Strength and Conditioning 44:00 [1]

I fell off the wagon in terms of my strength training and physio exercises in the last couple of months. Partly due to travel and work, partly due to the cbf factor. And, yeah I'm now paying for it with my ITB and other niggles. Karma can be a bitch.

So the S+C, and stretching is coming back on AP. Yes some may argue it doesn't count as training. But, people, it's vital in a well rounded to training plan. And putting it on here means you can hold me accountable when I don't do it! So. Here's to lots of grey bars on my training log - which will hopefully allow more of the red and orange bars in the near future :)

biking (commute) 35:00 [3]

holy heck I forgot how hazardous and stressful biking across campus can be in term time! So many people on their phones and not looking out!

Football 1:10:00 [3]

The variety of movements, and the flat field, means that my ITB doesn't flare up from soccer... Still took it easy however. (apart from getting a shoulder in the ribs. ouch.)

Note

oh dear ap, you need updating!
A very scratchy 3 weeks of training, went home for a holiday and some nice running...but 2 days in my ITB decided to take a holiday too. So not much running :(
Back in Canbreezy finally and ready to sort out some routine in my life and training.

Orienteering (NOL R1 ) 21:00 [4]

A diabolical race. highly ambiguous map, wrongly placed control, different instructions for different runners on the start...the list goes on. Left feeling that I should have put in a protest as it wasn't a fair race. Very surprised noone put one in.

Having said that, the mistake that may have cost me the race was entirely my doing, not the course/controlling/map.

Orienteering warm up/down 25:00 [3]

ITB was better than yesterday, but tightened in WD. Back to rehab now races are over!

Event: NOL Round 1

8 AM

Orienteering (NOL R1 relay) 28:00 [4]

First NOL race. a 2x2 sprint relay with Mace as my teammate.

Mace had a great first loop and sent me out in the lead alongside Jas. Didn't see her after the triangle though as we had different splits.
Took the whole first map to get back into sprint racing and maps. Cool area around the gardens, with some pretty significant climb, which my ITB did not appreciate much! Did the first course in 13.40ish - turned out to be the shorter course, as my second took 14.50ish! We were leading for the first two loops, but mistakes crept in as we both got tired.
In the end the mistakes were probably academic, as Rachel's 2nd loop was the same as my first, about 1.5mins shorter than my last loop - so I had no hope of catching her up!

Great fun, and very happy with 2nd behind Rachel and Anna.

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

WU, staying warm between, and WD. ITB was sore, sorer, and agony, in that order. Had to walk the WD as it was far too stiff.

Managed to avoid stepping on all the lizards!
2 PM

Orienteering (NOL R1 qual) 17:00 [5]

Really cool campus for the indiv qual race. Some confusing areas where there were multiple levels but only one mapped, and everything else ignored. I managed to avoid these luckily, but others weren't so fortunate.
ITB was very painful warming up, but once map was in hand it went out of my mind. My head's just not in the right place this weekend though. For the first time in years I found myself at a control in a sprint race, without having even glanced at the next leg. So I lost over 30s on 2-3 as I got completely the wrong exit direction in my rush. My race got better as it went on though, which is a positive :)

Orienteering 10:00 [3]

stationary bike 45:00 [3]

Went to the gym with my sister in law. First spin class ever. I thought I was doing alright, until Rachel decided I wasn't pushing hard enough, and leant over to ramp up my gears!
6 PM

Orienteering 21:30 [3]

o-max out at trentham park. Impressed by Bill's course given the limited scope of the map! Good fun, with only a couple of legs that felt like flat bash running. Was the slowest 5km time trial I've done in years though ;)
ITB was alright, a couple of twinges but all around ok.
Got smashed by Tim and Shamus, but solidly beat magnus, so all good :)

Missioning 6:00:00 [2]

Fieldwork on Mt Ruapehu. 11hrs in total, but i'll estimate 6hrs on the move. Stunning day for it - headed off on the round the mtn track, to the far side of the whakapapa valley (where we got stranded 2 yrs ago). Then straight up the ridge. Traversed around the top of the valley taking in 8 different outcrops. Finishing off sidling around the bottom of a massive bluff. Pretty rugged stuff the entire time and very tired by the time we got back to the car, packs full of rock samples, just on dark at 9pm!

Amazing area and so lucky to get the chance to do this sort of field work where next to noone else goes!

walking 40:00 [3]

went for a walk with Penny, Mae and Megan whilst P, Immy and Tessa went running. Knee was sore walking so good choice.

Running 35:00 [3]

Down in Nelson for Sarah's wedding, and unable to really run! torture!

Went for a cruise with P and Tessa to see how the knee was. It behaved for 20mins, then went downhill.

Orienteering 25:00 [3]

O-max at onslow college. standard 3 loops, no twists. A couple of interesting loops, but also a couple of long runs around fields. good fun none the less.

finished off with jamie's training - a map with extra uncrossable fences etc to avoid. really kept you on your toes, although I must admit I did cross one - which I did read, but in the span of about 5-10s and punching a control, subsequently forgot about!

Running 45:00 [3]

Jog up from N Egmont with M+D.

Running 5:55:00 [3]

Did the Pouokai Circuit on Mt Taranaki with Mum. Got a nice view of Mt Ruapehu as we started, but from the the cloud and rain came in, and the rest was done with no view whatsoever!
ITB started tightening after 90mins or so, and by Mt Henry at the end, was absolute agony. Not cool.

Will have to come back and do the circuit another time, in nice weather, with an operable knee, and in about half the time I reckon!

Really good to catch up with Mum for a solid 6hrs though :)

Running 1:35:00 [3] 15.0 km (6:20 / km)

Cockies Run. Good to have a nice group of us this morning! Although I wondered if I was actually awake or dreaming as Shannon happily waited 10mins past 8am for GrantM and Swissmiss to arrive! ;)

Exactly the same route as a couple of weeks ago, at a bit more a social pace (5mins slower all up, which it definitely didn't feel like!).
Was funny to hear that Shannon and I must do about the same loop on Bruce ridge all of the time - each very occasionally running it anticlockwise to shake things up! Shame that she happened to stick to O'connor ridge yesterday and thus missed out on hill reps :)

Thoroughly enjoyed the run, and managed to avoid stepping on the 2 stumpy tailed lizards (i think?) that we encountered on the way down.

Running 1:11:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:55 / km)

Rolled out of bed and into my running shoes. Silly Canberra temperatures!

Drove all the way over to O'connor ridge for a change of scenery from Ainslie. My body really resented being asked to run this morning, and i was checking my watch every 3mins or so to see if I'd gone long enough to turn around! Eventually I found my way to the S end of Bruce ridge, and turned back towards the car with relief. Alas, I took too long shuffling across one of the fire trails, and was collared by Mace and Acejase, who were doing hill reps!

Would have looked soft to pass up the chance, so I agreed to join for one...and ended up finishing the set with them! But really, it was a great place for them and I'll be back :) Actually felt a lot better after running with company for a bit. And the legs were definitely feeling tired on the way back to the car, so the session must have been far more beneficial than my originally planned plod :)
