Note

Calves are feeling tight this morning but nothing major, bit of stretching needed. Not as tired as yesterday morning either. Hoping the running buggy arrives this week so its arrival has a potential impact on running this week.

Monday - Bike
Tuesday - Run
Wednesday - Rest
Thursday - Bike/Run, bike option could be County Champs, do I want to risk a race.
Friday - Bike/Run
Saturday - Run
Sunday - Bike

Escaped any rain showers that might have been going. Another windy spin, tough headwind out to Beaufort.

Legs on the tired side but might as well get used to training while tired, plenty of that to come. Legs did alright though and the tailwind home was good.

Glenflesk-Barraduff-Rathmore-Gneeveguilla-Killarney

Legs felt tired this morning which wasn't an ideal start to the day. Yesterday's time on feet could be felt. Nothing particular, tiredness. Really had no clue which direction to go this morning or for how long. But what I ended up doing was just about right, that was by luck rather than by actually knowing how long the spin would be.

Gravel now loose chippings over to Glenflesk, ok for the first couple of sections but not easy down the descent to the main road, chippings right until the junction so braking not easy, and my brakes are a bit suspect too, need new pads on the back brakes.

Could see a shower behind me as I approached Glenflesk, stopped to put on my jacket, debated for a moment whether to shelter under the petrol station canopy but decided to be brave. Thankfully I only got drowned for a few minutes and took off the jacket again before Barraduff.

Made good time to Rathmore with a tailwind. Then the real climbing started with a long drag up to Gneeveguilla. From there back to Killarney was tough due to a strong headwind. Difficult with tired legs. At this stage I wasn't sure what the final distance would be, reckoned i'd like to get to 50 and was considering adding in the bypass for some extra length. Thankfully decided I didn't need it as it would have been very hard into the wind.

Nice bit of new tar from Tiernaboul to Spa GAA, lovely descent there now, a change from what was a very rough road. Enjoyed that.

Legs tired when I got home but feeling a bit looser, some stiffness earlier.

Bit of a warm up.
Went over on my left ankle on the grass in a jarvey rut!

1st time on this course but it is only a few weeks old still.
Nice morning for running, only felt the wind on the finishing straight.

Set virtual partner on the watch to 3.50 min/km and stayed ahead of it for the run. Had 7 or 8 seconds early on and then extended that on the 3rd lap.

Slowed a bit on the 2nd km as a result of having seconds in the bank. Didn’t want to go too hard. 2 young lads took off fast with another chap. The young lads stayed away but knew they would. I’d a couple of fellas behind me on the 1st lap but they weren’t that close. So then there was the other fella maybe 10-20m in front of me.

On the 2nd lap I closed a small bit as we ran back towards the house. So felt that would be where to make a move later on. Passed him sooner though, around the house on the last lap. Got a few metres of a gap then on the downhill. Left calf I could feel at this stage though, nothing major though and I didn’t slow.

New course is definitely a fast one but plenty of overtaking to be done on the 2nd and 3rd laps.

Surprised with how I felt today, ran better than I expected so happy.

Road warm up/down 11:23 [2] 2.17 km (5:14 / km) +2m 5:13 / km

Longer warm down along the river and back.
Left calf feeling a small bit tight.

Erik needed to be taken out as was doing a good job wrecking the house. Plan was to go to Torc and then see if it when he fell asleep. Legs were tired when he actually did fall asleep, went through a bad patch then, some aches in the legs, but kept on pushing the buggy.

Got over the 10km. Had to shelter a couple of times from the brief but sometimes heavy showers. Glad to get home and put my feet up watching WOC relays. Afternoon suited me today. But team will probably end up at the banquet still in their o gear!

Headford - Glenflesk - Killarney

Bit of wind about and got some bit of rain around Lissyviggeen on the way back. Not too heavy.

Still feeling a small bit tired but went out with the plan to try and climb the small hills with a bit of effort. Paid off with a KOM, didn't expect that. Especially since I felt like I died a horrible death on the Mill Road hill on the way home.

Happy with the effort back from Glenflesk too. Wind was strong into Glenflesk so was glad to change direction.

Left hand still sore but ok on the smoother bits, issues with bumps. Leg fine on the bike. Will run in the morning I think, might chance parkrun but depends when the alarm goes off.

Had a headwind on the way up but think my main problem at the moment is tiredness. Felt it yesterday and again today. Not sure why as I really have done very little in the last week. Early thoughts in today's spin was to keep training until middle of next week before a rest but later in the spin I was thinking of resting tomorrow. Maybe the weather might decide for me.

Hand a bit awkward at times and not helped by probably needing a new set of pads on the back brakes. Quick 1st part of the descent but then got caught behind a line of cars for the lower section which slowed me until the straight section.

Have decided on preferred Running Buggy, the one that doesn't seem to be available in Ireland!

Grand on the bike with the leg, think i'll stick to the bike for a few days. Hand mostly ok, it is improving.

A bit interrupted, stopped to put on my jacket as it started to rain at the Gleneagle but if i'd kept going it was dry further on. Plenty of wind from the west.

Muckross & Blue Pool

Had hoped to be be running sooner but shopping and talking to my neighbour (mechanic who I need to do a job on my car).

Only did the 30 minutes again. Leg could still be felt but probably a bit less than on Sunday. Hope to get out on the road bike tomorrow but expect that’ll be similar to yesterday.

Did some thinking about goals for next year, but time will tell how the winter goes with the 2nd. Will sort out something for Erik to go running in this week which I think will help motivation in terms of getting out for a run, if I spend money on a buggy then I’ll want to use it. Didn’t need to give the goal much thought. So will start working towards it in September/October.

Note

Will make a plan but will see how much I get done after last week’s one came to an abrupt end. Leg fine walking but hurts if I do decide to touch. Only a small bruise though, was thinking there might have been a bit more colour.

Monday - Bike (maybe, time tight with a CUMH appointment)
Tuesday - Bike
Wednesday - Run
Thursday - Bike
Friday - Run
Saturday - Bike
Sunday - Run

Weekend might change if I’m able, e.g. parkrun.

Muckross (2 laps of Torc)

Plan was keep to tarmac as much as possible to mind the hand. I did have to grip the handlebar tighter on the track section which was actually ok. The bumps weren't ideal though.

Avoided the heavy showers and put a bit of effort in. Leg was fine. Tested it for cycling by lying on my back before I went and pedalled my legs in the air! Felt ok so off I went.
