would mean not getting home til ~9pm.
Happy with that call, and got a solid sleep...until our hostel roomie got home at midnight and turned lights on/crashed around. Some people don't have much clue about hostel etiquette!

Orienteering 39:00 [3] 4.0 km (9:45 / km)

Middle distance on Lavarone Rochette. Just cracked 10min kms! Legs were ok but lungs still smashed today.

Running intervals 14:00 [4]

7x1min on/off around the tracks and off track on the map. Good to get the legs turning over properly! Got back to the bags just as it started pouring with rain, which was a good excuse to find a cafe to sit in and have coffee while waiting for he bus home :)

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 km (10:00 / km)

Middle distance on Folgaria. Took a while to get in to the map, plus some unfortunately placed logged areas. Great to be back in continental forest! Lungs and legs feeling the jetlag (and altitude?). Was an extra bonus to find flags at the controls too! (apart from no1, apparently I didn't find that one...)

Running 58:00 [2] 9.0 km (6:27 / km)

Another easy run from Rovereto. Initially planned to head up to Folgaria for an O session, but we're both smashed from hard last weeks at home, so took the extra rest day :) (plus it started to rain as we waited for the bus, so we bailed haha).
Ran down to Lizzato (obviously my 'hood), then up to the big war memorial...which had a big fence around it and was closed. So we continued our climb to the giant peace bell (largest ringing bell inthe world)...which also had a giant fence around it and was closed :(
Couldn't even glimpse it from outside. Boo.
But got some nice views, and survived a crazy italian driver who tried to reverse over us in a completely empty car park. Far out. it was way too close for comfort!

Running 23:00 [2] 4.5 km (5:07 / km)

Arrived in Rovereto in late evening after a seamless trip from Canberra. The biggest holdup/stress was when my bag took an hour to appear at Milan airport. Must have been a late siesta fr the bag handlers...

Easy jog around town with Greta. We're staying in a hostel in the old part of town, which would make an amazing sprint map! So so cool to finally be here :)

Orienteering 37:30 [4]

ACT middle champs.
A lot of straight running in this course tbh, and a couple of dodgy areas. Actually enjoyed doing a 110 deg turn out of the start triangle, that was different! Lost time at #3, which was described as a reentrant junction?! Strange description aside, there was only one reentrant in the circle anyway. On top of this, the control was clearly marked outside of the green stripes, which was thick head high scrub of some sort, so I searched all around the edges of it. Looked for the reentrant junction...no junction, and no control. So eventually decided the control must be stuck in the thick of the scrub out of sight! Stupid control site really, sorry.
Then lost time on 6 when the control was in the wrong spot, zoomed down the hill (via a faceplant which left my RH spurting blood everywhere), to the watercourse junction....no control!! Looked down to the lower jnction...nothing. So went to the only control in sight, back up on the track, which I'd assued was a blue or green control. Only to find it had my number!! Don't really know how that could have been put in the wrong place, and not picked up on?

ANYWAY. My grumbles aside, I ended up 3.5mins down on Hanny. But like yday, not too phased. I know where I'm at in my training, and know where the majority of that difference was gained/lost.

Also...my SI apparently didn't register at the start unit, despite it beeping and flashing at me. So my 'official' time is 1.50 longer than my actual time. Not sure if it's been fixed yet or not.

Football 1:30:00 [3]

We're seriously struggling for players atm, so there was no way I was getting out of this match. Was shattered after orienteering, but managed somehow. Then home for a shower and straight to the aiport, where I struggled to stay awake long enough to get on the plane!

Orienteering 15:20 [5]

ACT sprint champs. Great course that used the most of the small area, thanks Grace and Jo!
Legs were tired after 3 hard days training, but brain wasup to the task until the penultimate control where I got distracted by Al and missed my path through the buildings!
About 30s behind Hanny, but not too phased about that atm :)

incl. WU/WD.

Was kindly given the map for R1 Jim Sawkin's memorial event, as I'll miss it in a couple (1?) week's time. Top secret course, so nothing to say here ;)

Nah, the map is well done, and the course is a real physical challenge. I ran out of time so only did 2/3rds of it - so it's proper classic length! Should be a good'n.

Bumped in to the police out in the middle of the map. Had to have a chat so I didn't look like I was running away from them into the bush...
Also took a nasty stack, which made the decision to cut the course short easy. Nothing horrific, but my shoulder is a giant bruise now, my knee is yet more bashed up, and who knows what will happen to my right index fingernail!

Rearranged match from a couple of weeks time, as we're losing players to injury/trips left right and centre.
Didn't effect the results a blotch though. Got smashed.

I got to play AM though, which was a nice change. Got to do lots and lots of running as I was allowed to push up a lot more than usual :) On the down side, I had to mark Grace Field. I swear she's twice as tall as me, and those long legs can run fast!

Good stuff, ran it in 4 control blocks with mass starts. Good practice at picking the map up and quickly figuring out where the heck I was. Plenty of interesting route choice too, and well matched for speed :)

Orienteering 32:00 [3] 2.5 km (12:48 / km)

Went training out at Boboyan with Lachy.

Started off with a rock only map exercise. Cool stuff, except I set it on a very steep hillside, littered with hundreds of rocks, which was very overgrown! knew it would be tough when I set it, but didnt take into account all of the undergrowth and debris.
So was extremely slow going. I completely missed 6 as I couldn't see any more big boulders below me, so tricked myself into thinking i was on the right one. Was doubtful the whole time, and figured I was wrong 100m later, but wasn't going back today!

Orienteering 35:58 [3] 5.0 km (7:12 / km)

Middle distance course.
Again, a lot of rubbish under foot that made it slow going. My brain just wasn't quite on task today. Mind kept wandering back to work and trip planning.

Orienteering 31:10 [3] 4.2 km (7:25 / km)

Control Picking exercise set by Lachy. Good practice at short legs with direction changes. Went well for the first 8 or so controls, lost myself in the undergrowth to 9. Then kinda hit the wall. Jogged through to 13 before picking it up again.
Need more sleep.

Another day of no running. Hopefully will do the groin a world of good anyway.

Finally resubmitted my manuscript to JGR today. It's been a nightmare working through all of the edits. And to be honest, as reconfirmed all of the reasons I don't really want to go into academia.
Now it's off my desk hopefully I can do more Europe planning, some more training, and more sleeping!

tweaked my groin doing sprint training yesterday, so giving it the day off. Pretty happy to get out of soccer training to be honest. This week has been horrifically busy at work, with a paper resubmission deadline this weekend and full days measuring still to be had.

As usual managed a pathetic trip over the smallest tree root on the flattest track towards the end. For such a small fall, I now have an epic bruise on my knee!

Went to the Dr again today. Despite the fire raging in the back of my throat, apparently I'm in tip top shape. Blood work was A ok, blood pressure, heart rate, glands, all good. So I must just be stressed.

Came out with two medical certificates - one saying I'm unfit to work/study for 5 days (forced upon me), and another saying I'm fine and in good health to race in Italy. Pretty good outcome really! Apart from the throat still hurting...
