Running 1:02:00 [3] 10.2 km (6:05 / km) +400m 5:05 / km

From wilton bush, south toward the sanctuary, up and across to Johnston's hill and back through the lower tracks in Wilton. Managed to avoid the gale force Northerly, with the sacrifice of having to run a couple of km on concrete (ew)

Orienteering 13:35 [4] 2.2 km (6:10 / km)

o-max around Oma Rapeti. Cool little map with a maze of tracks in native bush, 1:2500 map with 5m contours haha. Very easy to miss a track turn off and then be very lost.
Lost about 30s on #4 when I got the wrong track and went the long way around a loop. Otherwise happy and clean. A few ankle tweaks on roots along the way but all good.
Lucky I didn't read the name of the map before the run, as once I did I just had the song in my head the rest of the evening...

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)

i forgot my watch so need to wait for Ellie to log hers before I know time and distance... ;)

Missioning 2:30:00 [3] 10.8 km (13:53 / km) +1200m 8:56 / km

From Waiohine gorge CP up the valley along the gorge, then on up to Cone saddle and up the ridge to Mt Cone. Met Granny goat on top, who'd tramped through from Otaki forks over the previous day and a bit. We timed it remarkably well, with her arriving on the top 5mins before me. Not bad considering we were both 30mins behind our agreed meeting time!
4 and a bit km along the rough and rooty single track along the valley in the muggy heat to begin with. Then turned hard left and up the saddle track, which isn't exactly maintained, although someone had helpfully put up orange tapes in the most overgrown bits. The track climbs quickly to 570m, before then dropping a bit and sidling back up toward the saddle at 560m. I refilled my water at the bottom of the climb, but was thankful for the couple of stream crossings towards the top where I could restock before hitting the top ridge.
From the saddle to the top is about 2.5km with 500m climb. Hadn't eaten enough by this point, so was a struggle on the last climbs. Happy to find mum on the top and collapse in a sheltered nook in the snow grass to eat lunch.

Missioning 1:15:00 [1] 3.5 km (21:26 / km) +140m 17:51 / km

Took GG's larger pack for the steep descent back down to the Cone hut turn off

skjog 30:00 [2] 3.7 km (8:06 / km) +30m 7:48 / km

Swapped packs again and got to let loose down the last descent back to the gorge. Nice long ice bath for my legs while waiting for the GG at the bottom (while chilling the bottle of L&P in the river)

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.0 km (6:00 / km) +60m 5:13 / km

Orienteering 21:00 [3] 3.4 km (6:11 / km) +120m 5:15 / km

Sprint intervals around Vic Uni. Three intervals of around 6mins each. Second two went into the most technical parts of the map. Definitely need to invest extra seconds in understanding the whole route before blasting off .

Orienteering 11:45 [4] 2.0 km (5:53 / km) +50m 5:13 / km

Moved up to Karori cemetery for a couple of mass start trainings. First up was runners choice. Happy with my choice, although the map was dodgy - what was a passable wall and yellow on the map actually had graves on the ground...so lost a fair whack of time going around it. Got beaten by 3/4 of the boys.

Orienteering 12:15 [4] 2.32 km (5:17 / km) +70m 4:35 / km

Butterfly loop mass start. So much climb, so much lactate. Slipped on a corner and cut my leg open on a grave headstone...i'm probably going to hell anyway, but add another eternity to my sentence. :/
2nd this time round.

Running 40:00 [2] 8.1 km (4:56 / km) +40m 4:49 / km

Stopped at QEII park on the way home for a nice flat run. Or, up and down the dunes until I got tired and bailed out to the beach. Beaut day. Mountains one day, beach the next. So good to be home
7 PM

Football 23:00 [3]

First game of indoor in about 10 years. Still as intense as I remember. So out of breath so fast! Didn't score but set up a few - standard.

