Maps from last weekend in Peekskill --
First, maps without my routes if you wish:
1.
Bushy Ridge.
2.
Blue Mt (no trails or walls).
3.
Blue Mt, just contours, and nothing just before controls.
No controls. In most cases also no streamers. So you were your own judge as to whether you were right or not.
Then, with my routes (click on maps for larger image):
1. Bushy Ridge
Even more trashy then I remember from a long time ago, with laurel, ferns, and the blueberry-type stuff all flourishing. Walking most of the time from 1 to 4. Then went to 10 (also walking), as didn't want to be out too long, even though I knew the forest was better around 5-9. Ran mostly from 10-16.
#2 -- not in touch early on, but OK after big white reentrant with large boulder.
#3 -- miserable thick stuff all the way. Got off at the end but figured it out.
The rest were mostly good, except missed the little trail around the pond right at the end. Pretty sure I was at the right spot at all of them.
2. Blue Mt, no trails or walls.
Easier than I expected. The hills are well-defined, and the cliffs give them character, so no problems. And very good fun. Except for the climb to 9. :-)
3. Blue Mt, just contours.
I was wondering whether to go out or not, but this got me curious as to how I would manage.
Think I managed pretty well, but it was not easy. Most of them I was 99% sure I was at the right place. On #1 I wasn't sure, but I think I was. Also a little doubt at 3 and 6, though probably right. Definitely wrong on 11.
And 12, lost contact before long. Just kept heading NW, hoping things would make sense, but not really. Getting quite distressed, went up one hill thinking it might be the right one, but no rock formations. But it looked like the hill(s) just south of 12, and in fact it was. Lucky.
Tough. Strangest part was halfway from 5 to 6, very weird contours just to the right of the line., turns out (as I was expecting) that on the regular O' map they are hidden by cliffs, and the drafter just never completed them.
Interesting experience, glad I did it.
