Note

Drove to Lake Placid yesterday after the O', visit with Peter and Susan Goodwin. Lots of mountains to climb, but chasing the little white ball took precedence. A round at the Lake Placid Club, links course, cold, windy, fortunately the rain held off, still had on four layers and was just barely warm enough.

But the golf was fun, and of decent quality (84/86), and the walking was good for my leg. And managed to play the whole round with the same ball, thanks to Peter's sharp eyes.

Day 2 in Ottawa (actually, Lac Phillipe in the Gatineau). Had a very sore top of the right Achilles - lower calf, but took a little vitamin I and hobbled around the course. It was a chase start, which are usually fun. I was off first on course 6 (somewhat old guys, somewhat young gals), back first but not by much. Sort of enjoyed it.

Also realized that maybe I should be more diligent about taking my vitamins/minerals, especially magnesium. I have known for a long time that it helps a lot with avoiding muscle pains and spasms, but I guess I need reminding, as I hadn't taken any for the past week or two. After my last trail run, in Wendall, last Tuesday?, no pain at all while running, but a tight/sore mid-calf in the evening. Figured time would heal, but by yesterday it was still there, and yesterday made it a good deal worse.

So this morning I also took a couple of magnesium pills, and other general vitamins. And I think it helped, otherwise pretty sure I would have quit in the first 5 minutes.

And afterwards, even when cooled off, could still manage to jog a little.

Today's course -- my navigating was reasonably OK, but my running was quite pathetic. Walked a whole lot. First in M55, but only because I can find the points.

Ottawa Ofest (or whatever it's called), at Lac Phillipe at the north end of the Gatineau. Rain, so forest was rather slippery.

No disasters, but a couple of minutes wasted and feeling very feeble. Plus right calf/achilles is acting up, so may be a one-day event.

But rest of trip is excellent -- dinner and the night (and a personal tour of 1 or 2% of the 1000 Islands) yesterday chez Rick and Linda on their island getaway, then after the O' today a pleasant stop at a funky cafe in Wakefield, then a couple hours at the Museum of the Civilizations, then some awesome O' finding our hotel with no map and only having a rough idea what part of Ottawa it was in. And now off in search of Thai food.

So what if my O' is feeble. Though I would rather not be having another of a long series of leg issues.

Bike trails, mostly single-track, at Wendell State Forest. Lots of rocks and roots, would have been much more than I could handle on a bike. Running was better, though I still crashed three times.

I haven't been up to Wendell for quite a few years. The trails I was on today have all appeared in the last decade, so were all new to me, so a sense of adventure in exploring something new, but also a feeling that if I crashed bad enough to not be able to keep moving, it might be quite a while on a late Tuesday afternoon before someone came along. I really was trying to be careful.

Continually up and down and always turning, but never steep -- the joy of running on bike trails.

Heading off to Ottawa for some O' in the Gatineau this weekend. Looking forward to it, also glad not to have the Highlander on my schedule, too much for me at this point in life.
