shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 - 2013

M21E - 6th
Nick and Darren aren't here, so it's a bit of a disappointing result.

Started well enough. Got 1 well.
Made a mistake to 2, lack of a bearing meant I was a bit left and made a parallel error, copped it fast enough to only lose ~20s though.
3 went well enough, 4 was decent too. Running alright and navigation decent enough. At 6 I struggle up the hill, my legs felt weak. 7 I stopped very early, thought it would be about that distance, but when I looked up I could see the spur, again ~30s.
8 was where it all went downhill. Came off the rocky area a bit right, made a parallel error again. hitting stuff that kind of lined up, but not quite, took ages to relocate, and was helped by Conor coming down and nailing it. 4mins lost, and 4mins caught by Conor. Race over, woop!
To 9 though I ran hard because I wanted to, nailed my route and the control, Conor and I worked hard, and were pretty far ahead of the rest on this leg. I felt it on the uphill to 10 again though, just very weak. Conor caught away, and I was hanging on over the next section. He was running well, and I could move fine through the terrain, but he was navigating well too. I had to do hardly any work, and there's no denying that.
Unfortunately I threw Conor a bit on the way down to 16(?), he was just beginning to overshoot when I told him he should be going faster (woops, my b.)
We corrected after a while, but it was 45s lost. I thought I'd just lost him the race...

My pace was good through most of the race, but it was helped a lot by Conor. Most of the others weren't running as fast, but running together definitely helped. Still, it's a positive nonetheless. Shame about 8 as I was slightly ahead of Conor at 7, and it would have been nice to have challenged, or to have run the last bit alone.
Need more training.

(rest day)

Yay! 2 modules done. Lazed around for a good bit of the aftrenoon, and maybe coulda run, but I'm still taking it easyish post-sick, and pre-IOC/exams. So, it's cool. All night finishing my robotics. But it's done. So sweet.

Middle Distance on Magilligan
Gorgeous area. Forgot that it was this nice.
Started well enough, and was almost on cillín pretty quickly but let myself get distracted by him a few time on 7, 8 and 9 and lost valuable seconds on each. Maybe ~30-40 seconds between them.
To number 10 it was reasonably straight forward, and a but long, so mainly running. I went to catch Cillín, which was fine, but then he veered left early, I knew he was wrong, so I continued on my route, but I soon came to a path, which I took to be mine, assuming Cillín had actually been right, and we were further than we were. Hit number 1. Realised quickly, but as I got nearer to 10, I turned in early too, and lost yet more time. Easily 45secs lost on the control. 11, I just wanted to make up for it, but I hardly read my map, and messed up, another 30 seconds. The next section went well. And up to 15 I was clean again, but a bit slow.
16 I wanted to take a nice running route, and went wide left through less hills, and onto a path at the end of the leg. But the flat section turned out to have poorish runnability early on, and I was unwilling to turn off the path at the right spot, because the terrain looked bad again, and had to loop back. This meant that the extra distance just became extra distance for the sake of it, and no speed advantage, so I lost a minute on this route... The final section was okay. Surprised that the big pole wasn't mapped at 19, threw me a bit, probably 20 seconds, and 21 appeared to be on a fence and not a small hill so I was a little thrown again, maybe 10seconds, but not too bad.

Overall the run was pretty poor. A lot of mistakes in hindsight. I was able for the terrain I think, because of early on, but let myself get thrown a bit. Finished 3mins down on conor, in 5th.
Also not fast enough, or strong enough at the moment. The others weren't faster really, but I can tell, I felt a weak.