Missioning 2:15:00 [3] 13.0 km (10:23 / km) +1240m 7:02 / km

Up in the 'naki for a job interview. Declined their offer of flying me up and instead drove up - gave me two nights with my brother and his family, and an afternoon on Mt Taranaki :)
Headed up Fanthom's peak. The cloud cleared while I was in my interview, so was clear skies and a stunning afternoon for it. Not much running on the way up, boy it gets steep above the bushline! Was literally 2 steps forward for 1 slide back on the scree. Tough work. Had a couple of patches of snow to negotiate just before the peak, but could climb around them rather than having to risk the crossing. Windy as at Syme hut, so was welcome for the shelter. Took in the surroundings and had a bite to eat before having real fun sliding back down the scree slope.

Did a loop of the nature walks at the bottom, partly to get some actual running in, partly to see the waterfalls, and partly cos I didn't want to get back in the car just yet.

Interview went well enough, and living in Taranaki would be alright. I mean. It has a nice mtn ;)

skjog 34:00 [2] 5.2 km (6:32 / km)

skjog in watchtower as malcolm said it was quite nice and ready for remapping. Very true in the first couple of blocks...then I skjogged too far and had a lot of fun extricating myself from block #3 which still has A LOT of thinned trees covering the ground. Eventually found my way out, with a direct hit on the old fire ponds, so had to do more bush bashing to get out around the ponds.

All in all though, the dunes are as beautiful as i remember. Getting close to remapping age.

Missioning 2:44:00 [3] 22.8 km (7:12 / km) +1050m 5:51 / km

Can't make the rogaine on Wednesday evening, so had a run around the map this evening. Went out intending to do 2hrs, almost cut it home after 1.5, but then ended up doing 2.45. Go figure.
Can't give much away before Wednesday, so distance and climb to come. ;)

Running 1:17:00 [3] 12.8 km (6:01 / km) +560m 4:56 / km

o-gang run from the bengtsson's, down silversky and the gorge, then up through Wadestown onto Te Ahumairangi, around and over, down through Wilton and back up home through Otari-Wilton bush.
Lots of looping and scooping today. The run improved my mood but still dealing with low mental energy levels and BS thresholds.

Running 1:10:00 [3] 11.3 km (6:12 / km) +425m 5:13 / km

Morning run thanks to a lunchtime job interview and organising O-max tonight. Zig-zag up Johnston's hill, had to do an out and back thanks to the closed power-line track, but there's always an alternate way to the top ;)
45 bunnies out there today. And that wasn't even with a visit to bunny central!

Legs are stuffed from Tuesday still. Hills hurt.

Running 1:44:30 [3] 15.6 km (6:42 / km) +550m 5:42 / km

Escarpment track out and back with Immy and Greg. Lovely evening for it, calm and warm, just some severe sun-strike on the return leg! Immy set an impressive consistent pace throughout, including running up all 682 steps on the outward leg. I hung on behind her, relying on us having a breather at the top...but she just kept going! :O
Went a good pace between the three of us. Legs were screaming by the last few undulating bits, and got absolutely annihilated running across the two swing bridges at the end!

3 PM

Running 42:00 [3] 6.5 km (6:28 / km) +210m 5:34 / km

Test running of the best O-max there ever will be.

Did some extra hill reps so that anyone reading this won't know the actual climb on the course (or did I?! or did I take climb off this record?!)

Sunday Nov 10, 2019 #

Note

Had just about got over jetlag, but am now utterly smashed again after 3 nights of minimal sleep (thanks to a concert and mixed combinations of 5 little kids), plus 15hrs of driving over two days.
So was stoked to get home on sunday night to find that I had to urgently complete and send in all the H&S paperwork for this week's afterwork o-max.
3 PM

Running 41:00 [2] 6.7 km (6:07 / km)

Another short run, this time at Foxton dunes, enroute from Palmy to waitarere. Love the mtb tracks in the forest here, so disorientating! Downside is you lose some distance on your gps thanks to all the tight twisting and turning.
Real bugger that the landowner refused us permission to make a map here, it really is nice forest and sweet dune detail.

Running 45:00 [3] 8.7 km (5:10 / km) +60m 5:00 / km

Pressured my brother into a stop in Taupo so I could get a run at least. From Huka Falls (never fails to impress), down-river on the main foot trail, across the river and back up to the falls on the mtb track (much more fun). Then weaved through tourists at the falls, and continued up to spa park. Forgot just how stunning the river is with its million variations of blue and green. Paused at the hot water streams and beaches, but was hot enough to want a cold river today!

