6 PM

Running 32:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:20 / km)

Time to test the ankle out. Up the gravel track to say hi to the sheep at Eklimoen, then home via lysløpa. Fine on uphills but twingy on the downhill and looser gravel. Some way to go yet then...

Note

Last day. Everyone is smashed. We got slower and starting making mistakes, so made the executive decision to cut the line short.
All in all we measured a 3950m ERT/IP line up and over a massive hill, through steep and rough forest, a couple of more-than-steep stream gullies, a fair bit of jungle, a farm where the farmer seemed to be chasing us with his combined harvester (starting cutting the grass before we were even out of the fields). Never measured but would estimate I hiked 12-18km a day up and down the line, often with some kind of equipment to carry (one cable and reel is 25kg and we had 10 of them down at any one time, and 6 to move between measurements. I tried to leave the heaviest work to the guys, but that's not always possible)

Note

11.5hrs. Getting tired.

Note

14hr day in the field today. Thanks to a farmer coming to us at 6pm and saying he was going to cut the grass in the fields out cables were nicely laid out in.

Tuesday Jun 25, 2019 #

Note

Fieldwork.
5 hours mobilisation and 9hrs of cable hauling etc etc.

Ellipse 1:08:00 [3] 15.4 km (4:25 / km)

Sunday funday at the empty gym. Decent steady effort on the ellipse. Was going for 75 but tendon at the bag of the ankle started twinging at 67.
Shame really, I'd only seen this one Amcar with two middle aged blokes blasting out music of it cruise by 9 times by then. Was hoping for double digits!

Mtn Biking 2:20:00 [2] 40.4 km (3:28 / km)

Went for a very nice bike in Ertemarka. Then, at the furthest point out, my rear derailleur cable snapped. And of course it was in the hardest gear, and of course I didn't bring my bike-tool.
So had to hike the bike out of the single tracks to the nearest gravel road, then slogged it the 20km home with three gears (two really, as one was too tough to use on anything but downhill paved road).

So now I have an ankle that doesn't like running. A crippled bike. And no car keys (long story...)
Lucky the lakes might be warm enough to swim in soon?

Note

Saw the dr today. Best guess is that my daily aspirin is starting to irritate my stomach. Waiting on blood tests to see if they show anything.
4 PM

Ellipse 1:15:00 [3] 16.7 km (4:29 / km)

Intervals on the ellipse. 18min Wu, 8x3min with 1min easy between, and then WD.

Missioning 3:00:00 [0]

Finishing off marking and clearing the line. Slightly less jungle. Slightly larger cliffs.

Just quietly, this job was meant to have been done by someone else while I was on leave last week... :/
6 PM

Mtn Biking 54:00 [3] 17.0 km (3:11 / km) +240m 2:58 / km

Home and straight out biking. Quickly felt like crap, same kind of thing as the Jukola test race 2.5weeks ago. HR monitor was going crazy, but I think that was a separate issue (still gets me very nervous though). Gave up on a full session and went home.

Missioning (Jungle Macheteing) 4:00:00 [0]

Back to BS fieldwork logging. A half day orienteering between GPS points, setting up a string course between them and then clearing all the jungle from the line so the 'kids' can get through with the cables next week.
Took us 2hrs to get through 200m of particularly nice vegetation.

10 AM

Running 45:00 [3] 6.3 km (7:09 / km) +280m 5:51 / km

Jog with Eve from the accomm. Back to testing the ankle again. Same as before, OK and pain-free on paths, full concentration required for rooty paths to avoid painful jarring. Ok and pain-free in soft terrain. Inevitable jarring in rocky terrain.
Made the decision that I either have to switch to a short leg for Venla if I want to try and race full-pace, or drop to a lower team and manage a longer leg more slowly. Left the choice to the coaches.

