Tiomila! Leg 5 for the 2nd team. Very disappointed to not make the first team this time around, to the point i've been fairly distracted in my training sessions the last couple of weeks. But, that's life. Take the knocks, pick yourself up and keep going!
Eve, Eva, Jo and Bodil did fantastic jobs on their legs, and sent me out around 20th position and within sight of the backs of Lina Strand (GMOK) and Ingrid Lundanes (NTNUI). In fact, up until Marika's gun run on 4th leg, we were neck and neck with our first team.
So went out knowing I had two very good runners to group with if I had the legs and head for it. Hung on on the run out, into the forest to #1, and then...the forest made no sense! found myself toeing a small ditch, at which point I realised I'd somehow overshot my control! A moment of panic before relocating and seeing the flag. I was pretty pissed as I'd lost my chance at hanging with the speedy group, when into the left of my vision came Lina, having also messed the first control.
So back in the game, was good to be pressed for speed, but felt that I could hold my own while still keeping contact and making sure we were headed to my control, not a split. This held until 3/4 of the way through our first long leg, when I heard footsteps approaching fast behind me. Was confused for a moment, as there were no male runners out in the forest with us?! But then Tove came effortlessly past and leaped over a stone wall in front of me. By the time I clambered over it she was 25m ahead, haha. Knew now that the game was on, as although I could stick with Lina and Ingrid, they probably had another gear to go into and could hang with Tove for longer than me.
That was quickly taken out of the equation anyway as right after the long leg I had a different split from the three of them... a hill top in some shitty green, while they had something they could stick in the white forest with. So never saw the three of them again. But along with Tove, we'd been joined by Anastasia Denisova, who had the same split as me. We battled on together, and were soon joiined by Denise Kosova, who'd had our split, but stuck with the Tove group longer by mistake.
The three of us pressed on together. Again, I was being pressed for speed, but was able to keep up by picking cleaner micro-route choices. We worked our way through to the arena passage together, at which point Anastasia put the pedal down and Denise and I couldn't respond. A bit disappointed as I knew the last loop was more technical and hoped I could get past them on technique. But a glance behind showed me noone coming up behind.
Disappointed again as I got a bad route through the green and slightly missed the control after the passage, and Denise got a head start on me. As I got the control I heard a crashing behind me, and turned to see Karolinn Olssen coming through the green. Well, shit.
I continued on and got the last loop done nice and cleanly, but knew Karro was close behind. She joined me as we popped out onto the track to the last control. I turned to her and had a bit of a laugh, I tried my best but no way in hell I could stick with her on the finish sprint!
Bit of a difference though, from passing out in the finish chute to trying to stick with the world's best finish sprinter!
All in all very happy with my run. I lost us two places on the last leg and that was to Tove and Karro, so I think that's allowable? Onward to Jukola...
Pulled off the finish line for an interview with Boris and Cris. Didn't they do an awesome job?! Their trailer was nice and warm too! but next year they could maybe have a drinks table in there for the interviewees? Just an idea! ;) find a drinks sponsor for the english commentary?