Note
(rest day)

Long drive up to Auckland to see Noel Gallagher and U2 in concert :D
Had to do school drop off before leaving, and it's pre-summer in NZ = roadworks everywhere, so we made it with minimal stops and no time to spare.

Thursday Nov 7, 2019 #

Note
(rest day)

Up to palmy to my Brother's place. Should have run in the morning, but...
Always very hard to extract myself from the littlies and break out for a run once i'm there.

Running 20:30 [2] 3.9 km (5:15 / km) +50m 4:56 / km

To wilton bush for a lift out to O-max
6 PM

Running 24:30 [4] 5.55 km (4:25 / km)

Omax #2 St Pats Silverstream.

A literal run around the fields, then a nicer loop around the school, before blasting a couple of streets at the end. Started head-head with Stuart, and the gap between us at the final pivot was probably equivalent to 18x SI air punches (i purposefully didn't use mine, and was quietly glad for the mini breaks it gave me at each control!).
Snuck ahead for the win when Stuart decided to keep his feet dry and take the bridge at the end. Wet feet all the way home for me, but totally worth it for O-max glory.

Running warm up/down 10:30 [1] 1.7 km (6:11 / km)

12 PM

Mtn Biking 1:05:00 [1] 10.9 km (5:58 / km) +375m 5:05 / km

Standard loop at Makara with Tessa, running a bit short on time, so no exploring trails today. Our own fault - we were so busy chatting on the drive there that we got to Karori before realising we'd forgotten to pick up my borrowed bike from Lisa's!

Nice flowey (def a word) cruise. Marred only by the traumatising experience of a suicidal baby bunny attempting to kamikaze into my bike on one of the narrow paths sidling the hill. Was happily cruising and chatting when this little blur of brown exploded from the bushes to my right. It managed to zigzag between my wheels twice already while i registered what it was and if it was bad if it squished (wtf - how could the answer to that ever be no?!). Having registered that it was the tiniest tiny rabbit ever, I then slammed on the brakes, as it somehow squirted itself right through the tiny gap between the front of my front wheel and the ground. Honestly, it must have felt the rubber on its back! Having failed with me, it then made a beeline for Tessa's bike in front, managing another zigzag between her wheels before finally disappearing off into the bushes to the left. Dunno if the bunny or I have been left more traumatized by the whole experience.

skjog 55:00 [2] 7.6 km (7:14 / km) +350m 5:53 / km

Semi-skjog with Tessa, from Wilton's up to skyline, round to Johnston's hill and down through the cemetery.
There are hundreds of bunnies on the skyline. But. Exciting news: There is a white bunny round by the old chimney! Yet to confirm if it's simply white, or albino. Can also confirm that black bunnies have black tails, not white (has been a family matter of debate for a bit). Also saw a bunny with no ears, chased it for a bit to confirm. Looked weird as, but yep, stumpy little ears. odd.

Missioning 4:30:00 [1] 17.75 km (15:13 / km) +1250m 11:15 / km

Sweet day in the Tararuas with Jake and Granny goat. From Waiohine road end, up to the new centre of nz plaque, over mt reeves, down to Tutuwai hut and up the Tauherenikau to Cone Hut. Back up and over to Waiohine.
Typical Tararua steep ascents, nice undulating tops and brutal descents. A surprising lack of mud until the last spur. Got a stunner of a day for it with barely a breeze and blue skies. Took it at a relaxed pace with plenty of breaks. Warm enough for a swim and shower under the waterfall at the end. Not that we could last more than a few seconds under the fall, it was so powerful!

Running 1:00:00 [2] 9.6 km (6:15 / km) +400m 5:10 / km

Pre-potluck o-gang run. From ngaio, up bell's track, over crow's nest, down the electricity board road and silversky, up through girl-guide woods and sidling back to Ararua st. Cruising up front with Stuart, doing loop and scoops for Magdiz and T-dawg.
