Orienteering race 52:23 [0] 11.44 km (4:35 / km) +5m 4:34 / km
London City Race, M40+, 5th.
#1,2,3 easy, and I started quite fast.
#4 obviously difficult to get into, so I paused leaving 3 to make sure I could use the route I spotted using the bridge/steps to the south.
#5 easy.
#6 never spotted the approach over the bridge from the west, so I only looked at how to run the route approaching from the east, which had a dead-end option to avoid. West was quicker by 20-30 secs.
#7 it looked 50:50, but actually west is shorter. I went east, probably losing 10-20 secs.
#8-13 although there are route options, none were significant I think, and it was just a case of being smooth through controls.
#14 interesting leg. I saw the route way west through the car park, but discounted it. Actually, the route east also goes a long way from the straight line. West was shorter, so lost maybe 20-30 secs.
#15 a bit fiddly, but no route choice.
#16 a pure running leg along the Thames embankment. Lost 17 seconds on a 3 minute leg to Dave Rollins, who was clearly running faster than anyone else today.
#17,18 ok
#19 saw the option to approach from the SE rather than the north, but didn't realise I could also have cut straight across the playing field to use it. Went in from the N, and as I approached it Jason was coming out.
#20-23 fiddly but fine
#24 easy, and finally caught Jason.
#25,26 easy.
Happy enough with my run, though it would obviously have been better had I got all the route choice legs right. Even so, there's no way I could have run 49 to beat Dave.
