Day 2, BrownX, 4.0 km.

To get the bad stuff out of the way first, it's really nice when your fuck-ups don't matter.

FU #1, Punched at the start box, hmm, no beep. Punched again, hmmm no beep. And then fortunately I was just wise enough to realized I hadn't cleared and checked (first time ever?). And so instead of just heading off to #1 with no recorded start time, I got directed to the nearby Clear and Check and then back to the start box, a beep this time and off I went. Thank you, start crew, for your patience with idiots.

FU#2. Though I'm not sure it was my fault, my Garmin, which I had started about 8 minutes before my start, still hadn't locked on satellites by the time I started. Before long it must have done something because it started displaying the distance I had gone, but apparently there is no track of where I went. Or maybe it knows but it's just not saying. Whatever. I know where I went so it really doesn't matter.

And that's it. No FUs on the course. No falls. No stumbles. No skipped controls. AP says I lost 5 seconds in the chute, but what does it know. I was rather pleased with my chute time, so what if I made the mistake of punching the Go control box with the correct time. But, really, a rather perfect run.

Perhaps time to retire (again)?

So-called Royal Romp at Quantico, Oak Ridge map, BrownX, 4.3 km, 90 meters. Doing just fine until I wasn't, which happened in small pieces at 7 and 8 and then in a major way at 9. Curious about what was going on around 9, but not so curious (or energetic) as to revisit the spot afterwards. So a disappointing outcome. Physically it was what seems to be the current state -- made it around with what seemed like endless amounts of walking and much smaller bits of running, but at least the running had a little bit of urgecy.

Best move of the day was bringing a nice warm shirt and a nice warm jacket out to the start/finish area. Off with the damp shirts immediately after finishing, on with the dry and warm stuff. Which meant that the time spent appreciating Charlie's endurance while we waited for his arrival was passed in total comfort rather than shivering. That good move clearly offsets the foolishness at #9.

Lots of good company. And only twice did I ask folks (who, in both cases, I had known for a long time) what their name was. Fortunately I'm too old to be embarrassed by such stuff. Which is good, because it is really quite appalling....

First time since Gail got (and got rid of, hopefully) Covid. These are good for me, especially the parts where we're going uphill. Talked some about what orienteering events might (or might not) tempt us in the future, realizing that Portugal has spoiled us -- interesting terrain, manicured forests, no thorns, VIP parking, shuttle service to/from remote starts/finishes for the old folks, not even any rain.

Taylor Hill and Old Sunderland loop.