Orienteering 57:00 [3] 6.9 km (8:16 / km) +230m 7:05 / km

Jukola training. Took the support off my ankle as it doesn't help with the painful compression motion anyway, and it was aggravating my achiles/lower calf.
Getting around alright in the terrain and was feeling positive about atleast racing Venla. Then went over on my right ankle. Sat down and had a laugh about it, then continued. Ironically I ran much better and more naturally on my troublesome left ankle after that...until the last control of the training, when I crunched it on a rock :( :( :(
Was getting bursts of pain fairly often jogging in the terrain then. Hobble-jogged the 1.5km back to the car and very unsure about the prospects of racing on Saturday.

4 PM

Running 45:00 [3] 7.2 km (6:15 / km) +200m 5:29 / km

Run with Elena and Sabine from our accomm. Rough tracks were testing on the ankle at times, it was better in the soft terrain, but jarring on roots/rocks when on the paths.

Running 20:00 [2] 3.6 km (5:33 / km)

Squad Jog around the Sprint Relay model with Tara, Tash and Mary.
6 PM

Running warm up/down 28:00 [2] 4.6 km (6:05 / km)

Orienteering 14:10 [4] 3.45 km (4:06 / km)

Sprint Relay in Helsinki. Running last leg in an Aus-NZ composite team with Mary - Rob - Duncs - Me.
Headed out 2nd to last and just enjoyed the course. Couldn't get full speed with my ankle, particularly on the cobbles at the far end of the course, but did what I could and enjoyed the atmosphere :) Picked us up a few spots

Running 16:00 [1] 3.4 km (4:42 / km)

to and from the gym. found it eventually.

Biking 30:00 [3]

No ellipse, had to suffer on the bike instead. threw in some intervals to liven things up

Running 30:00 [3] 5.4 km (5:33 / km)

Team jog

Friday Jun 7, 2019 #

12 PM

Orienteering 42:00 [2] 5.1 km (8:14 / km)

world cup model event

first attempt at running since monday. very relieved to be pain free on tracks to the start triangle. In the forest, was more hesitant and would twinge nastily if ilanded wrong. I could go at a jog/walk reasonably comfortably, but that's not good enough for world cup. So no racing this weekend. Refocus on getting it right for Venla.

Took a few controls then jogged back on tracks. beautiful terrain and forest. Shame.

Football warm up/down 20:00 [1] 1.8 km (11:07 / km)

Still feeling sick this morning, but settled down in the arvo so I decided to give football a go. Warned our coach that I wasn't 100%

Football 22:00 [3] 2.5 km (8:48 / km)

v Sarpsborg 08.
Managed 20 mins before injuring my ankle in a very innocuous turn. Nobody around, just twisted in the wrong way and my already dodgy left ankle went. Subbed straight off. Frustrated to say the least.

Lost 6-4.

Running warm up/down 20:45 [2] 3.6 km (5:46 / km) +40m 5:28 / km

Orienteering 56:00 [3] 5.75 km (9:44 / km) +350m 7:28 / km

Jukola test race.
Not feeling great last night or this morning, but put it down to period pains. Apparently not though (that was just bonus), something up with my stomach. Feeling nauseous right from the warm-up and was wondering if I should start or not. In hindsight, maybe not.
Tried to run hard to #1 but body wasn't feeling it, and I made a big cock-up on the extra forestry tracks. Ended up on the wrong hillside and took me a fair while to relocate (4+min).
Decided to keep going to #2, long leg. The actual leg went OK, but body was not having things. Absolutely empty and nausea continuing. Came into the circle with Markus and completely missed the control.
THought of jogging back, but there was no easy way and I don't like giving up. So decided to continue and focus on getting navigation right. Big struggle with some dry retching and not able to do more than a jog, even on the tracks.
Made it halfway to #6 where I decided to go across the open marsh (was proud I'd actually read the PM and that they were runnable). Well. I sunk in up to my bum with both legs. Bit worried that there was nobody behind me to possibly come to my aid. Had to employ the spreading your body-weight technique and eventually wriggled my way free after 1.20 (timed off gps). That was the final straw. Walked home from there, with a couple of stops to try and wretch up whatever was messing with my stomach.

Solid day out.

Running 1:14:00 [2] 13.4 km (5:31 / km) +220m 5:06 / km

Waited for the rain to finish doing its thing before heading out for a 'short-long run'. So. Just a normal run really.
