Running 5:18 [3] 0.85 km (6:12 / km)

Orienteering 24:19 [3] 3.87 km (6:17 / km) +21m 6:08 / km

Birmingham Uni Sprints. UKUL. Round 1. Men Vet. 1st.

I was careless with my glance at the map in the start lanes, and thought that the canopies through the buildings all had ways through. In fact, many of them were impassable at one or other ends. That caused lots of faffing at the controls that were around those buildings.

Otherwise, not too bad, but not great. Not surprised to be a minute down on Charlotte's time on the same course.

Orienteering 19:02 [3] 3.81 km (5:00 / km) +21m 4:52 / km

Birmingham Uni Sprints. UKUL. Round 2. Men Vet. DSQ.

I was determined to treat this like a Sprint Final and push hard, but I also wanted to be better focused than this morning. Despite a few strange control descriptions (on top of a tunnel?? tower??) I was going really well.

Then at #13 I didn't recognise that I needed to be under all the steps, and instead went to the top of the bridge where there was a control. It was right in the middle of the circle, so I punched, despite my description being "bridge, under". I didn't check the code. At download I was DSQ (and so were 7 others on various course on the same control).

It turns out there was a second control (mine) almost directly beneath the one I'd punched. Apparently the rules say that as long as the distance to run between two adjacent controls is at least 15m, then they can be closer together. These two (56 and 62) were about 6m apart vertically, and 2m apart horizontally, but it was probably 40-50m to get from one to the other. Grrrr. Apparently there was something in the Final Details reminding people of this rule. I hadn't read them.

Note to self:
- read the Final Details
- check codes!!

100 UKUL points binned. At least this wasn't WMOC.

Orienteering race 41:11 [3] 9.25 km (4:27 / km) +3m 4:27 / km

Castle Vale Urban. UKUL (2017 race re-scheduled due to snow). Men Vet. 6.8km. 1st.

Tried to run the race at a constant pace, rather than what I normally do which is start too fast and then get slower. Was hoping to average 4:30/km, given that the area was dead flat. Seemed to work well. One small error where I nearly ran down the wrong alleyway, but apart from that pretty good. And I ended up with 4:27/km.
